I first read this book back in the late '90s and have proceeded to read it at least once a year annually since then. I am now on my fourth copy, having read two copies to tatters and loaned out a third to a good friend (who is undoubtedly affected enough by the material for me to not warrant asking for its return).

This book has a special place in my heart and it's impacted my life in a signficant way. It all started when I met the author "by chance" in Asheville, NC last year.
At the time I was searching in my life and had travelled for a vacation to Asheville (my first time in Asheville actually). One evening I was in downtown and saw a group of people playing drums outside in the open air. One of the men playing seemed to stick out to me - somehow you could tell he had great pass...more

Ungh... this book was supposed to help me find my calling in life, but I just couldn't get going with it. Not only could I not make it to page 50, I couldn't even make it out of the introduction! Maybe some day I'll return to it, but probably not any time soon.
This is one of the most helpful books I've read on vocation. Levoy is an elegant writer whose synthesis of mythology, religion, psychology, and well-chosen biographical vignettes calls readers to be attentive to the many ways in which calls manifest themselves (including dreams, synchronicity, and illness). He shows us how to clarify our callings through the use of art, journal-keeping, other memory work, and pilgrimage. Finally, he helps us to weigh the costs of following or ignoring a callin...more
A book about many of the philosophies, intuitions studies, hobbies, vocations, etc.realized -as a calling- to change and or enrich ones life. A good book for reflection of ones past and encouragement for living life more authentically.

I can't get enough of this book. Every page inspires me and offers tidbits of profound wisdom in highly readable poetic prose. It joins other treasure books on my bookshelf and I buy copies for friends as gifts.
A collection of stories, lessons, and directions to help you find, tune into, and expand your calling in life. Not a book you can read straight through as it requires you to take time to think about what you just read.
After hearing this interview with Gregg Levoy, I read the first few pages of this and found beauty and insight.
I used this book to read before going to bed. It was just interesting enough that I marked a few passages and was able to keep reading, but just boring enough that it helped put me to sleep. :)
This is a classic. I read this many years ago. Loved it so much I bought a hardback copy to keep. I get it out often and it is well personalized now. Well researched and very inspiring.
This is a book about how to recognize the heart's calling and how to enable yourself to follow that cal.......
listen to the "inner voice" and coincidences to decide path in life
Very uplifting.
This book was given to me by a good friend of mine. Despite being in somewhat of a turmoil in my life right now, I didn't find this book to motivate me to do anything differently. The book is well written, and has inspirational, thought-provoking anecdotes, but I can't say it has changed my life after reading it. Perhaps I'm not ready to look for my calling, or perhaps I've missed the signs. I wouldn't dissuade anyone from reading it; I speak only for myself.
One of the most beautifully written and inspiring books I've read on the subject. I've probably gone through two highlighters and I'm already looking forward to rereading it.
I think this is the best book I have read on finding your way to what you are called to do. I have given numerous copies to friends when they are struggling with self-worth, why am I here, what am I supposed to be doing - you know, stuff.
This is not an Oprah book that fixes everything. Some places are hard to read because they require honesty with oneself.
I highly recommend!!!!

Full Disclosure: I am one of the people profiled in this book, which makes me know the author did a very careful job of listening and getting it right concerning people who have made big leaps in their lives, based on a sense of calling. In my case, it was leaving a natural gas company to become a poet. This is a great book for finding tools to discern what's next in your heart and soul.
Callings refer to your inner voice calling to you to do certain things in life. Its all about listening to that inner voice to unlease your greatest potential by living the life you really want to lead. I borrowed this book from a friend who was emailing me scanned pages to read and then, she lent it to me. I need to finish it and get it back to her! It's long!
Hearing a call is a very difficult discernment process. Sometimes the call is clear, but the path is not. Sometimes the path is clear, but the desire is not. Gregg Levoy has done an exceptional job at being an in-print spiritual director for those seeking an entrance into the process of finding a true calling and a more authentic life.
This is as good as they say. I have so many sticky notes in my library copy I guess I shall have to buy one. It's less personal memoir than a collection of wisdom from all over the place, and especially pulling together other people's stories (rather than, say quotes from Rumi). It's a great resource.
I liked this book a lot it gave me something amazing to think about. Can unfullfilled dreams really cause physical pain? Can studying the arts really help problems that need solved in life? It was interresting.
Everything you love to hate about self-help books!
I think this is a first rate book - written beautifully about the callings that all of us hear but are afraid or do not pursue.
I am learning to put the pause button on and listen to myself quieted. It is a new and interesting place.
a tad long, but I would recommend it, I will probably read it again to fully grasp it.
The book is good...Levoy is great live!
