He was a pioneer in the study of the human unconscious and the impact of sexual desire on human behavior, and his 1900 work *The Interpretation of Dreams* is arguably one of the greatest treatises on psychology ever written. But Freud recognized that it was not an easy tome to digest, and prepared this shorter, more accessible version. First published in 1914, *On Dreams* ...more

While Freud does an excellent job in explaining the tracing of dreams back to passing thoughts or unfulfilled wishes/desires, I think he attributes too many of our passions and deepest yearnings to simple, instinctual sexuality. Freud, in my opinion, speaks more of his own psychology than he does to explain the reasoning behind dreaming for the masses. This observation, however, leads me to question the notion that one single methodology for interpreting dreams could exist and apply to all. It s ...more

This was so brilliant! Oh, God! Oh, God! I MUST read "The Interpretation of Dreams"!
I know I must make a summary, otherwise I won't remember half of what I've read (not conscious, anyway).
Basically, all dreams are wishes. And if the dream is much too weird and seems like maybe the opposite of something one would want, then it's coded.
Moreover, adult dreams are almost always sexual wishes, although one may not find in them anything to do with that, because they are so well disguised.

As far as course readings go, this one was actually kind of interesting. I managed to read all 80 pages in a night without wanting to hit something. While many if not most of Freud's ideas are outdated, they were the first foot in the door of understanding our own psyches. That doesn't mean I would have enjoyed this casually if I didn't need to write a paper on it.

Freud's theories are important; his writing is not. Necessary insofar as it introduces ideas which later theorists developed into more thoughtful and productive methods of interpretation.

It is, however, impossible to imagine theory and criticism existing in their present (and past) state without Freud -- meaning that, although his theories may be outdated and laughably convoluted, they have the added value of legacy.

نظريات جيده ...more

On Dreams by Sigmund Freud is a really tough read for an average teen like me. Freud is extremely thorough in everything he writes to the point where his work can be a bit… boring. I say this in the nicest way possible, seeing as his work was undeniably important to psychology. His purpose in writing this book was to take key points from his Interpretation of Dreams and put them in a much smaller, easier to understand book for someone who wanted to get a good idea of how Freud would classify an ...more

I just finished reading this little book for the third or fourth time and I'm still impressed by its profundity (which extends far beyond what Freud explicitly says about dreams, by the way).

"On Dreams" is the 1901 layman's, condensed version of Freud's monumental and dense 1899 tome "The Interpretation of Dreams." While lacking the voluminous case studies, arguments and explanations of mind that are recorded in "The Interpretation of Dreams," this popularization presents an abbreviated explana

Freud's first major work was the epic Interpretation of Dreams, published right at the turn of the century (1899, that is). What I didn't know until recently was that the work was a pretty major commercial flop. It only sold something like 600 copies in total over the first few years.

Freud thought his work was very important, so about a year later he wrote and published "On Dreams," a much shorter, much simpler work, intended for a wider audience. It leaves out much of the dense material that m

It is not necessarily an easy or overly enjoyable read and although I started reading it because of my interest in dreams, now I keep asking myself why don't I just find something else. It is as if Freud is playing with me. As much as I find this text annoying, self indulgent and occasionally far fetched, it's absurdity keeps me going.

Now I'm not gonna argue with those who admire Freud and I do understand that being written a century ago this was one of the very first steps investigating human p

Well, it is a little out dated – but that’s fine. Frankly it’s Mr. Freud’s condescension, arrogance, and asinine assumptions about his audience and his critics that I found off-putting. Still it’s a decent book to get a feel for the history and origins of modern psychology. So it gets a 3 for that, though for entertainment it’s a 2 and for information it’s a 1 (as I said, dated).
So averaged out it’s a 2.

I'm not actually going to review this, only comment that it feels absolutely absurd to apply a star system to the founding texts of Western thought... OK, little review: this book is useful in that it's a condensed version of the mammoth Interpretation of Dreams. It worked well as a refresher, an inevitable source in the background for something I'm currently working on about dreams and creativity.
Abby Hagler
I suppose the only thing left to do would be to read The Interpretation of Dreams. I feel like I did not gain much by reading this, except exposure to the pathways Freud discusses ("exhaustively" in some cases, according to the translator) in Interpretation of Dreams. I gave it two stars for that merit. But I thought this book was terribly boring.

Yeah, yeah, everything is a veiled allusion to repressed sexual desires. We get it.

I still can't help but feel that this tells us infinitely more about Freud's own psychological problems than of the origins of anybody else's "obsessions" or "hysteria".

This book, like all the other books I’ve read by Freud shows Freud’s great ability to successfully argue for an idea that initially seems to be preposterous but that can actually hold up to close scrutiny. In this case Freud shows the reader the method by which our mind uses the sensorial input of our daily lives to express ideas that we may not have acknowledged even to ourselves in the distorted form of dreams. Similarly, Freud traces the beginnings of this capacity in children and its role in ...more

In English (title: The Interpretation of dreams

I tried to read it years ago and then stopped, not much time to dedicate to Freud. I took it back this year, just to give him another try. It's really nice to see how the process of dream analysis came in Freud's mind, this is something I admire. The other reason for that new try is I liked to analyse dreams when in high-school, I wasn't doing it the wrong the way. That the only good part of the book. Freud's style is heavy, I had to be patient fo

Freud was an Austrian neurologist and the founder of psychoanalysis, who created an entirely new approach to the understanding of the human personality. He is regarded as one of the most influential - and controversial - minds of the 20th century.

Sigismund (later changed to Sigmund) Freud was born on 6 May 1856 in Freiberg, Moravia (now Pribor in the Czech Republic). His father was a merchant. The
