50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food
by
Susan Albers (Goodreads Author)
Food has the power to temporarily alleviate stress and sadness, enhance joy, and bring us comfort when we need it most. It's no wonder experts estimate that 75 percent of overeating is triggered by our emotions, not physical hunger. The good news is you can instead soothe yourself through dozens of mindful activities that are healthy for both body and mind.

Outstanding self help book. Even though it's geared towards emotional eaters, the tips in the book can be applied any time you're feeling stressed/overwhelmed/distracted/unfocused. Albers concentrates on mindfulness (which she defines "as being keenly aware of what you are feeling and thinking in the moment, in an open and accepting way. It is both an experience and an attitude"). You can use the techniques she discusses to embrace a more focused and mindful lifestyle. My struggle with food is a...more
I put this on the hold after reading some review of it, so when it showed up I was surprised at how small it is. So it was a pretty quick read. It's a good scattershot of exactly what it says - it's very something for everyone. Which...there were things in there that I thought would be useful and I took notes on, but there were other self-soothing techniques that made me giggle. And wonder who on *earth* would need them. (I decided a not-quite-elderly lady.) There's also a good bit of self-promo...more
A good self-help book that emphasizes emotional eating and ways to overcome it. One of the best features is that most of the ideas are about mindfulness. Personally, I think adding other band-aids to a situation (like a lot of the distractions the book talks about) don't address the problem of why you look to food for comfort. Most of "50 Ways to Soothe Yourself Without Food" are going directly to the source of the problem and fixing them inside your head. I liked that a lot.

I found many useful techniques throughout this book, not only for my emotional overeating, but also to help me de-stress and focus. I really like the Self-Soothing techniques.

I took a lot of notes from this book. I liked it as a quick read and thought that it was well organized. There are some new techniques I am eager to try, as well as some that I already use regularly. I suppose I will truly know how helpful this book is after I have time to implement the lessons learned. I think this is a good read for someone that needs advice on shutting off life to focus on your healthy eating.
I really enjoyed this book. It has a lot of suggestions for ways to comfort yourself when you get emotional, whether you are an emotional eater or not. I thought these tips would also be good ways to just relax in general. I also liked how the tips were varied enough that everyone should find something that appeals to them ... its not just the typical suggestions of "start a journal" and "meditate."
This is a useful little book containing mindfulness skills and techniques to help deal with overeating. Not all the techniques will work for everyone and you have to consciously work at using the techniques you choose, but there is enough here to ensure that most people will find something to help them.
This book offers some suggestions for curbing emotional eating tendencies - meditation, yoga, exercise, hot baths, mantras. These remedies could be helpful in calming an anxious (or even bored) mind. They definitely offer something else to do - besides eat - in order to find some peace.
Memang bener sih, kalo merajut, jadi gak pingin ngemil lagi;))

I gave this book 5 stars not because it was especially scintillating or fascinating, or because I couldn't put it down, but because I can use all the help I can get. And it was helpful. Lots of different ideas, some of which may appeal to you and some of which won't. I wrote a list of the strategies I would like to try. The one I have found most useful so far is popping bubble wrap!

nothing stands out about the book, except the basic premise- that you can find ways other than food to soothe yourself.
