I can guess why this book has such a low rating - most of people who read and rated this had to read it for school, which automatically means lower rating. Add that and the fact that you need a dictionary for the archaisms, and there you have it.

To be honest, I wouldn't have picked it up if I hadn't had to read it for school. But once I gave it a chance, it wasn't so bad. It even got slightly better as I progressed. I actually understood most of the text - the dialect was close enough to the lan
I don’t know what has to happen to me to say that I like this book. Unbearable to read and digest.

I didn't really like it. I too had to read it for school, or otherwise I would not have read it, simply because I'm kinda reserved towards domestic historical books. I realize its literary and historical importance, but there are too many things that I don't like: the language is archaic, although still fairly comprehensible, the topic is not something I usually read, and the writer overemphasizes religion, which really bothers me. But that's just me. It may have to do with my taste, and my age, ...more

Since this is usually considered as the best piece of Croatian National Revival, you can easily tell that Romantic era in Croatia was completely out of focus. Long story short this is tedious and unreadable. The only reason why I gave it two stars instead of one, which it actually deserves, is because of the character of Smail-aga. I can't even make myself explain it any further, it's that much boring.
Yes, it is difficult to read and understand the language (it should be modernized, but the text would lost a lot - probably today there is no person who could have managed to keep the essence of the translation of the text), but who takes the trouble, for sure he will like it.
Though rife with biblical motifs, the story is everlasting.
Of course that teenagers don't like to read when they have to read something so heavy in school.
Neobicno, nezanimljivo i nista posebno.

Ivan Mažuranić was a Croatian poet, linguist and politician—probably the most important figure in Croatia's cultural life in the mid-19th century. Mažuranić was born into a well-to-do yeoman family in Novi Vinodolski in northern coastal Croatia. He became a man of many abilities: he spoke 9 languages and was well versed in astronomy and mathematics. His realistic assessment of strengths and weakne ...more
