I don't know if this book just makes me feel lame, or if it makes everyone who reads it feel that way. I'm a third of the way through it, there has been no mention of parachutes (not to mention their potential color), and every time it tries to empower me, I feel myself slipping into apathy. Maybe it is a kind of reverse-psychology effect, i.e. I decide to go out and get a job just to prove this silly book wrong? We shall see.

1) I don't like self-help books. I don't like the idea of self-help books. I'm too proud.
2) This book helped me.
Parachute is great because it gives the reader good, practical advice, and because it encourages you to get out there again and get the job, career, or life you really want.
Now maybe I fell so hard in love because I had a big hole to fill - I've been torturing myself with the job/life/career hunt for about a year now. But it helps. Even if I've done precious little t...more

So, I had to review this one, because I wrote a book that built on it called Forget The Parachute, Let Me Fly the Plane (check it out at www.forgettheparachute.com)
While I'm a huge fan of what Bolles did with this book, I think that this book is more useful as a reference manual than as a "step by step" job-hunting guide. It has some brilliant advice, and I think it should be on everyone's book shelf. But I felt the ...more

The author takes pride in the fact that his book is easy to read, almost boasting about its grammatical shortcomings. For anyone who is quickly perturbed by poor grammar, I guarantee that the text is a bit painful to read.
On the other hand, this book is packed with tips and activities on how to choose, land, and have a successful career. Some activities are exhaustive, but ultimately useful. I found that I did not need to complete every activity and every chapter to come away feeling read...more

I read this book after withdrawing from law school and not knowing where to go next. It didn't help me find my way, but that's because I didn't invest much effort in the process the book lays out. I was looking for a method where I could answer a few questions and, poof! it tells me what I'm meant to do with my life. No book, website, or test can do this for you. I do think this book would be very helpful to someone who is willing to take it seriously and put in the time and effort to really...more

An excellent book to read when job hunting or thinking of changing careers. Even if you know what most of your strong skills and interests are, this book will open your eyes to other interesting facts about yourself that you probably never considered. The word "God" does come up here and there, which is not a problem. However, the last chapter gets heavy on the religion, so you might want to skim it, because the message it tries to convey is an important one.

This is one of the best career books out there and I've read a ton of them! It is full of quizzes so you can figure out what your calling would be. I wish I had read this book while I was in college, before I picked my major. I probably would have picked a totally different career! Anyway, I don't think I can have my ideal job, but I know better what my strengths and weaknesses are so I can hopefully make better career decisions in the future.

Everyone should read this book - it helps make you think holistically about your career and yourself - and probably will open your eyes to choices in your career that you might not have been conscious of before now - if you're not good at understanding yourself and your work choices, this is a goodie.
Why 4/5? It's a little overwhelming - I feel like the material covers the "kitchen sink" and could be compiled and edited more tightly.

Anybody who wants to figure out the perfect career for themselves
I borrowed this book from my local public library and found it to be a helpful book with respect to figuring out what line I work I would like to pursue. It was informative and cleverly written. I think that it is a book that can change a person's life if they are stuck in a rut and are not sure what job/career path to choose. It certainly helped me to solidify and reaffirm that I had indeed chosen the right job/career path.

Essential in helping me get my head straight in terms of my upcoming job hunt back in America. Geared towards those looking to make a career change, this book has exceptional tools to help fine-tune your resume, refocus your goals, land and nail interviews, and a lot more. There are tons of books out there on all of the above-mentioned topics alone, but this is an excellent compilation of what you need to know for all of them.

People who may question which career is best for them.
This book was so key for me when I was in between pursuits a number of years ago. The author updates, revises and re-releases it every year.
My one tip would be to make sure you do the exercises after each chapter. It is tempting to put them off, because you do not want to break your reading pace - but if you do not do the exercises when the chapter is fresh in your mind, you do not really get much out of the book.

This book REALLY helped me think about what I wanted to do after teaching. It has great advice for people at all places in a job search or career change. Still not sure the color of my parachute though . . .

This book is extremely helpful for anyone that needs answers to standard career advancement questions. It provides great suggests for things like networking, resumes, interviewing and establishing life goals. I actually used some of the suggestions listed in the book to help me land a new job.

If I could give this 0 stars, I would.
If one more person tells me this book will help me figure out how to spend my life, I'll scream.
Coloring your parachute does nothing. You'll read this book, do the exercises, and still not know what you want to do with your life.
What a crock.

Someone refered this book to me as a "classic". I have to say that some of the information is good but a lot of it seems rather dated. They try to add new things like how to use the internet to help you in your job search but this book is stuck in 1970 when it's copywrite was issued.

This book has alot of good tips to help you figure out what career paths you should choose and how to change careers. If your one of those people who just doesn't know what they want to do, or thinks they want to do everything, I would definitely recommend this book.

This book is ok. It gets you thinking, which is maybe good if you're in the situation, anything that clarifies what you want. In theory these ideas are real good, but I've always had success in job-hunting without ever applying them, so it's hard for me to say.

good book for helping you figure out if you are in the right job, how to make a change to a job you will love, and other career advice... a good reference book that should be on every graduate/employee's bookshelf.
