I like that this short story was not wrapped up nice and tidy. It showed Sherlock Holmes was, in fact, a mere mortal. This is the most human he has seemed so far in my readings, especially when he first finds out about the murder of Openshaw. He takes it so hard. It is not just that he could not prove his deduction right but also that someone else has paid the price for his failing. He tries to rectify the situation the only way he knows how but revenge still escapes him in the end.

Only three stars this time. (I am currently reading all the Sherlock Holmes stories.)

In this one, Holmes is out to solve a mystery involving a man who has received five orange pips, or seeds, in an envelope, along with the initials KKK written on it. Okay, any American would right away say we know who the KKK are. Holmes does, too, but needs to explain it all to Watson. (Does Watson never read a newspaper? Any history?) (view spoiler)

5 Words: Perfect length for a cuppa.

Quite a bitter-sweet ending to this one, with no clear indication as to whether Holmes was right or not. Which was honestly a little frustrating.

But my faith in the character tells me he is right.

Well, that was quite unusual, even if it started like any other case, Mr. Holmes couldn't save his client in this one, he found the culprits but no news were to come

A Tragic story where Sherlock couldn't save his client's ass.

"Three stars to a Sherlock Holmes?" you ask me, incredulously. "That, too, on a day when you claim to be Sherlocked?"

Believe me, I tried! I wanted to give it more and would have and could have, if it had a more fascinating end! You will agree that a story that begins with five dried orange pips and a death should have had a more exciting, a more dramatic end than plain arrest of the culprit(s) once they reached America? Am I honestly unfair in asking for a more thrilling end? An elaborate sto

3.5 stars.

This is a special, very great case of Sherlock Holmes. A few things makes it special. As some pointed out, it is the evil that Holmes pits himself against. A dangerous, terrorist American hate group! For any person today, the three letters will be no mystery as it was to Watson, but the suspense comes in with Holmes battle against cold-blooded killers. This one is also very highly recommended.

Re-reading this story after a gap of years I have to say that I was rather disappointed by weaknesses in the plot. Beware, plot details to follow.

The murders are described like revenge killings although the ostensible reason is that the murderer simply wants to recover incriminating papers. It's not clear why the victims didn't make more effort to hand over the papers and thus presumably save themselves or the murderer didn't make more effort to get the papers either before or after each killing

Ah, the first story, however short, to be added to my 2016 reading challenge! I have been a massive Sherlock Holmes fan for years now, and I thought it quite time to read the original Conan Doyle stories. The Five Orange Pips was an origin story I'd wondered for a long time about. The "orange pip method" is used frequently in BBC's modern television adaption of the stories, "Sherlock", and for some reason, these mafia-similar death warnings always intrigued me. So, I was very satisfied after rea ...more

The feeling of hysteria, the classy notion, the elegant proceeding and the baffled conclusion all lead to an enchanting agreement.

I strongly want to praise it because it obviously has a very luring inception and as the story develops it enlightens the mind with a thrill and imparts a chill of overwhelming feeling but somehow even with all its virtue it leads to an enchanting disagreement.

It was perhaps those type of expedition of Sherlock Holmes in which his activity were very mild and the dialo

My first sherlock holmes story. It wasn't too bad, but I thought that it needed more.

“Philosophy, astronomy, and politics were marked at zero, I remember. Botany variable, geology profound as regards the mud stains from any region within fifty miles of town, chemistry eccentric, anatomy unsystematic, sensational literature and crime records unique, violin player, boxer, swordsman, lawyer, and self-poisoner by cocaine and tobacco. Those, I think, were the main points of my analysis.” - Arthur Conan Doyle

The Five Orange Pips by Arthur Conan Doyle might be the hardest story to judge as an American living in 2016. It is not a bad story, but it is flawed. I fear my review may spoil some people though I will not give actual spoilers, but talk about the mystery laid out.

A man comes to Holmes with a box he got from his deceased uncle. The box is monogrammed with the letter’s K. K. K….

Now some may say I’ve spoiled the story already and that’s the issue I take with this story. I do not know of the rea

I sadly have to say that this book is disappointing, especially the ending part. I agree with Holmes and Watson that John Openshaw's story was indeed very fantastic. However, it was such a regret that this book ended too quickly with, in my opinion, no satisfying resolution. The feeling I had when reading was like climbing up a mountain, with a beautiful scenery along the way, and expecting a great view upon the peak but I suddenly slipped and fell into a cliff. From all the Holmes series I have ...more

This is one of those stories that doesn't even seem like a story, but instead it seems like a retelling of a story. I guess that's really what all the Holmes stories are, but it comes across more in this one. Nothing really happens, and to top it off, the client is not helped and we're left with little resolution. On the positive side, I did like the connection to America, and I felt rather smart since information that I would consider common knowledge was information Holmes either didn't know o ...more

'Except yourself I have none,' he answered. 'I do not encourage visitors.”
