Grabbed this one at the library yesterday because I liked the cover and it's by the venerable Jane Yolen. Truth be told, she can be a bit hit or miss - what do you expect from someone so prolific? But this one was definitely a hit! Told in rhyming verse this is the story of an upcoming Faerie Ball with a teeny bit of a Cinderella twist (minus evil step-siblings). The whole thing is hugely enhanced by the illustrations by Gary Lippincott. They reminded me quite a bit of Tony DiTerlizzi's in the...more
3.5 - Another reviewer called Jane Yolen 'hit or miss' and I have to admit that I'd have come up with those words to describe the author/her stories if I had thought of it. That is exactly how Julia and I feel about Yolen and her stories also. We both tend to go for her rhyming books more, the ones along the lines of this.
And this isn't bad by any means. It's actually quite good, with fantastic, alluring, detailed illustrations.

Told in poetry and rhyme, gnomes, goblins, and dwarfs are invited to the fairies ball. The many different creatures are seen rushing and getting ready in excitement until we finally see the ball scene, which is very detailed in illustration. The long lost fairy arrives at a quarter to one, when dancing was done, and we find meets her Prince Charming, leading us to the next ball. This is a cute book I would recommend to any young child who likes fairy-tales, balls, or princess stories.
I'm not crazy about Yolen's books about fairies or dinosaurs, but this one is exceptional. Great for invented language and literary devices. The story was a bit of Cinderella in fairy world, but it was useable in the demonstration of quite a few of the literary skills I might explain to the intended audience of a book like this.

The fairies are giving a ball and everyone s invited. Don't be late, dress in your best, and come to the fairies' ball.
What I thought: Pure poetry! I can't stop admiring Yolen's way with words. The story was enchanting. The rhythm of the words is wonderful. They really capture the magic of fairies an the like. The almost begs to be read aloud. The illustrations are fantastic--so detailed. I looked them over several times.

Wonderful illustrations! I actually know the artist, Gary Lippincott. Took him years to complete it, but it was well worth the wait. The poem itself is lovely and flows well within the illustrations. It's a nice keepsake book for those interested in the fantasy world. The characters are cute and funny, but the backgrounds are what gets me. They're stunning!
