Henry is sailing the seas onboard The Salty Carrot, with his dad, Barnacle Black Ear and all his pirate buddies. Henry has no intention of doing all those nasty pirate things, but all he wants to do all day is read, read, read. He loves The Old Hare and the Sea, and Rabbitson Crusoe. His dad is furious with his book-loving ways...until one day when Henry predicts a storm-a-brewing. Disaster strikes! and they are shipwrecked on a deserted island. But, Henry saves the day with all the knowledge an

Henry loves to read books like the rest of us. No one in Henry's world understands his love for reading until all of the bunnies are stranded on an island. Henry takes his knowledge from books and helps everyone to survive. All the bucanneers now understand why Henry loves to read so much. What a great book to share with young readers!

Henry is the son of Barnacle Black Ear, the captain and one of the fiercest of the Buccaneer Bunnies. Unfortunately, Henry prefers reading to pirating despite his father's pressure to participate in the pirate life. Once a storm arrives, Henry's reading soon proves its worth. A large portion of the fun in this titles comes from the details - lots of pirate talk and tidbits, but also several references that older readers and parents might recognize such as "Rabbitson Crusoe" and the

This was our first Henry book and when we finished we read Henry & the Crazed Chicken Pirates right away. We both liked both books and I hope to find a few more before Julia outgrows them.
That reminds me, these are actually good for a wider age group than a lot of children's books. My daughter is 6 years old and read everything from picture books still to YA chapter books. (If this need to be said I'll say it 'at times, when appropriate).

Henry and the B.B's is so adorable. Its about a pirate bunny who gets teased for reading all the time. But, when the pirates get stranded on an island after a storm and Henry knows how to take care of everthing b/c of books he is seen in a new light.

Oh my--this is full of humor in so many ways. And it's just begging to be used in a storytime, if I can just get the voices right. I think the K-5 storytime group will enjoy it best, as some of it may go over the preschoolers' heads. Of course, if I can get the voices, then they may just enjoy the storytelling of it even if they don't get the story. I'll have to think on it as my practicing goes.
Excellent find just before our water-themed summer reading. Great pictures. And "yay More...

Barnacle Black Ear, a Buccaneer Bunny, is pirate captain of the Salty Carrot pirate ship. He loves his pirate life. His only complaint? His son, Henry. Henry isn't interested in the pirating lifestyle. He just wants to read his books. He is ridiculed by the other pirate bunnies until they find themselves marooned on an island and are only able to survive by Henry's knowledge from books!

Black Ear has had enough of his book loving son Henry, who reads Rabbitson Crusoe while cleaning the deck. After the Salty Carrot ship is destroyed in a sea storm, Henry and the crew survive by floating on the chests that carries his books. Black Ear is proud of Henry for using the knowledge in books to start their new island and sees the importance of books. The artwork is impressive!

Henry loves books. Unfortunately his pirate captain father would rather he take up sword fighting and treasure hunting. Henry is made to swab the decks and put up with endless teasing about his book. That is until the pirate crew finds themselves marooned and Henry's book-reading begins to come in handy. This is a playful, adventurous, adorable read with a great message.

Since we're on a pirate kick I figured I get one in there that encourages something besides "Argh" and "swab the deck" and "Shiver me timbers" from men that I can smell just by looking at them on the page! :) Henry is the son of a pirate who rescues the motley crew with knowledge he has gained from reading! Right up my alley. Mackenzie loved it too...bonus!

Very cute (especially when being read to you by your 6-year old). It's all about poor Henry who just doesn't want to live up to his pirate captain father's expectations. We found this book a few years ago and the kids really liked it--anything with pirates is good. My daughter just rediscovered it and we all enjoyed it just as much the second time around.

This is one of the best books that I have run across for teaching small children why we learn to read. It brings in the girls because it is bunnies. The boys love the pirates. And nothing drives a point home like a smug buccaneer bunny saving the day by saying "I read it in a book." I use it at 90% of my library field trips.

A clever and funny adventure story that proves "readers are leaders". Quite a few of the jokes and references (e.g. Rabbitson Crusoe, Jean LeHare) will go over younger readers' heads, but they will still understand the plot and enjoy the book.

This is a good story to use if you are wanting to teach kids that it's okay to like reading, even if their friends don't like to read. The pictures are very colorful and detailed to grab your attention.

Captain Barnacle Black Ear, baddest of the Buccaneer Bunnies, is ashamed of his book-loving son, Henry, until the day a great storm approaches. www.hcpl.net

cute book that I read for Pirate day in preschool. They loved it. It was a bit long for them but they really did OK with it.

Read Aloud; 3rd grade; Great book to show the power of reading and learning; Might be good to read at the beginning of the year

A really cute book, but maybe too long for a storytime group. Probably better as a one-on-one read.
