Extreme Vinyl Cafe
If you ask them, Dave and Morley's friends will tell you that no matter how long you've known people, they can still surprise you.
After all, no one expects to see a grown man dive into the trunk of his car to chase a rat. And despite what they may claim, few people are actually prepared to have their backyard, never mind their twelve-year-old son, shoot to stardom on YouTu...more

I've just purchased and finished this book before I joined goodreads.
The Vinyl Cafe podcasts have certainly kept me entertained at work, but it's definitely a different experience when I had the pages in front of me. Some stories made me laugh till my sides hurt, and other stories made me reflect upon Canadian history and its identity. Sam's trip to Quebec has reminded me of the summer when I had traveled from West Coast Canada all the way to PEI--especially the language barrier I had in Quebec...more

Delightful. Absolutely delightful.
I am a big fan of Stuart McLean and the Vinyl Cafe. I have been to two of his concerts and listen to his weekly podcast. I have only managed to read a couple of his books however, because I much prefer listening to his stories via radio. Needing something to read one night--and wanting something lighthearted--I picked this book up off my husband's shelf. I thoroughly enjoyed it from cover to cover! Many of the stories were new to me and the familiar ones seemed...more

My parents are fans of The Vinyl Cafe radio show and suggested I read this book. Well, it wasn't so much a suggestion as a guilt trip, but I'm really glad I gave in to the guilt and read this book. Each chapter is a short story about a fictional family: Dave who works at the Vinyl Cafe, a vintage record store, and his Wife, Morley, and their kids Sam and Stephanie. The stories are charming and touching and hilarious. I read "The Waterslide" to my kids one night and they were mesmerized during th...more
It's kind of difficult for me to review this book, because:
1) It's a short story collection, so it's possible someone would feel differently about each story. However, I fully enjoyed each one.
and
2) If you've never listened to a Vinyl Cafe reading*, you will be confused upon starting this book. The characters, settings, etc. will all be unfamiliar. However, the general backstory isn't incredibly complicated, so you should catch up soon.
My favourites were probably "London", the last story about t...more

My husband introduced me to Stuart McLean on CBC a few years ago. I've always been a little worried about buying the books because I thought that his stories would lose something without him telling them. They don't.
He tells stories of an ordinary family doing mostly ordinary things. He writes like he talks and too often those wry punchlines make me laugh out loud.
I look forward to reading more of his books, and I'm kind of sad I wandered into them so late in the series.

A wonderful collection of some of McLean's finest Dave and Morley stories. Although I've heard all of them - most more than once - I was still chuckling out loud as I read. Definitely worth the read. (And if you've never had the pleasure of listening to McLean's "Vinyl Cafe" radio show, be sure to download one of his podcasts at cbc.ca/vinylcafe. You don't know what you've been missing; McLean is a masterful storyteller and a true Canadian treasure!)
This book was a bunch of short stories. I have never heard or seen any of the Vinyl Cafe series so I'm not familiar with the storyline at all, however I did enjoy the gist of the stories. I didn't read all of the stories completely (yes, I admit, I skimmed the book), however I did enjoy what I did read. I am not a huge fan of short stories and these are the type that I feel are better told with a group of friends and not read by yourself, hence the low rating and the fact that I skimmed the stor...more
I've been a fan of Stuart McLean's Vinyl Cafe books since I was a kid.
I've just finished reading the book, Extreme Vinyl Cafe, and while it's classic Dave and Morley, I have to say I'm a bit disappointed. I think it's the fact that I'm over-saturated by the podcast and reading so many of the books, but I'd already heard all the stories in Extreme Vinyl Cafe. I know two of them we heard at the concert, and I know at least another two (for certain) I heard on the podcast. They were great stories,...more

The strange antics that happen to Dave and his family make the odd events that happen to me seem so hum-drum. If you would love to laugh or are attracted to 90-year old italian men in speedos with no fear of heights who possesses a large quantity of dish soap, then this is a book for you.
Ps. I will go on that cruise with you Mr. McLean.

You know a book is good when it only takes you three days to read. I've heard a few of these stories on the podcasts but still enjoyed them in the book. We listen to the podcasts every week the vinyl cafe has become a tradition in our house and why not the stories are so well written. Really enjoyed this book and already looking forward to the next.
Stuart McLean tells amazing stories and the written versions are just as good. The adventures are hilarious and each tale show the wonderful "childish" things we never grow out of, or at least some of us don't, and how important those things are. I very highly recommend this book to anyone with a sense of humor or a trace of childhood left in them.

Anyone who has ever listened to Vinyl Cafe on CBC will wallow in the joy of this good read because you'll hear Stuart's voice in your head as you read along familiar paths.
If you've ever turned your radio dial away from CBC, seeking something more entertaining, don't buy this book. You just won't get it ! ! !
