I won this book from GoodReads, through their book giveaways. Thanks GoodReads!

The book was not quite what I expected. It was very encyclopedic - listing out more than I ever wanted to know about various vitamins, bacteria, etc. It appeared to be researched very meticulously - every assertion was backed up with a footnote, which I assume referred to the appropriate study. There was a good amount of useful information as well - for example, I now know (or could look up) how long I...more

This is a fantastic reference work. I'll be using this for years.

I'm so glad I recieved this book as a Goodreads Giveaway! I learned so much from it and it is a reference book that I will keep handy, and continually refer to, because there is so much good stuff in it. I attempted to read it cover to cover for my review, and I don't think that is quite the way it was intended. It really is a reference book about food and nutrition and can make for some dry bed time reading (and scary mealtime reading). Because I read it from cover to cover though, I learne...more

For me personally this is more like a 2 star book, since it categorizes animals as food, and I do not, and it only briefly goes into the health detriments in consuming animals, and doesn't exclude them as a logical solution to that problem. But the book does prove the point that there are far more cons than pros in consuming animals and animal products; that's just the facts. I was also happy to see organic foods promoted as much as possible, and the dangers of conventional foods and the use of ...more

I won this book in the Goodreads First Reads contest. I found that the information in this book was great. However, it definitely read like a text book. Some people may be able to read text books, but I can't. It was very hard to get through despite the vast amount of great information in this book. I found the information very helpful and very clear. I learned things that I didn't know before and was glad that the author could clear up some of the myths that have been floating around. If ...more

There is a LOT of information in this book. This seems more like a good reference book if I was writing a paper on nutrition and less a guide you’d find on everyone’s practical bookshelf. If your interested in dieting, improving your diet or just finding out more info on the foods you are eating, this the book for you.
