Upon recieving this particular novel this morning i was excited & intregued by the storyline and the mixture of a historical fantasy genre. The cover is apsolutely stunningly captivating and beautiful & it is the kind of book that touches ones imagination visually even before you begin to read inside. I was very touched by the equally pretty bookmark and beautiful inscription within from the author, who was so generous as to sign it. I am not only a huge lover of historical fiction but a...more
The first book in a series set in the medieval world of Athlandia, Blood and Allegiance introduces the reader to a relatively small cast of largely related characters, members of the royal family of Athlandia. The main character is a girl of fourteen, Bryony, who had been raised in an abbey until her cousin the king summons her to court, changing her life forever and plunging her into a tangled nest of political intrigue for which she is utterly unprepared.

I just want to thank Annette for kindly signing this book and letting me review.
Blood and Allegiance was a wonderful and beautifully written story set in a Imaginary Medievil world. I haven't read many books in the proper Fantasy genre and I am going to start. I really enjoyed this and read in a few hours.
Blood and Allegiance follows the story of Bryony who is sent to live with her cousin, The King, after growing in an abbey with nuns after her parents "died". Bryony is a really sweet girl. And...more

Quite a sweet, uncomplicated story. I think that maybe it should be aimed at a slightly younger age-group - 8-10 perhaps?
I'm obviously a fair bit older than the target audience, and I did find it a little simplistic, but the story is an appealing one. Just one or two niggles with the writing really - I found there to be too much description of unimportant details, particularly clothes, while some sections of what seemed like fairly important plot were a little skimpy. The antagonist's son was on...more

Since I am 19 and not 12 I expected this book to be well below my reading level.
I was pleasantly surprised. This book drew me in pretty quickly and after reading the first 30+ pages I didnt put the book down until it was finished. I think its a great novel for young girls as it has a piece of history and is not only about boys. I was also happy to not find a single "omg" in the book!

So I read the second before the first book. I was happy to read the first now. The story of the family that Bryony has not know is very compelling. It was hard to put the book down.
Bryony is a young girl of 14 has lived her life in the Abbey. Her cousin Unwin is the King and has decided she be moved to court. Bryony doesn't really know about her past or even the history of her cousin King Unwin. She has been kept sheltered. Bryony begins to hear about rebels and that Unwin is not the true king....more

First of all I just want to point out that I was also reading Harry Potter while reading Blood and Allegiance.
I think the title fits perfectly with the story line. Bryony finds out who her family is and she decides where her loyalties lie by the end of the book.
I am not sure that this book would really be taken well by a child. The story is easy enough to grasp but it's a little bit of a downer and most kids seem to like happier stories. Not only that but I seem to recall at least one pretty gru...more

I won this in a giveaway recently and as soon as I finished my last book I got onto this one. I read it in less than 2 days, it is quite a short book and it kept me interested. It is definitely more suited to children than adults but that didn't bother me at all. The characters are likable and Bryony is a great heroine.
The only real problem with this book is that I really want to read the 2nd part now to find out what happens. A great cliffhanger, looking forward to seeing what happens.

I realise this is a book for children, but I still enjoyed reading it a lot. Had I read this at a younger age I would probably have loved it since I was very much into anything related to medieval times.
The ending was well done, giving the story an ending while at the same time whetting my appetite for the second book!
