In the same spirit of Wendy Mullins's "Sew U," this book celebrates sewing as a legitimate hobby with all the sex appeal and make-do cred it deserves. It has all the depth and scope you'd expect from such a heafty handbook. Beautiful pictures, useful step-by-step illustrations of a lot of those baffling techniques I've always wondered about - shirring, box pleats, embroidery stitches, french seams, and more. A small number of blah projects thankfully take a backseat to the more interes More...

I checked out a few guide-to-sewing books from the library. Of the group I checked out this one is the most thorough, has lots and lots of pictures, and the directions were the easiest to follow. Whereas, I do think there is a lot in this book I will never use (like the dressmaking section) I do think it covers all the basics and will be a great reference.

The Sewing Bible is a great resource book whether you are just starting sewing or getting back into the practice. It has every technique that is used in sewing and I loved the visuals given. I learn more from visuals than I do words when it comes to putting something together. This is a great sewing resource book that I will refer to often.

Ok so I did not "read" the entire thing (it is as thick as a bible), BUT it has been GREAT! My mom is a profy semstress, and this is like having here here to ask questions! So far it has had everything I have needed to look up, great photos, pretty good index, and clear descriptions.

Great looking book. A good how-to of a lot, lot, lot of sewing techniques. The instructions are detailed, but are technical. I think someone who really wanted to learn could figure it out from this book. It’s on my to-buy list, and that’s saying something.

This had lots of photos...just not a lot of clear or detailed photos. I am very perplexed as to why others are rating it so high. Yes, it does cover a lot of topics, but I didn't find the photos to be illustrative of the steps at all.

It reminded me of the Encyclopedia of Sewing from Martha Stewart in that it was very complete and easy to follow. I wish it had more patterns, including one for the top worn by the model on page 113.

love this book - very clear directions and visuals. both basic and master techniques which is a bonus when you are ready to step it up. includes projects as well but most are not to my taste - too crafty.

This is a fabulous volume for beginners or intermediate sewers who want to learn more. The lessons are basic, but are clear and well illustrated with nice photographs.

I think this book could be invaluable if I could keep it around for when I needed it. Library books are such a tease ...

I'm really liking all the info packed in here, and (perusing different projects now) the projects/pics aren't tacky. (If you've seen many other sewing-bible-type books, you should know what I mean.... Icky, gaudy fabrics. Ugh.) I really would love to learn the shirring technique and make something like the vintage example shown on page 171. Pretty. Not that I can actually sew. Yet. :)

Lovely reference book. Exceptional quality paper and inks. Beautiful photography. I wouldn't rely on this as my only sewing reference, but it is an excellent addition to a collection. This would be a great gift for anyone who loves sewing.
