After finishing Always to Remember, I was left with a sense of almost sheer perfection. This unique book is far more than a mere romance. It is a morality tale of a man making a stand for what he believes, and facing the scorn of an entire town because of it. This story asks and in my opinion, answers quite well the difficult question, “What truly constitutes courage?” It is about love and hate. It is about true friendship. It is about loyalty to one's convictions. More...

"I will not take up arms against my fellow man."

"I didn’t believe we should fight the Northern states, and yet, I could not in all good conscience take up arms against the South, my home, and my friends. But more than that, I would not fight because I believe it’s a sin against God to kill another man."

When Texas joined with the rest of the Confederate states, all the young men of Cedar Grove were ready and willing to join the glorious cause. All that is, except for Clayton Holland, who refused More...

I wish I could give justice to how perfect this story is. I cried and I laughed and when the story came to an end, I refused to let go of the characters who became so real to me.
Clayton suffers from the town's scorn; he's labeled as a deserter because he refused to fight when all the able men left for war. It is awesome to see how strong he is in braving every insult and how courageous of him to maintain his eloquent silence. He is one of the most memorable and strongest heroes I have ever read. This was the last of my Lorraine Heath Texas story backlist and it was a very good read. A strong 4.5, I'd say.

For a romance novel it's very thought provoking. I might have been bothered by the heroine, but Heath humanized her and invited empathy. I had to wonder how I would feel in the same circumstances, knowing only the little she could know. The story touches heavily on the irrationality of grief and the variety of ways that people can show courage. I thought about it long after I turned the More...

This was the second novel I've read by Lorraine Heath, and so far she's 2-0 in my playbook. It's irritating reading romances by the same author in quick succession because the similarities between books detract from the story. All you see is the repetition of the same characters and plot-lines. In these there were similarities, but Always to Remember was every bit as unique and refreshing as Sweet Lullaby. Jake and Clayton are both beta-heroes, but each with his own fully developed personality a More...

Clay Holland is a passivist. Refusing to fight in the Civil War, he was branded a deserter, literally, and was beaten, starved, and imprisoned. He's now returned home to his 3 brothers and a town which dispises him. Meg Warner, his friend's widow, is one of the people who despises him most. She hates the fact that her husband was killed in the same war that Clay refused to fight in and enlists his help to carve a memorial for the fallen soldiers. She hopes to elicit guilt, remorse, and feelings More...

This romance is really sweet and beautiful.

Clay is a different type of romantic hero, and you just fall in love with him. He's shy, quiet, thoughtful, and intense.

Clay wouldn't go off to fight in the Civil War because he was against slavery and he wouldn't kill anybody else. He was imprisoned and tortured but wouldn't give in to what he believed in.

When he gets back to his small Texas town he is shunned by everyone in the town save his little brothers. Everybody hates him and brands him a cowar More...

one of the best romance novels i've ever read!

i just don't have any idea how this author managed to create such wonderful characters, especially Clayton, and made us feel like we were there, seeing how much he struggled because of what he believed in. I started this novel during my study break around 11 pm, almost midnight, and finish it at 6 am. and i don't regret every single minute i spent for reading this book instead of sleeping. it worths the time.

Not to mention i was crying half the tim More...

"Within the shadows of honor, courage often walks in silence."

This was so much more than just a fluffy romance novel....it was a story of one man who withstood hate, despair, loneliness and much more to stand up for what he believed in. Clayton never gave in and he never gave up. He stood by his beliefs even when it cost him the love of his family and friends. His scars run much deeper than what we see on the surface and his courage made him a hero even when no one else could see past their hatr More...

I could say that this is the book everyone would love to like. It has family and romance engraved in its depths. Wonderfully written and the characters are amusing...especially the unlikely hero. Who would've thought that an untried man could be a hero? But the main characters both balance each other well it's so lovely!

Not your normal hero. A very touching and heart wrenching story about a man who is hated by his community for refusing to fight in a war that took so many of their loved ones.

"Dentro das sombras da honra, a coragem muitas vezes caminha em silêncio"

Que livro lindo, inspirador, reflexivo. A capa simplória em nada representa a grandeza desse conto de amor, que fala sobre o verdadeiro significado da honra e da coragem. Não é um livro água com açúcar, não é um melodrama qualquer, é uma história profundamente humana, sobre as escolhas que fazemos na vida, as suas consequências, e a força necessária para suportar o peso de lutar pelo que acreditamos. Clayton Hallond, é o he More...

I just finished this book this morning after the course of about three days. This was an enjoyable book and i highly recommend it for just a quick, heart lifting read... Heath really touches upon important topics that make you fall in love with the main character (in my opinion)... What i loved most was the fact that the book jumped right into plot, it didnt give an annoying 30 page background where nothing really happens... It got right into things and made you want to turn the page right from More...

I love Ms. Heath's earlier westerns and I've wanted to read this book for years, but I just could not justify buying an out of print copy for $20+. Thanks to my wonderful Kindle, I was able to score an ebook copy for only $3.99!

The beginning was very hard to get through. Meg acted very bratty by reminding us how much she hated Clay on every other page. That went on a bit too long, but she eventually mellowed out. By far, the best part of the book was Clay and his tortured soul. He saved the boo More...

Kindle book. A sculptor who's a consciencious objector during the Civil War is the pivotal character in this romance. This is one of the few books I've read where the heroine's first husband, who died in the war, and the hero are not only best friends but also has no awful hidden secret that will make either the hero or heroine hate him after his death. Other than a little too much bathos in some parts of the story, this is an excellent book and one I will read again and again.

Set in the post-Civil War Texas, this story follows a conscientious objector and a widow of a Confederate officer as they navigate their feelings.

This is an excellently-written book but it's horribly depressing and I hated everyone except the main character. Imagine, he didn't want to fight for slavery. How horrible! Seriously. Die, die, everyone except for the hero, and the heroine (by association).

Ms. Heath's historical romances are a far removed from your typical romance novel. She creates characters you immediately care about and root for. The romance is sweet but not cloyingly so. There's enough grit and backbone of a story to make her book hard to put down. It's been years since I've read them, but might have to dig them out of the attic and revist.

This book was powerful and beautiful. You can't help but be impressed by the wronged hero and the way he copes with the other villagers. The heroine was less impressive but still understandable in her reactions. And the end is worth putting up with the heroine and her stubbornness in refusing to think logically about what happened.

I should probably give this book 5 stars but it exhausted me too much. I have never seen a female lead that i've hated more than Meg. Her hatred and want for revenge against Clay was almost too much to read at times. Always to Remember is painful, beautiful and heartbreaking. Heath has a way with words.

Oh my god. That book was awesome. I was not sure if I really want to read this story before. But someone recommended it to me and I decided to try. To me, this novel is wonderful. Full of emotion and clever. I am very glad that I had the opportunity to read this title.
Highly recommend it.

I liked it but I didn't think it was quite as spectacular as some others did. The heroine annoyed me immensely early on, and some parts of the plot seemed pretty thin. Then it all just wraps up ever so neatly:P Nice premise, but I think it lacked something in execution.

I really like how the author allowed the romance to develop and how 3D Clay was, and the twins! However I didn't think it was believable at all how suddenly the town changed it's tune-so four stars for the kinda rushed ending.

This was to be a victim of my cleaning shelves. What a surprise! This was a Kleenex book.
Heath was able to make characters that came alive and set emotions reeling.
