Somebody call NINE-WAH-WAH!

Most likely, I will perpetually be tweaking my star rating on this one. 3? 4? I think I just wasn't really in the mood to listen to so much "woe-is-me-ness." However, it seems like that was kind of the point: if you waste your life away fixated upon passing problems, living with eyes firmly affixed to nothing save the end of your nose, then once the grim reaper starts creeping up and you attempt to take stock of your existence, you tend to find it sadly lacking. It see

Uyuyan Adam

The Sorrows of Young Werther meets Notes from the Underground, unfortunately the mix is not very good.

Although a short book it gets tedious at moments. Maybe it was Turgenev's intention to made the book tedious so that by the end we can feel the superflousness of the main character. Well he succeeded at making me want to throw the book.

It is significant because it is the first book to develop "the superfluous man" in details however Dostoyevsky perfected it in the Notes from the Underground.

Like Turgenev's First Love, this melancholy short story is about unrequited love, with the added depressing setting of a death-bed. However, it has those wonderful elements that the Russians do so well: it describes the bliss and passion of loving with your whole soul, and the torturous despair of a broken heart.
It also has one of the most beautiful descriptions of a sunset I have ever read.

Maybe I just read this book at a good time, but I really liked reading all the introspective thoughts ofChulkaturin as he was dying and had only one chance to spill out his soul to his diary.

I've been a little obsessed with the idea of reflecting lately, and despite most of the plot being about the women he loved never loving him back, there were a fair share of quoteable quotes:

This story finishes much better than it starts. I enjoyed this book but not to the extent that I have enjoyed many of his works. To be fair, this is one of his earlier works. Perhaps the title says it all.

My first Turgenev book. I quite loved it. Honestly, my only disappointment in it was that the narrator is not nearly as superfluous as I expected - in other words, that this tale wasn't quite as bleak as I thought it might be. (Then again, I had just read Pessoa's Book of Disquiet which could truly and absolutely be titled The Diary of a Superfluous Man - not that he was, but because he thought he was.)

Hardly a real gripe, though - it's a great book! I should probably read Fathers and Sons one o

A beautiful novella by Ivan Turgenev that presented to archetype of the “Superfluous man” concept in Russian literature (a kind of Byronic hero), who is a cynical person that does not fit with the social norms. The novella is written as a diary by a dying man, about two weeks before his death, in which he sheds lights on his own life, starting from his early childhood and his relationships with his parents. I particularly appreciated the style of a “life narration”, which emphasizes the every pe ...more

After finishing the book I couldn't help but immediately think of the line from "Hamlet" - "O, woe is me, To have seen what I have seen, see what I see." This self-loathing tale (fit with apt Russian bleakness) features Chulkaturin, a downtrodden character who reflects on his "superfluous" life as he lay on his death bed. A true precursor to fellow Russian novelist Fyodor Dostoyevsky's inner portraits (pre-existential works), Turgenev speaks of Chulkaturin's unsuccessful pursuit of a girl, Liza, ...more

If you must read dreary introspective Russian novels - and sometimes you must - try to pick a short one occasionally. This one fits the bill, the diary of a young but dying man who considers himself superfluous, and it's hard to argue with him. Nothing earth-shattering here but a good place to start if you're not sure you're going to like 19th century Russian literature. I think I do, but I'm not quite sure why.

A very Russian story, the usual unrequited love, duels and despair, beautifully written but not really breaking new ground. I like Turgenev's stylish, emotive writing, which this is a good example of. A pity though, that apart from Fathers and Sons (easily his best work), this seems to be more of the same. Complaints aside, it is a well written, charming piece.

I didn't expect to like this book as much since it's been so many years since I was first knocked out by Dostoevsky's story — "19th Century Gentleman" and Kafka's "The Metamorphosis" and the notion of the alienated man, which became so important to my thinking as a young artist. I thought this would not resonate in the same way for me, some 40 years later. Although written in 1850, set in a different culture, having a somewhat formal lilt, it felt contemporary and insightful in its observation o ...more

A collection of great stories within one of the worst editions I have ever put my hands on.
The superfluous men were those with a lot of insight, a lot of will - and not much to do. Problems, then, had their power multiplied and caused real pain. We would all be superfluous men, had we that much insight and that much will.
