These books are fine and all but has anyone else realized that there are going to be TWELVE of them in total?! After Burned you have Stolen, Burdened, Touched, Cloaked and Wanted. No wonder they are starting to tell the story from multiple perspectives. (Speculation is now at fifteen books).

Loving the U.K. cover by the way, disappointed its not Stevie Rae like the U.S. but it will look good on my shelf anyway.

I really don't know why I keep reading these books. Maybe I'm hoping they'll get back to being as good as the first five books in the series. They were, I don't know, cozy. But not anymore.

The whole point of this book is to deal with the events that happened at the end of Tempted. And really, that's it. It is painfully obvious that P.C. and Kristin Cast threw in that ending so they could cash in on another book resolving that ending. A little background info before I begin: I loved the first four House of Night books, though I still had my issues with them. When the fifth book came out, I wasn't fond of it, but it was decent. Tempted, the sixth book, was just awful. In accordance with my two book rule (in which one bad book in a series is a fluke, but two means that I will stop reading the series), Burned was going to be the big decision-making book. After reading this awful novel, I can safely say I am done with the House of Night series for good. The Casts will not make another cent off me.

After Tempted's cliffhanger ending, Zoey's soul has shattered and she's trapped in the Otherworld with Heath. As her friends scramble to being her back before her body dies, Neferet sees a chance to permanently eliminate the threat Zoey poses. Back in Tulsa, Stevie Rae is dealing with her Imprint on Rephaim and her fledglings, both good and evil.

The only positive aspect of this book was the mythology. The one thing that made the House of Night series stand out to me in the beginning was the unique mythology unlike anything else that was being written at the time. I thought the Scottish elements and the thing with the black and white bulls were blended in well with the Wiccan and Native American mythology already present. If it weren't for that, I would have dropped this series at the first book, so at some point, the books were bound to get so bad that the mythos couldn't keep me reading. This happened during Burned.

What bothers me the worst about this series? The language. Good God, the language. This novel is categorized as young adult (with an ages 12-18 target audience). Zoey's "voice" as the narrator and the writing style that accompanies it has the maturity level of a thirteen-year-old. Meanwhile, the subject matter that has come up over the entire series is for about fifteen and up, if not sixteen. I find this gap a little puzzling.

I don't know who the Casts are copying this language from because teens that are the same age as these characters? They don't speak like that. The Cast women's attempts at writing authentic teen language are so off-the-mark that it's almost insulting. Of course, what would I know about how teens talk? I'm just a sixteen-year-old girl enrolled in a public high school! Don't get me started on Kramisha or I won't shut up.

I don't like it much when the point-of-view in a novel jumps around like a kangaroo on speed, but that's what happens here. I didn't like it in Tempted when they started changing points-of-view, but it gets so much worse here. Just as something began to happen with one group, it would switch to the other and follow them for a while. I know that they changed from Zoey's point-of-view (which I was thankful to see less of in this book) in order to cover Stevie Rae's plot lines and such, but I wish they hadn't done that in the middle of the series. The constant bouncing between groups with rare input from Zoey was not too fun for me.

I hated Zoey from the start, but I didn't let my hatred of her stop me from enjoying the world-building and great supporting characters. What I liked least was how she strung along three guys at once for most of the series, which was fixed with some character rape (excuse my vulgar phrasing) and death. I was happy about that. Then Zoey told Heath that she couldn't live without him and wanted to stay with him forever in this book. So her loved ones back in the living world were collectively worth less than this one boy? Ugh! I hate to see girls in books saying that they can't live without this guy or would die without him. Yes, you will live without him and no, you will not die without him. When will they get it? Men are not like food! They are not required for living! It almost seems like fictional girls can't survive on their own anymore.

In addition, the villains were hardly frightening to me because they were hardly there. I'm quite surprised the all-powerful Neferet hasn't found a way to kill Zoey yet without implicating herself and once the Casts decide whether Kalona is good or evil, shout it from the rooftops and write it on the skyline for me. He flips back and forth more than the points-of-view. I used to take issue with how convenient it was for Stark to be the one person in the entire world who could save Zoey due to his lineage, but I'm a little more okay with that now. That's still a huge case of extreme coincidence...

There are also time continuity errors I didn't pick up until much later. According to my research, Marked was published in May 2007, so let's assume that the book began in fall of that year. (It's only logical, right?) In Betrayed, Zoey has been at the House of Night for a month and Christmas happens in Chosen. At best, a month or two has passed during the last four books alone (Untamed likely took place over a few weeks, Hunted happened over an estimated three days, Tempted and Burned probably covered about a week each). No matter what, it is impossible for more than a year to have passed within the House of Night series, though three years have passed out here. But what's this? In Burned, they make references to Glee, which didn't start airing until May 2009! And inside the books, it's still 2008! I call plot hole! If I made a mistake in that math or if more time has passed than I'm aware of, but I'm absolutely sure it's impossible for enough time to have elapsed inside the books to be able to make Glee references and have them be timely pop culture. This is why authors should be cautious and careful when using pop culture in their novels.

I wanted to like this book. I really did. Maybe I could have passed off Tempted as a fluke, but it's obvious now that the authors have lost what got me interested in the first place. The Casts have lost me and countless others who can't take it anymore as fans. There are more fans every day to replace us, so it's not like they're truly suffering any losses.(less)

The House of Night Series is filled with drama. At times I feel im reading a teenage soap-opera. But It is highly addicting. And as the series continue I feel that each books gets darker and each of the characters get more entangled in conflicts but they mature.

I specially started to enjoy the series more when the different point of views of the characters started to appear. I found that Aphrodite, Stevie Rae and Stark are complex and interesting characters.

I absolutly loved the book before this book. The only problems I had with it were that.................. 1.) Zoey and Stark didn't seem like they got enough time together which made it seem like they were growing apart. 2.) Stark and Zoey need to be together. Period. 3.) I am zo glad Heath died. I love this series. I have never felt so connected to a set of characters. Whenever I'm reading one of these books I always feel like I'm right there and that zoey and her gang are my friends. These books bring me happiness, sadness, anger, serenity, & laughter. I always regret finishing one and always enjoy picking up another. I am ecstatic to hear that there are more books to come and even more ecstatic to hear that they are working on making them into films. I say keep up the good work P....more

It did have its moments like Stevie Rae and Rephaim romance and the mythology but nothing really...happened. Zoey was restored, that's about the only thing I could get from this book. By the end of it I just felt cheated almost. The last fifty pages was the only redeeming thing that reminded why I bothered to read the series in the first place. I have never been a big fan of HoN to begin with, but I did find them to be short, exciting reads for a rainy day.

It took me a while to figure out what was bothering me so much about this book and why it took me so long to finish it. The others I whipped through in two days time, but this one seemed to drag on. I finally realized what was wrong after really thinking about the book as a whole and I narrowed my problems with it down to three major things.

1. The switching of point-of-views.
This series started out with a very distinct first-person point-of-view with Zoey. Now while Zoey was by no means a ground-breaking character, I have to admit she kept things interesting and having one main focus provided the earlier books with a smooth chapter-by-chapter flow. With multiple point-of-views you can't have that smooth flow. I get why they did it, but I think that if they knew they were going to start this, use it for all of the books, not just the later ones. And narrow the narrators down to three or two, because with every character getting a turn, it's too sporadic. As soon as you get to something good with one character, you're forced to go see what another is doing only to spend the first few pages playing catch-up. Then, once things get interesting with that character, it's back we go to another and more catch-up. While Zoey was annoying and groan-worthy sometimes, you never had to play catch-up when it was just about her. Another thing is, some of the character simply to have the chops to be center stage. They're at their best as secondary characters. Stark in particular got underneath my skin. I loved him the first books and then began to wonder why I did in this book. It wasn't until the very end did I start to like him again as he gained the cockiness and loyalty he has through Zoey's eyes. He losses a bit of edge when we have him as the narrator.

2. The "Bad" Guys
I'm confused; is Kalona good or evil? I thought by the end of Tempted that we had established he was evil, but that seems to be contradicted in this book. He hypes about feeling something like guilt and regret while in the Otherworld chasing after Zoey, yet the next thing we know, he's beating Stark to a pulp. I have a feeling he's going to be redeemed somehow and yet I just kind of want him to move on and do it already. Choose Light or Darkness; quit swaying in the middle for who knows how long. Again, I think he's one of thos characters that's better as a secondary. When we're in his head, we're as confused as he is. Neferet also bothered me. I don't get how she could stand before the Vampyre High Council and not have one of them sense the Darkness that she seems to have immersed herself in. Also, I'm a little lost as to why she turned to Darkness. I get that she wants power, but I've forgotten why she wants power so bad. Her motivations seem cloudly and kind of cliched to me (when going with the whole ruling the world thing). Does she want power simply to have power? I would've liked to be in her head rather than Kalona's because she's the true evil here. Or at least, that's what I was lead to believe by the end of this back. Still wondering about Kalona...

3. The Romance--or Lack Thereof
Yes, we had Stevie Rae and Rephaim as our main couple focus this time around and, yes, I thought their story was the best thing about this book, but, in the end, nothing really changed between them. Rephaim is still denying his love for her and while Stevie Rae seems to have accepted him, it feels almost forced. Plus, with Rephaim having a beak and being birdman, I don't see how their relationship could progress past the Beauty and the Beast stage. I have a feeling he's going to turn human or something in the future books, but I would've liked him to make his choice already seeing as the whole book was leading up to that: him choosing Stevie Rae over Darkness. I felt Dallas's whole flip-flop to the evil side seemed out of character for him, though I can understand where he's coming what with Stevie Rae continuing to lie to him and all. Aphrodite and Darius were barely in the book and we only caught snipets of their relationship. And finally that brings me to Zoey and Stark. I've always liked Stark. He seemed like a good match for Zoey, not too posessive like Erik and not too (how do I put this nicely?) ignorant like Heath. And while Stark went to the ends of the Earth to bring Zoey back, we weren't rewarded with any real connection between the two of them until the very end. While I was beating my head against a wall along with the rest of the folks that were eye-rolling at Zoey's three guys issue, I did find it interesting how each of her relationships were protrayed in a different light. I'm not saying I liked it, but it was interesting to read. What I'm trying to say here, is that all of the relationships never really progressed to the next stage. (I don't mean like third or second base.) I mean I want a relationship in the book to actually grow and remain stable. With all the flip-flopping of guys in the book, we never really got that. It's the same relationship with different people dragged through the same steps. I want to see characters develop through these relationships and actually learn from one another, get to a new level of trusting each other. Not just remain in the same "I love you and you love me, let's kiss." With Heath and Erik out of the way, I'm hoping to get that in the next book with Zoey and Stark. Basically what I want is some memorable, romantic scenes that make me think, "They belong together." and would make me start rooting for them to stay together. I'm not getting that feeling from any of the couples so far.

So, in summary, the book is readable and is alright for hard-core fans, but won't do much to sway the "meh" and "OMG I hate this series!" people. Will I be reading the next book? Absolutely, just to see where this goes. (less)

The first few books in this series were good. They were fun, easy reads and guilty-pleasure material. The last few books have been a chore to read, though. While the characters were not as annoying in this book (due to Zoey not really being present) the writing was irritating. I did not understand the reason for switching narrators every few pages. P.C. Cast has gone way beyond the talent she has shown in previous books in her writing of the most recent installment of the House of Night series. The multiple perspectives, introduced in the 6th book worked masterfully in telling this book's unique story. The way that the storyline is told is both surprising as it is breathtaking. There was a point in this book where P.C. Cast tricked me and I absolutely loved it! When the realization hit, I was in awe of how well written the revelation was....more P.C. Cast has gone way beyond the talent she has shown in previous books in her writing of the most recent installment of the House of Night series. The multiple perspectives, introduced in the 6th book worked masterfully in telling this book's unique story. The way that the storyline is told is both surprising as it is breathtaking. There was a point in this book where P.C. Cast tricked me and I absolutely loved it! When the realization hit, I was in awe of how well written the revelation was. And satisfyingly enough the reader will be just as challenged as the characters are while reading this book. As a friend once put it, "these books are like snacks." With that comparison, this book is not a snack the way the others are, and it isn't a full course meal either. Instead, it sits the reader down and shows them how to cook.

But lets go back to the first 6 books. Because without them, this book wouldn't be nearly as pointed. During the House of Night series, the reader feels a need and demand that the characters learn, make decisions, and grow. Books 1 through 6 hasn't really shown us the volume to which these characters can change. While we know that they have, we haven't ever been as intimate with the characters until this 7th book, where we are forced to look at these multi-dimensional characters and acknowledge the depth of them. Heath, Zoey, Aphrodite, Darius, Stevie-Rae, Rephaim, Stark and the big baddies (Neferet and Kalona) are the main focus and while fans of the Twins and Damien and Jack might be disappointed, the focus on the characters listed is key to this book. What's marvelous about that, though is not all characters are developed in the present, not all are even truly in the book, but each and every character mentioned takes on more meaning and becomes so much more clear than in previous books.

Now I'm a huge Stark fan and by the end of this book I don't see how anyone couldn't be, but that's not where I think this review should focus. What's more important is that I'm not a huge Zoey fan. I'm not a huge Heath fan. But by the end of this book I was. Zoey's character changes so much that the reader may expect whiplash yet the story is crafted so that her extraordinary progresses reads naturally. Heath's character is developed simply by reviewing the constants in his relations with everyone in the book. It does not serve to make any reader feel stupid, but rather does cause a reader to stop and think about how Heath really doesn't change so much as our understanding of him did.

Stark. Where to even begin. We learn his history, his future and glimpse into his mind in the present all at once while somehow carrying his load for him. His role in this book is so well written and so well played that this character really shines.

Those of you interested in Stevie-Rae and the inevitable dilemma of Rephaim will not be disappointed by how this story-line, so loosely and tightly mingled with Zoey's is developed and expressed.

And that firecracker Aphrodite? If you think she had a strong voice in all of the rest of the books, her voice is even stronger, if that can even be conceived, in this one. Another spin in the story line helps develop her character in remarkable ways as well.

Here are the most important themes of the book: The act of wishing vs. doing, disguise, the power of mistakes, the power that everyone has inside of us born out of the path we choose, and ultimately, the power not so much of free will but more of choice. Every choice in this book counts.(less)

i think the reason i literally hated this book was because right before it came out, i was reading her divine series, and just finished Brighid's Quest. Now, for any of you haven't read this book, it's the same book as Burned, with just the character name's different. I think Cast even threw in Cuchulain's(sp?) patented "Harrumph" in the HON novel. I don't like to stop reading a series, if i've read more than three books. But it may be time to swallow my own words again, because this series is just not for me. It has turned from something amount 3 stars, to something amount none.

I had actually looked forward to this book. I thought, that maybe it would get more interesting, because there would be less boyissues, now that this stupid ~~jerk caveman~~ boy Heath is gone.

However, it started to drag after a while. I thought Stevie Rae's story-line was repetitive, almost like they were trying to find things to write about. I was interested in the parts about birdman, but other than their interactions, I didn't care.

I enjoyed Stark's parts, but I felt they were few and far between. More of his journey would have been appreciated.

Though you can detect the writing styles of P.C. Cast and the differing, more juvenile writing style of Kristin Cast, the parallel is important to the integrity of the books. The reliability to young readers portrayed in Kristin’s writing and the maturity in P.C.’s writing making for a well-rounded read.

The story starts off on the edge of disaster. Zoey is broken and absent from the physical world, her tattoos gone apart from her fledgling crescent. All seems lost…hope gone and sorrow an overwhelming cloud overhead. But as the friends work together, and at times in secret they discover how to mend Zoey’s soul. Will they help her in time? Will Stevie Ray’s secrets unravel and ruin even more than just Zoey’s chance of coming back? Does stark have what it takes to protect his priestess? And where does that leave Nefret and Kalono, and the burning future that Aphrodite had seen in her vision what seemed like a lifetime ago?

Stevie Ray and Raphiem are my FAVORITE…something about how they connect and the hope of good that hangs in the balance between them excites me. The way that The Casts were able to breathe humanity into a creature I once saw as purely monster in inspiring, proving to be my favorite part of the book. And the glimpse of a different future…one that will surely excite you as much as it did me, leaves me wanting more! And Stark, cocky, selfish, arrogant, Stark is faced with a choice…a quest that will forever change your view of him as it has for me.

I HIGHLY recommend this book and I was blown away with everything that went on within its pages.

OK, I liked this book a lot, but I felt like it was a step down from all the others when it should have been a step up. I cried my eyes for Heath again (but luckily big bro wasn't home). I have to admit it: As much as I love this series, it’s really starting to bug me.

First off, the reference to the TV show True Blood on the FIRST PAGE irked me. If you want your work to be timeless, don’t insert current pop culture into it. There were also references to Paris Hilton and Barbie dolls, which was just a filler conversation in the novel, if you ask me. It’s just not necessary – the book should be able to stand on its own.

Second, I don’t understand why the Casts’ have to make Damien, Jack, and Zoey seem like such babies when throughout the novel there are people who act like adults – outright swearing and not just being a baby about everything. The weepiness and the lovey-doviness between Jack and Damien is really starting to get to me. And no, it’s not a gay thing, it’s just annoying. Yes, we all know that Jack is shy, but after he speaks out, it’s not necessary to point out how much his day is brightened when he’s encouraged by Damien. Once is fine, but after each time is just a little much. I also don’t get why some characters swear and act like adults and then we see Heath and Zoey saying things like “bullpoopie” to one another. It’s just wrong.

I honestly expected more from Zoey in this book – like more “screen time,” so to speak. But after seeing the interaction between her and Heath (who I couldn’t stand since day one, by the way) I was happy that the book focused more on other things.

Now that I’ve gotten those things off my chest, I’ll talk about the thing I loved.

Rephaim. Oh dear, dear Rephaim. Am I the only girl who has totally fallen in love with this half-bird/half-man? The whole story arc between him and Stevie Rae was great, and that’s not just me being a romantic. I love that they save each other and openly claimed to their elements that the other belongs to them. The part that really had me was when Stevie Rae couldn’t get back to the House of Night, so she stayed at the mansion with Rephaim. However, for Rephaim, the sky is where he feels comfortable, and for Stevie Rae, the underground is where she feels most comfortable. If Stevie Rae isn’t underground, she could die in the daytime. When Rephaim gathered up his nest on the top floor of the mansion to move underground where Stevie Rae was, I was so ready to fall apart. I just love him so much. It’s such a great message to show that you can go against what you’ve been nurtured to be in order to do right – Rephaim went against the Darkness just to be with Stevie Rae. I really hope that Rephaim can find himself worthy of love and come back to Stevie Rae – and that her friends can accept him.

And in the end there was one man: Stark.

Can I just say how much I’ve loved Stark since he first came into the series? I know that for some crazy reason, the Casts’ will find a way to bring Heath back, but it was like Zoey changed when she healed Stark in the grove – she grew up and took her place as a queen and it was all just so beautiful. Yes, it might have been a very quick 360-degree spin, but to see her grow up in an instant was worth it.

And Aphrodite! I couldn’t believe how much her character had grown since meeting her in the first book. She truly is fitting into her roll as Prophetess and I’m happy that she still has a snarky attitude, but only when necessary. She has the makings of a leader and that’s definitely a good thing.

Oh, and just a writing thing that’s been bothering me – why is it that when it’s Zoey’s time to speak in the novel, she’s the narrator, but then whenever anyone else is speaking (which bugged me – if the point of view is Stark for one chapter, why have more than one header reading ‘Stark’?), they’re never the narrator? It was a little off-putting, especially considering Zoey wasn’t that prominent a speaker in the novel.

Anyway, as ticked off as I was when I finished reading Tempted, the last novel in this series, I was very happy when I finished reading Burned. Even though I know something is bound to happen with Kalona, Rephaim, and Neferet in the future books, it’s nice to have some finality to this book.

Burned is the seventh installment to the House of Night series and the last one in the series for a while. It is in the same format as Tempted in that the point of view changes with each chapter, which I really like. This time we hear mostly from Stevie Rae and Stark, but Aphrodite, Rephaim and even Kalona are present too, as well as Zoey, but she doesn't play as much of a role as in the previous books, although she is still the main focus.

After the sad events that happened at the end of Tempted, which I won't go into as it will be a big spoiler to those of you who haven't read this series yet, Zoey is in the Otherworld, and Stark, as well as all her friends, are trying to find a way to reach her and bring her home.

The most interesting, and my most favourite aspect of Burned, is Stevie Rae and her connection with Rephaim, the bird-man, son of Kalona. This connection intensifies through out the book and both are confused by it and what it means. I really enjoyed this relationship and every time the story moved away from Stevie Rae, I found that I missed it and couldn't wait to get back to it. Stevie Rae also has to deal with the Red Fledglings who haven't decided between good or bad and also comes face to face with Darkness itself, with unforeseen consequences.

Aphrodite is still having her visions and although we only get to see the world from her point of view in three chapters, we do see the Aphrodite we know and love, but who is now fully integrated into Zoey's circle, and she's liking it too. Burned is also much more about the boys and we get to learn more about Stark and Rephaim. There are quite a few passages about warriors and guardians, which seemed to go on a touch too long for me, but it was nice to get the view from a guys perspective.

Verdict:

Burned feels more mature than the other books - each character has grown quite a lot, especially Stark and Stevie Rae. The story is exciting and continues to be completely addictive but Burned definitely has a different feel to it than the previous books in the series. Another really good edition to the House of Night series and I am SO looking forward to Awakened... I just wish I didn't have so long to wait!

I gave this book 7/10 on my Blog but Goodreads still doesn't offer half stars.(less)

Though I was hesitant at first about the series switching from a single protagonist's (Zoey) point of view, I found I quite enjoyed the multiple viewpoints as it gave a much broader view of the series of developing plotlines.

Although initially I was a bit dubious about the...connection, for lack of a better word, that began developing in the predecessor to Burned between Stevie Rae and Rephaim...more

This book developed having multiple character perspectives even more. Because of the character development in this book, when I reread the other books I understood some characters much better. Once again, the idea of choice and free will is very emphasized, and also that things might not always be what they seem (for example, black isn't always darkness, and light isn't always white - those of you who've read the book will know what I mean). Wow! From the first word to the last this book is filled with action and suspense. Such a wonderful new chapter in the House of Night saga. I loved the multiple POV's and the intricate storylines flowing through the book. How what we assumed in past volumes is turned showing that while Zoey is essentially the main character we are shown that it isn't just about her, but about the group and all the decisions and choices they make. For those of you that have NOT jumped on this action packed/spirit filled/to much drama for your mama vampire band-wagon then I want to be the...more I know that I should be reviewing something else right now, but in the spirit of paranormal obsessiveness I just couldn’t control myself. I have been waiting (literally) for months for “Burned” to be released, and for those of you that follow the “House Of Night” series I’m sure you have my back on the sudden book ADD I developed yesterday morning.

Anyways,

For those of you that have NOT jumped on this action packed/spirit filled/to much drama for your mama vampire band-wagon then I want to be the first to scold you. (Shame Shame!) and to tell you that there is plenty of time to catch up… and I do mean catch up. This series is NOT one you can pick up in the middle and hope to have a clue as to what is going on, the continuing plot is extremely complex and boast a VERY large cast of characters. (the total history is necessary…trust me)

!!!!STOP!!!!

Disclaimer: If you have not read “Tempted” yet do not read any further because there is a VERY BIG spoiler in the paragraphs below…don’t say I didn’t warn you.

After a shocking (I actually screamed out loud) ending to “Tempted” I was a little concerned that “P.C and Kristen Cast” had jumped the shark by killing off their main heroine, but again… this Mother/Daughter duo shocked me with their ability to twist the story to their favor. “Burned” like all of the other HON novels was action packed from cover to cover and in a surprising twist…amazingly current. How you ask? Well, for starters they made a “Glee” reference which, being a lover of the show, I found very amusing (and accurate) also the characters “generic” cell phones from the previous novels suddenly turned up as hip little iPhones in this novel.

The writing was (as always) flawless, as it should be by now, and even though additional character building could have been considered unnecessary, I was please to see that “Cast” expanded upon her already (aggressively) detailed characters. The plot was broken into several different stories, (Zoey/Stark/Heath – Stevie Ray/Rephaim/Red Fledgings – Aphrodite/Darius) each having a significant connection to the main plot, but also generating its own underlying subplot (which will be used in novels to come) There were a few NEW perspectives in the multi-narration (have no fear each person’s point of view was clearly marked) but more importantly… we were again left hanging (not as bad as last time, but enough to assume this is going to be an ongoing theme from now on.)

There were beautiful Indian boys, a lost giggling girl, an electricity wielding red fledging, a dedicated boy with a body full of cuts, 2 bulls, lots of kilts, even more fights, and 1 very broken soul.

Get to the store quickly my paranormal junkies because this one is going to sell out quickly.
