I really wanted to give a 4 1/2 star rating to this beautiful, sweet story. A book that touches the reader's heart like this one is the reason adults should read children's literature. Everything for a Dog is the second book featuring the pups who were born in the wild and found themselves alone and fending for themselves. The first book, A Dog's Life, was the story of the female dog, Squirrel, and what happened to her after becoming separated from her brother. It was a heartwarming story, t...more

I knew I had to read it when I saw the cover picturing a gorgeous golden retriever who resembles my beloved yellow Labrador, Max. I’m a softie when it comes to dog books, and I knew Martin wouldn’t let me down. The book consists of three parallel stories told in alternating chapters, one involving a dog named Bone, the others about two boys named Charlie and Henry.
Bone is a stray puppy who tells his story as he moves from one family to the next (much like Edward from my all-time favorite ...more

This book warms the reader with the purest sense of love—a love between a kid and a dog. In this sequel to A Dog’s Life, we are submerged in a story told in three, alternating points of view.
The first is of Bone, an abandon dog, who after living with three different families—if only briefly—wanders the countryside season after season, picking food from garbage piles and searching for a permanent home. The second point of view is of a boy named Charlie who is struggling to find normalcy af...more

This book and its companion volume, A Dog's Life: The Autobiography of a Stray, begin with two stray puppies named Squirrel and Bone, who live together and go off searching for a home after their mother inexplicably disappears one day. Early on in their story Bone and Squirrel become separated, and the result is these two books: A Dog's Life, which follows Squirrel's journey, and Everything for a Dog, which focuses on the path taken by Bone.

Everything for a Dog is very, very much m...more

Everything for a Dog
by Ann M. Martin
This novel is told in 3 voices. The first voice, and my favorite, is the voice of Bone, the wild, stray dog whose interactions with humans are hardly pleasant. I really felt for Bone; I wanted to adopt him and make him my dog so that he wouldn't know hunger or sadness. Oddly, I felt more sympathy for this animal character than for many human characters I have read about—perhaps because dogs are so innocent. The other two voices are of Charlie and H...more

Bone never had life easy. Born in a shed, he's orphaned as a puppy, and then continues to wander, just trying to survive, He goes in and out of homes, but no humans stick around for too long...

This book is just gorgeous.

It's incredibly easy to read, so you can recommened it to any age group, and the story is just marvelous.
The interweaving stories were so well done, I had this big 'OOOOHHHHHH' moment when the connections were revealed.
It's one of those stories that make you want to be a kid again. I mean, it makes you feel like a kid, so you're sad when you put the book down! I just wanted to be as inlove as the characters were with their dogs, but kids seem t...more

Everything for a Dog by Ann M. Martin is a great touching book with some very sad moments, some funny moment with the old couple and with his owner Susan, and several sweet with his brother Bone. Ann M. Martin is very clever by showing small children what happens to wild animals and why we should care for some gentle wild animals. I feel Ann M. Martin is so clever because many schools are requiring the classes to read that novel. I remembered the 5ive 6ix in Hackensack, Ms. Flynn's class we rea...more

I love Ann M. Martin. I've always thought she was a cat person. She is a cat person. I know she's grown up with cats and had her own as an adult. She does write characters with dogs, but mostly the cat is what's important. She did end up adopting a stray dog, who's story is told in the companion book A Dog's Life.

This book is set in three stories, one from the view of a dog and the other two of children. I love how the stories connect. It's surprising how that happens. I reall...more

This was a sweet, heart-warming tale. The problem was that I felt like I was having de ja vus for the first half of the book. It turns out (and there is no indication of this in a prologue or on the dust jacket or anything, that I could see) that this is the companion/sequel (?) to "A Dog's Life," which is the same (but slightly different) story from a different stray dog's point of view. I think I would have loved this story, told by 3 different narrators, spanning two generations, ha...more

This was a thoughtful and heartfelt book intertwining the stories of two boys who have experienced losses in their lives. My mom and I definitely teared up a few times, and some of the content was painful for me, (animals lovers beware-pretty intense dog injury scene!)This story was well written, and the author really seems to remember what its like to be a kid. But I must say I expected a different, and better ending. Also, the author completely left one character hanging, and that made the end...more

This book made me a sniffling mess. I love a good cry as much as the next person and this book certainly knows how to pull on the heartstrings. Super sensitive kids might be upset by some of the violence (toward dogs) or tragic accidents along the way.

The story is told from three perspectives. Bone, a dog that makes his own way in the world, describes learning how to be a pet. Henry, a young boy, wants nothing more than his own dog. And Charlie, another young boy whose brother...more

In this review I am going to write about Everything For a Dog by: Ann M. Martin. This book is about three different stories about a dog, a boy who had a loss, and another boy who his only wish is to own a dog. The dog lived with his sister and mother. At the beginning the mother dies, so the brother and sister dogs have to go and find a new home and live by themselves. The boy who had a loss, his loss was his brother died over the recent summer, and he is still remembering his feelings for h...more

I'm really not sure what to think of this book. It's in the Junior Fiction section of our library, and got good reviews, so I thought I'd read it to our girls. But from the start, this book was a struggle. If it's for children at all, I'd recommend it for those in 5th grade and higher. The way the author cuts back and forth from Bone to Charlie to Henry is distracting for younger children, especially since their connection isn't made clear until the end of the book. We could only read a max...more

I read this in one fell swoop and was surprised about 3/4 of the way through -- maybe I wasn't reading carefully enough and missed some clues? This was one of those books that made me want to turn back to the beginning and reread as soon as I'd finished it. A sign of a good book. I also kept trying to figure out if there were connections among any of the characters in this book and in her previous "A Dog's Life." I think this one was more cohesive than that.

Loved it! What a great companion book to A Dog's Life! A brief synopsis.... Two wild puppies are separated after someone picks them up, decides they don't want them and then dumps them in a mall parking lot. Someone stop and takes only one of them. This is Bone's story, the other book is Squirrel's (his sister). You must read them both! Though they tug on the heart strings, both of these pups will find a place in your heart! Thank you for writing these!

I cried when I read Martin's A Dog's Life, and hoped that this book would be more upbeat. It is... barely. This is the story of Bone, the brother to Squirrel (the heroine of the previous book). It's also the story of Charlie, who "lost" his brother RJ one year and then, barely a year later, sees his dog/best friend Sunny shot by a hunter. And it's the story of Henry, who really really really wants a dog (but gets two hamsters and a cat instead). The interweaving of Bone's story, w...more

Recommends it for: animal lovers
A tender story of young Henry's yearning for a dog and young Charlie's experience dealing with his brother's death and who is comforted by his family dog, Sunny. The viewpoints change in alternating chapters alternate, sometimes told from the viewpoint of the dog, Bone, who is searching for a home. I began to wonder what the connection was between Charles and Henry. The reader will be surprised when the connection is revealed and touched by the story of a young boy and his dog.

Everything for a Dog is a treasure for the heart. If you love dogs, you should read it. If you don't understand dog-lovers, you need to read it. Ann Martin has captured the essence of the bond shared between humans and their pets. There is love, empathy, and kindness in the story as well as grief. Join Bone, the Golden Retriever, on an adventure-filled struggle for survival that you will never forget.

I loved this story! I'm a sucker for a good dog tale (pun intended...) and this one didn't disappoint. The target audience is the 9-12 age group, but I think anyone who loves dogs will enjoy it. It's also the companion book to Martin's "A Dog's Life" but each stands alone as a complete story--Bone (the main dog in Everything for a Dog) and Squirrel (the main dog in A Dog's Life) are littermates that are separated early in life.

I wish I could give this four and a half stars. I really really enjoyed it, although not as much as "A Dogs Life" which this book is the sequal to. There was a bit of a mystery - the characters of Charlie and Henry fit together somehow and when it finally became clear, I thought, "OH! I totally should have seen that."

This is a fantastic read for 5th/6th grade animal lovers.

The story of three characters; Bone, Charlie and Henry. It is not until later in the book where the reader finds out how these three characters are connected to one another but they all are related to dogs. Henry would like a dog, Charlie has a dog as his best friend when his brother dies of an accident and Bone is a stray dog finding homes that are not quit right for him.

DCF book - It started off interesting with a chapter from a dog's point of view, but then too many story lines entered from different boys's point of views. I don't think it will hold students's interests; the connections aren't revealed until the last 50 pages of the book. The father's reasoning about dogs at the end of the book was disappointing too.

Everything for a Dog is a fiction story written for the young - ages 8-12 and its a quick read for any child that wants a dog or has a dog. Told from the point of view of three different dogs who remarkably cross paths in amazing fashion. This is a great story that is hard to resist and hard to put down. Without spoiling it, the events that take place may be a little questionable for young, young children, but may also generate some great family discussion. I recommend it to any dog lover.
