From the creator of The New York Times bestseller Boing! comes the riotous story of a cat gone berserk-- four times over an in alphabetical order each time. Kitty is not happy when she's told that her favorite foods are all gone and all that's left are Asparagus, Beets, Cauliflower, Dill...and 22 other equally unappealing vegetables. So she: Ate my homework, Bit grandma, C...more

This is a clever twist of an alphabet book complete with a story line and mischievous kitty. The first alphabet is all the food that the owners planned on feeding the cat that made the cat turn into the bad kitty. This includes things like asparagus, beets, and cauliflower. The next alphabet depicts all the naughty things the kitty has done to rebel against the food that he dislikes. Some of his naughty tasks included damaging the dishes, endangered the goldfish, and flooded the bathroom. The st...more

This book is a well designed and create alphabet book. When picking up this book I thought it would be just like every other book I buy, but it is very different. The nice thing about this alphabet book is that it has a story line and doesn’t say A is for apple… B is for bear because I personally think that little kids would get bored very quickly. The book begins by saying that their cat wasn’t always bad, but one day the Kitty heard mom say that she ran out of cat food and would have to feed t...more

It’s always a special treat to hear a favorite book superbly read. Who doesn’t love Nick Bruel’s Bad Kitty series, and who better to deliver it with appropriate comic appeal than Emmy and Tony nominee Vanessa Williams? Yes, it is hilarious but it is also a four-part alphabet book that will have youngsters learning their ABCs whether they intended to or not.

Our story opens when Kitty finds out that there’s no more cat food in the house, so she’s going to have to make do with veggies - Asparagus...more

Here is the bedtime story from last night. Sadly I am nursing a bad cold so reading is out for me. Thank goodness Vanessa Williams agreed to read for us. She is willing to read for your babes too! How? Well she is on CD reading Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel. It sure did save me since I was really down and out last night. It was hard when kitty was told that her favorite foods were all gone and that all that was available was asparagus and beets and cauliflower and dill and lots and lots of other veget...more

By looking at the cover, I would have never guessed that this book would turn into an ABC book. I loved it! The reason the kitty was bad was because his owners were going to give him vegetables that he didn't like. Each veggie that was listed was in ABC order along with a picture underneath. Then it talked about all the bad things that the kitty did such as: Ate homework, Bit grandma and Clawed the Curtains. This continued on for each letter. Then, once the kitty was given the food he wanted he...more

LOVED. IT. This was a random book from the library and at first I was sure I was going to be bored out of my mind. The author goes through the healthy food (A-Z) in the house and why the kitty hated those foods. But then it started getting good. Kitty exacts her revenge for the healthy food in wonderful A-Z fashion. My favorites are she "hurled hair balls at our heads," "loitered," and "plotted against us."

Eventually the fridge is restocked with a wonderful assortment of A-Z foods suc...more

Bad Kitty wasn't always a bad kitty, in fact she used to be a good kitty, until the day there was no kitty food in the house, only 'healthy' food. Bad Kitty then proceeds to destroy the house to show her displeasure. Once appropriate food is provided, Bad Kitty becomes good once more, although the reward she receives for her good behavior implies that her good behavior is not going to last. The following books contain the same sort of humor. Interestingly several of the follow-up titles are chap...more

This bad kitty does everything in the alphabet, more than once. I laughed out loud. It's irreverant and would be truly appreciated by any child who ever had to face life in a house with a maniacly moody cat. If you have kitties instead of kids you will love this book, even if you need to give it to some kid or family you know just to keep up appearances.

Bad Kitty by Nick Bruel is very funny. Someone's kitty gets upset when there is only "healthy and delicious" food in the house. No Cat food. The alphabetical listing of these wonderful foods is fun and then the alphabetical list of the bad things the kitty does are hilarious. When the cat owner goes shopping and we hear about the alphabetical list of "weird" food that Kitty likes we are amazed. Then there is an alphabetical listing of all the good and repentive behavior that Kitty exhibits. 4 ti...more

BAD KITTY ROCKS!!

This book had me in stitches!

It's all about a black kitty who is hungry. But oh noes!! There's nothing in the pantry but healthy food!!

ANd that means...

Kitty is going to be... BAD!!

In this ALPHABET BOOK we learn how a good kitty becomes a bad kitty when her diet is threatened by the thought of eating such things as carrots, eggplants, and horseradish.

I agree with kitty... that would make for a very bad kitty.

One of the most delightful picture books I've read! Nick Bruel's Bad Kitty takes the naughty feline from icky vegetable retaliation to apologizing for her bad behavior...when she discovers her favorite foods, like Chicken Cheesecake and Lizard Lasagne, are, once again, stocked in the house. This senior citizen laughed out loud at the story and illustrations of Moose Ala Mode, Hippo Hamburgers and Uncle Murray...huh? (You have to read the book) Even my equally senior husband loved it!

I had to put this in here for any of my friends with young kids. My daughters love this book. It's an alpabet book about a cat who is told that they are all out of catfood and it will have to eat vegetables. The cat becomes a bad kitty and takes horrible revenge on the household. The book goes through the alphabet four times--first when it is describing the vegetables kitty will have to eat, second when it describes bad kitty's revenge, third when the owner go out and buy the kitty all sorts of...more

Does Children's literature really need another alphabet book? When it comes to merging the alphabet with the mischievous character of "Bad Kitty" then the answer is "yes!!!" I purchased this book for my four year old niece for Christmas and she loved it! My other students really enjoy "Bad Kitty" chapter books, but I wasn't sure how well the character would translate to picture books. After reading it through the first time to her, she wanted me to read it again. I delighted in doing it. In addi...more

Kitty is out of food, and is upset that her owners have provided her with an alphabetical list of fruits and vegetables as meals. So Kitty goes on a rampage of her own, also alphabetical, where she attacks and/or destroys much of the house. Then his owners comehome with plenty of Kitty friendly food, leading Kitty to try an make amends for her misdeeds, also alphabetically.

Author/Illustrator Nick Bruel has produced a book that takes the reader through the alphabet four times, with a great deal o...more

This book is fantastic! I think it is wonderful for younger and older elementary students alike. FOr young children, there is the alphabet aspect, listing foods kitty likes and doesn't like, and ways that kitty is bad as well as helpful. For older students, the humor in both the words and the pictures is great. I think older students would pay special attention to the illustrations, noting details such as how kitty's eyes are slitted open when he is bad, and wide open when he is good. ALso, Kitt...more

I hadn't given "Bad Kitty" much thought until after one of my students ordered "Bad Kitty Becomes President" or something along those lines. She was saying how funny the book was. When I spotted this book and "Poor Puppy" at a garage sale, I quickly grabbed them and ordered them. My second-grader's recommendation was very appropriate. It WAS funny! I read them to the class and they thoroughly enjoyed them too. They had great vocabulary and pictures. "Poor Puppy" leads way to a discussion on the...more

Nick Bruel shares his story of a kitty that was once well behaved. One day she heard the owner say “Oh, dear! We’re all out of food for the kitty! All we have are some healthy and delicious…” and names healthy foods that begin with the letter A all the way to the letter Z! The kitty was not happy whatsoever and begins to destroy everything around him. Bruel’s artistic work again names 26 things the naughty kitty does starting with the letter A to the letter Z, such as “Flooding the bathroom” to...more

This picture book follows an exceptionally bad kitty that proceeds to punish its family for not coddling it as they should. Basically, this is a picture book for kids -- which sounds obvious, but usually isn't. I often pick up books for my kids because they appeal to me -- they're quaint, beautiful, or have a great message. As an adult, I found the illustrations in this one garish, the cat ugly, the text way too long, and the meaning pretty much absent.

My kids love it.

They find it hilarious and...more

Kitty becomes bad when the house lacks food. Use of alphabet is repeated four different times in the book--first to describe healthy food that cat "acks" and "eeks" over...a second time to show her actions when angry such as "ate my homework, bit grandma..etc" and the third time when the owner returns from the grocery store with foods to appeal to kitty and finally to describe the positive behaviors exhibited by kitty once the inner food beast is soothed. I'm not sure how it would translate to a...more

Kitty is usually a very good kitty. One day her family runs out of her kitty food. All that's left in the house is eggplant, horseradish, parsnips, mushrooms and more. Kitty decides to be very bad. She eats homework, hurled hairballs, ruined rugs and other misdeeds. Finally her family comes home with food for Kitty. For example: Insect ice cream, penguin pizza, whale waffles and more. Kitty decides to be very good again. So she is nice to mommy, hugged a mouse, was polite to the vet among many o...more

She wasn't always a bad kitty. When her family runs out of cat food and tries to serve her vegetables (asparagus, beans, cauliflower--Ack!), kitty makes her way from the alphabet from "Ate my homework" to "Zeroed the zinnias". This is a super-alphabet book because it runs through the alphabet four times in truly quirky fashion. Kitty's expressions are hilarious as she veers from horror to loitering to mopping the bathroom floor. The silliness will appeal to preschoolers as well as the older alph...more

A bad kitty teaches children the alphabet.

My Take
My favorite part of this book was the info pages at the front of the book. Very clever and cute. For the rest, yes, Bruel was also quite clever in his use of the alphabet to explain how bad the kitty is, what foods the kitty liked and disliked, and how the bad kitty apologized to everyone. I could wish he had been more clever in some of his letter choices.

Cute ending, though.

Bad Kitty is the first of three books (the other two being Poor Puppy and Bad Kitty Gets a Bath) featuring a "bad bad BAD kitty" who wasn't always bad. Bad Kitty is destructive when things don't go her way. She's somewhere between your typical cat and your typical toddler.

Like many picture books for the children in pre-school to early elementary school, Bad Kitty uses the alphabet to frame its story. In most of the alphabetic picture books I've read, the alphabetic sequence is completed one, may...more

CIP: "When a kitty discovers there is no cat food in the house, she decides to become very, very bad."

This silly alphabet book introduces audiences to a cat who definitely has a mind of her own and tends to take matters into her own paws. Bad Kitty knows what she likes and what she does not, and everyone else knows it too! Bruel introduces younger readers to new words and ideas, and older readers and audiences will get a kick out of Kitty's antics. A fun read, but slightly long for the younger s...more

This childrens picture book entertained the hell out of me. Do I think many children know what UNICEF is? Do I think they will get all the jokes? Do I think its good to make kids hate vegetables? No, I do not. But I laughed several times while reading it and that makes this book rare and special in a field of childrens books that can sometimes be incredibly inspid. Give it to a child in your life that likes to be read to.... so you can read it to them and chuckle.

Bad Kitty is one of those cute books that students will just find themselves loving and sometimes probably laughing at. This angry kitty does everything that is not acceptable when it doesn't get its way. Have a discussion with students about how they feel and act when they don't get their way. This book is very useful when teaching students about emotions and even the alphabet because there are names of foods and behaviors on every page that begin with the letters in the alphabet.

This book is adorable. I saw it, was intrigued, and was quite happy that I did.

There are so many times where I go "oh, my cat would totally do that." I love the unique way of teaching the alphabet, especially with the cat's reactions matching one of the letters on the page. It is glorious!

I really want to buy this book some day. Couldn't justify it because it was close to 17 dollars and I don't have kids, but one day, I shall get a copy of this book. *nods*

I picked this off of the shelf today because I've seen other books in the series advertised. It was quite imaginative, and I had no idea it was an alphabet book. Four times through the alphabet-- healthy foods that make kitty do bad things, then more appropriate foods that make her do more appropriate things (or at least make up for her earlier actions). The objects are sometimes ridiculous, such as "an eXcess of Tyrannosaurus reX" but that's what makes it enjoyable.

This is the number one best kids book I have ever read with my daughter. She is only 4 but she memorized the whole thing. I am willing to read this again and again with her, and we both still love it. It is funny, there are comic-strip type illustrations that make me laugh, and every time we see our own cat stretched for a belly rub we say, "Invited Affection!!" Read this to your kids. There are more books afterwards, but this one is the easiest for kids to follow.

This was a fun story, if a bit long (IMO). The copy I checked out from the library came complete with the kitty bite marks out of the cover--fun! I think this is a very creative ABC book but the antics seemed to go on a bit too long since we go through the alphabet three times (four if you count what is inside the cover). Still, I can see some children will really delight in all the kitty's antics when it doesn't get its way; and then how cute it can be when it is happy.
