It can't be defined just as a "crime fiction", you can read it as a sociology book to see how society of Barcelona had been changing, as an urban planning book/guide to understand the transformation Barcelona had been living before and during the preparations of Olympic games. Also, you can see it as a philosophy book too. Montalban knows very well how to combine these things in a simple novel. This novel is a masterpiece but when it comes to the end of the novel I have to agree with the others. ...more

Maybe not the best Montalban to start with? I expected more, since it features three of my favorite subjects with soccer, a mystery, and great location. Not really a mystery, since there is no concealing of who perpetrated the crimes and the book is more about how it is all stitched together by the main characters. The passages that dealt with the soccer players and interaction between the private detective and police were definitely the best parts of the book. In fact, the book reads more like ...more

The characters and setting are all pretty ok, but the plot flubs and the author is too interested in characters that didn't really play a big part in the story to wrap things up cleanly. Disappointing.

I tracked this down in anticipation of my trip to Barcelona this summer. It was good enough that I'll give Montalban another chance. The characters were unique, and they spanned a broad spectrum. The detective story was something between entertaining and unusual. The social and geographical depictions of Barcelona, specifically Montalban's perspective on urban renewal, were - as predicted - priceless. But the food - the cooking and restaurant scenes - were mouth-watering! (Shades of Peter Mayle ...more

Molto deludente.

Ugh. This book was annoying. I read it because it was in the house and was so different from the long India book. Problem was that it was just good enough to keep reading, but utterly disappointing in the end.
Although I learned a bit about Barcelona, Spanish football, prostitution and cocaine...the plot was interesting, yet very frustrating, and the end was dumb.

A struggling Barcelona Football team seems as distant as the era of Central Committees but despite this being an enjoyable whodunnit I found it less compelling than the other books in the series, despite a mutual interest in Football. I wondered whether he was running out of ideas.

I liked this book but I feel as in some of Montalbán's other work the ending is a little disappointing
