To seventeen-year-old Faedra, faeries were nothing more than the figurines she collected and displayed in her curio cabinet. She was in for the surprise of her life.

Faedra had no idea that faeries controlled nature, and with a book no less. Nor did she know that her descendants had protected an ancient fae amulet for thousands of years. An amulet that if ever was reunited...more

This was a decent entry into the "coming-of-age-as-a-magical-being" sub-genre of YA fantasy books. I always enjoyed these types of books when I was young and I still like them occasionally as quick reads in between meatier books. Faedra finds out she is custodian of a magical amulet and that her family were once Fae but renounced it to live with humans. She has a guardian who spent her childhood disguised as her pet dog but turns out to be a sexy, young fairy. Along with his sister, Jocelyn, the...more

The description of this book intrigued me. I’ve always had an interest in fairies, and so I had my mom send it to my Kindle so that I could read it. When it got there, I pulled it up and started to read.

First off, I loved the “once upon a time,” beginning. Now, I understand that many people find that sort of thing boring and uninteresting, but I love a good “once upon a time,” and this book did a really good one. And I loved Faedra’s name. Faedra … it’s so … fairy-like. And Bennet reminded me o...more

Ebook Price: Free Total price i would willingly pay: £1.20

The Bad:

1. The love story was far to obvious, cliched and boring.
2. Faedra and Jocelyn became best friends far to quickly for my mind
3. There was not enough action, the redcaps didn't get a fair shake at being evil!
4. I wish the guardians were developed a little more, what's their history, why did they exist?

The Good:

1. The story was great, it had a great flow and was very engaging
2. Faedra was a pretty good character, Well developed but...more

Hello
What caught my eye was the cover, which is striking but not over bearing. I love fantasy and magical stories and as a recent purchaser of the Kindle, I was intrigued to find out what it's like to download, carry and use a Kindle. Naturally, one of the first books was this one.
I won't deny the fact that zero price had a bearing on my decision.
After reading it I would be very happy to pay for the story, which I did for book 2.
I won't give a synopsis of the story, but it's an easy read and you...more

Faedra has been raised by her single Father since her Mother’s mysterious death 11 years earlier. As she nears her 18th birthday, she is becoming aware of strange and sinister things happening around her.

When her birthday finally arrives, the mysteries about her past and future are revealed to her through a most unlikely source: a communication from her dead Mother. She discovers that she is a descendent of the Guardian Fae, and that her faithful dog Faen is much more than he seems to be.

The Amulet, by Alison Pensy, succeeds on several levels. Set in England and the world of Faerie, the book chronicles the adventures of Faedra, a young woman of mixed human and faerie blood, as she awakens to both her hereditary powers and responsibilities. As an adventure, the book certainly does not disappoint. There are chases, betrayals, loves and surprises aplenty.

Beyond storyline, the book also succeeds in blending the mythology of the Celtic Age wit...more
The Mulberry Review
Debut author Alison Pensy's book "The Amulet" (the first book in the Custodian Novel series) was an interesting young adult fantasy with beautiful descriptions and lovable characters. Pensy obviously has a knack for language and an eye for architecture. That being said, I found myself skipping over entire paragraphs of description just to get to the plot.

The faeries were sweet and handsome, but their personalities seemed stiff. I didn't really feel attached to any of the characters, and I especi...more

This was a free selection on the kindle so I wasn't sure if it was going to even be worth reading. Actually, it was pretty good. I plan on reading the next book in the series but, unfortunately, I think she has only gotten to the second book. I can't find any more at any rate. Faedra has the the potential to turn into a kick ass chick. Faedra has just turned 18 and her life has been turned upside down. She discovers something very important that has been kept secret from her; that many have know...more

Found this as a freebie for Kindles and thought the concept was interesting so I gave it a try. It was a surprisingly good story. A slightly slow start but quickly picked up and I wanted to continue reading it each day. However, even on the first chapter it grips you since it brings you into a heartbreaking scene of a young daughter about to lose her mother.

I've always loved the concept of faeries and this was a great concept for a story. The author was able to capture the Azran realm, where fa...more

I'm a huge fan of books with fairies in them and love that type of story even though I don't normally read the genre everyday. The Amulet by Alison Pensy is an excellent story as it really does feel like you can slip into the tale. An excellent quality in any book that I read and one that is hard to come by.

I loved Faedra's character. She's wonderfully written and I didn't feel like I was reading a teenager who could have been any other teenage character who suddenly finds themselves in this bra...more

Very much enjoyed this book and the character development. I am so involved I jumped right into the next book in theseries. So far, it is as good as this one!

Free book for the Nook Tablet.

When I glanced through the book description on my Nook Tablet, it declared that this book was about fairies. I am not the type of person who reads anything whatsoever pertaining to fairies...which is exactly why I picked this story up. I have been eager to broaden my reading horizons in a recent change of heart, and I am glad for it.

I truly believe this book could have easily slid into a popular young adult's fiction novel with better editing. The plot follows succ...more

I actually was pleasantly surprised with this book. For a first novel, I think the author did a pretty good job. It did have characters that were easy to like. I also enjoy the fairies and the ability they had to shapeshift. I loved the realm of the fae. I thought that some parts did drag a bit and some others were rushed, but I was drawn to the story regardless. Faedra did go through a change, like a lot of other characters on YA fantasy, but I think that the story was genuine and stand on its...more

17-year-old Faedra (your first clue there's more to our female main character)believes she's just a normal girl who is being raised by her father after her mother's strange death 11 years previous. When she comes of age on her 18th birthday, her world is turned upside down as she discovers she is the Guardian of the faery amulet.

In a world full of faery books, it's hard to come up with something new. While the story line was good, it was another faery story with yet another new appro...more

It's been a long time since I've actually read a book completely "fae themed". This free read on Kindle was just the book I needed to entertain myself after a severe "book hangover". The story was put together flawlessly, all the details in place as they were supposed to. The fact that it never had one particular point of view in mind, made the reader get an insight into everything that was happening to everyone. There were some parts of the story that were a bit cliché, but equally enjoyable. T...more

After this book I realized I'm not a big fan of fairies. Don't get me wrong I adore the little, funky fairies, with great sense of humour and maybe too much confidence, but the full-sized ones...well not so much. I find them, kind of wrong. Don't know why...:P

Anyways, this book was about Faedra, a Custodian of a fae amulet. When she turns 18 her powers are turned on and all bad things start to happen. She is being chased by uglie Redcaps, her dog turns into a handsome fairy and the worlds vegeta...more

Feadra is 18 when she discovers she is Custodian to an amulet which paired with a powerful book controls the weather in all realms. Her mother (the previous custodian) died when she was 6 and a gaurdian is sent to watch over her until she "comes of age" and can learn her destiny. I really liked that this was very different from other fairy books so many share character names and myths that I enjoyed the differences in this one it was a delightful change of pace.

This is the type of fairy story I would have loved as a preteen. It was fun to zip through it as an adult, although there were at least two jarring typos and some formatting issues on the kindle version. A typical hand-holding romance and magical adventure, with a few modern touches I personally could do without. The main character, Faedra, answers her cell phone while she's in the middle of a sword fight-lol!

For future reference if the kids want to read: pretty mild violence- the good guys hav...more

What a beautiful story. Once I started reading, I couldn't stop. The characters were very well developed & you get lost in the world that is created. I just loved it. I can't wait to read the next book!

This was my first fairy book. A free download from Barnes & Noble. Thank you very much.

I must say, this is not what I thought a fairy book would be like. It was not like the Fairy series by Daisy Meadows I see at the elementary school library. It was more adult if you can say fairy and adult in the same sentence. Ha ha ha. Anyway, it was a good story. I miss the characters already and can't wait to read the next one. The sword fighting scene with Faedra didn't seem very likely, but that is b...more

First a confession, I don’t generally like books about fairies and the supernatural world. A friend told me this book would change my mind and I was floored when I found that I just could not put this book down. It’s a great story about Faedra and her ever faithful dog. Faedra is 100% teenager but finds out she’s also part of the supernatural world, not of her own choosing. And, that ever-faithful dog turns out to be much more than a dog! Faedra’s adventures make this book a quick read because y...more

The Amulet by Alison Pensy

I only have the ebook edition, but it's a great read either way! I personally enjoy fantasy novels, and this one is not a disappointment. The beginning was a hook if you ask me.

This is no ordinary fairy-tale but I shall start is just the same...

It was no ordinary fairy-tale. To tell the truth, I've read this book more times than I can count -- quite literally -- and done a report on it. The beginning of this book is rather saddening, especially since it begins wit...more

I think if 12-year-old me read this book, she'd immediately insist on giving it 5 stars, and since she's in the target age group, her 5 stars should probably count more than my 3 stars. It's a very sweet book, and I enjoyed the way the author portrayed the beginnings of a romance. I loved the main characters and their interactions. I didn't really care so much about the plot, and I felt like there were times I just wanted the characters to do more. I was pulled out of the story by long blocks of...more

Wonderfully simple...or so it seems.

I have read this story and fallen for the lead character Faedra. She is all that a young lady is and still comes across as wonderfully naive, shy and still a bit of an extrovert with her friends.

Charming is the first thing that comes to my mind as I read this book. It reminds me little bit of the old Gothic reads but without the huge 'gloom and doom' feeling they are supposed to leave you with.
I would say that target audiences are from 12 - 18 would enjoy thi...more

This novel does not deserve the high praise it has gotten so far. (Why do people feel obligated to like something they get for free?)

The entire story is clumsily written, and very cliched.

The product description says, "After several comments regarding the editing, I sent The Amulet to be overhauled by the editor I found for The Emerald Staff. This is the newly edited version." I even re-downloaded it to be sure I had the "fixed"...more

Another YA/indie about fairies. (I so have not burned myself out on that "problem" yet LOL)

Faedra, just a few days before her eighteenth birthday, starts seeing weird things that cannont exist. She's a nice girl, if a bit bland--though I'm certainly not complaining, character flaws are awesome--who lives with her father in a cottage that has been in her family for hundreds of years. Her mother died in a mysterious way when she was young.

On her eighteenth birthday, she finds a note and a ring fr...more

As an adult, I didn't find the story at all enjoyable. The writer uses almost no description whatsoever and when she does, it's always cliched. The story has no feeling of originality to it.

Once I finished, put it down for a couple of days and had a good think about it, however, I realized that I might feel this way because the book isn't geared toward adults. Someone younger with less literary experience wouldn't yet be as accustomed to the overuse of cliche and the story itself wasn't bad at a...more

Honestly, I'd give this book more of a 3.5. I really enjoyed reading it, but there were a few things that confused me.

Let's begin with the impossible actions. There are a few scenes that seem impossible to me. The action described defies the basic laws of physics. I recognize that they're in another world with magic, so it's possible for unrealistic things to happen. However, the skeptic in my mind just doesn't agree with the possibility of defying the laws of nature in a book that's not science...more

The Amulet is an example of the common strand in YA fantasy in which a teenager discovers that he or she possesses a special heritage, accompanied by extraordinary powers, dangers, or responsibilities. As is often the case in these stories, the parent who could have explained the heritage or protected the protagonist is absent, leaving the young person to discover, explore, and struggle without adult supervision.

When Faedra turns 18 it is revealed to her that her long-dead mother was the Custodi...more

I was born and raised in England. I grew up near a medieval city, which is where much of the inspiration for my books comes from. Moving to the States in 2001, I eventually settled near a small town in mid Missouri with my menagerie of animals.
I also run a tax and accounting business. I started writing when I became so fed up with the real world, I decided to create my own.
