FOR SALE: a rare opportunity to purchase a beach hut on the spectacular Everdene Beach, Dorset. “The Shack” has been in the family for fifty years, and was the first to be built on this renowned stretch of golden sand…’ Jane Milton doesn’t want to sell her beloved beach hut, which has been the heart of so many family holidays and holds so many happy memories. But when her...more

From the first few pages I began to feel that this was not going to be my sort of book and things did not improve. It reminded me of Maeve Binchy’s Whitethorn Woods, where stories of separate individuals are linked by their visiting or belonging to a particular place, in the case of this book, the Beach Huts. I wanted to award it two and a half stars but the system did not permit so I reluctantly went for three. Probably just as well since everyone’s taste in reading matter is not my own.

I only picked up my first Veronica Henry book towards the end of 2010 which was the first book featured in the Honeycote series. That was quickly followed by the others the Honeycote Series, and following that I just haven't picked up another. I really enjoyed the Honeycote books, but they weren't books that left a lasting impression.

I started the book with an open mind and within a few pages, I was hooked. Jane Milton is the main focus of the story and before long we learn that her husband has...more

When i picked up The Beach Hut i was expecting a book full of short stories, each story being about one of the beach huts, however, as i continued to read each story through the book i found the individual 'stories' all intertwined with each other.
The setting for The Beach Hut sounds gorgeous, a real British seaside, with a row of colourful beach huts owned by individuals who would spend their holidays living beside the seaside. I was unaware that people would 'live' there for a week, i thought...more

The Beach Hut is Veronica Henry’s 5th stand-alone novel. It consists of 14 inter-related vignettes, each one named for a beach hut on the Everdene Sands beach front. In this excellent novel, Henry examines the unique culture that is characteristic of society in these holiday dwellings. At the same time, she touches on subjects as diverse as alcoholism, adultry, self-made women, unrequited love, financial advisers, mental cruelty, jealousy, loss of a life partner, ticking biological clocks, first...more

This is chick lit to appeal to a wide age range. This is not just about twenty or thirty-somethings but ranges across the love lives of teenagers to pensioners. A great read for the beach (says something in the title), you'll sail through it. It's not howl with laughter chick lit but it is has pace and interesting characters with interesting snippets of their lives to keep it going plus a seaside setting. What's more to like than a bit of sun, sand, sea, surf and a row of brightly coloured beach...more

After enjoying the Long Weekend so much I couldn't resist this book. I liked the book but I didn't enjoy it as much as the Long Weekend. This book takes a similar approach where there are a number of different stories followed at the same time. With this book, I felt there were too many stories to follow, some only visited once, and I struggled at times to keep track. While the Long Weekend had variety in the stories, most of these ones were love/partner related. I think this book was good, but...more

Whether it was the fact I have a major obsession with beach huts and the seaside and everything that links in with the two or not, there was something about this book which gave me that feel-good feeling - like the type you get at Christmas. I found myself as an extra character, there with all the others as they went through their journeys. A very enjoyable read and I would definitely recommend it to anybody who wants a easy-to-read book - Ideal for kicking back and relaxing on the beach.

This is not the sort of book I normally read, but it was one of the few books in the holiday apartment I was staying in, so I read it. It's an easy read, multiple characters with vaguely interlinked stories, set on a British beach one summer. Great for a plane journey because it's easy to dip in and out of, and there's a feel-good quality to it, despite the fact that one or two of the characters felt a little bit cliched. A good summer read!

Was lent this from a friend who described it as a lovely book and I totally agree, not in a dull way but in a lovely, can't wait to see what happens in the end way, fabulous end and I am glad I had a tissue for a bookmark!! Can't wait to read more of your books especially as I spent a lot of time in Cornwall growing up.x

Simple and easy to read. Having just finished Ellis' American Pyscho this was the perfect antidote.

Entertaining, light, witty - a lovely little read that I leant to a friend the very next day I'd finished it.

The only problem was that it finished too soon - the characters were all there. So much more could have been done.

THe book is about a block of beach huts in Everdene. It follows the story of Jane's family. The family has owned the beach hut since they were built. She's facing having to sell the beach hut following her husbands death.

Roy has helped out with the beach huts since they were constructed and has loved Jane for all of that time. They both made lives for themselves- but he carried a torch for her.

Various other families are introduced- who all have reasons for coming to Everdene.

I really enjoyed thi...more

This was a beach read that I got in Spain in a store with only a small selection of English titles. It tells the stories of various people who rent the huts on an English Beach or who come into that area for some reason. Some of their paths cross in interesting ways.

I really enjoyed reading this book. It was about a row of beach huts in a place called Everdene, North Devon. I found it easy to believe that these beach huts are actually there and that the more 'well to do ' families had bought them and the others were owned by the nearby Hotels. The huts themselves are the focus of the novel and each one has its own families and stories to tell. The story takes you from the past to the present very easily and did not really need a great deal of looking back t...more

Easy to read but a little slow at times, the characters are loveable enough but it doesn't necessarily get you hooked. I think it's a pass the time book rather than a must read, but pleasant none-the-less.

Fantastic!!! I couldn't wait to finish. Shame there weren't more pages to this book! Loved how the lives if it's characters, though written as individual stories, intertwined as the book progressed. A definite recommendation. It made me tingle and laugh at the same time. Well done Henry!!!

A great read but i find when lots of people are brought into a book i get a little confussed. i loved how all the lifes were blended and how it all comes together at the end.

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. As we are now enjoying beautiful spring days I could imagine myself sitting on the deck of "the shack" reading this book. A very enjoyable read.

In reflection I enjoyed reading the book as the story came full circle in the end, although keeping up with the different families/characters could be a bit of a headache!

Im a beach hut lover! Really enjoyed the different stories about people in their huts (which are nothing like mine and sound just fab) you start thinking as one chapter ends 'want to know more about those characters and what happens, however as you read on you do! Lots of characters made me have to think about them when they cropped up again!

This was an interesting book of intertwined stories about different generations of people who have enjoyed a special summer place for many years.

An easy read that ambled through the lives of folk staying in the beach huts at a typically English seaside resort.

Some of the stories continued throughout the book and others were short and sweet. Some of the characters stood alone while others became intertwined as the book progressed.

A pleasant mix of intrigue, love and family life from all generations. Many topics are covered and no sooner had one chapter come to an end leaving me wanting more from those characters, new ones had been introdu...more

Really liked this book and loved the way that the different chapters weaved different characters together. Great summer read.

Perfect light read for the plane. In fact, summer beach reading. Written as a series of short stories that tie into each other.

I really loved this book. I started reading it on a day trip to the beach and couldn't put it down. A wonderful holiday read
Nell
An enjoyable read by an excellent writer. I would have liked a few less characters and a bit more depth to some of the stories

loved it! this is definately holiday reading and it was just what I needed at the time. Escapism at its best.
Sue
I really enjoyed this book, short stories all interlinked with very satisfying endings. Loved it.

Very easy book to read, just what you need if you don't want anything taxing.

This book made me wish I owned a beach hut! Whilst I'm sure the life of a typical beach hut owner (in the UK) isn't quite like this, the structure of the book, switching from owner to owner, family to friends, was refreshing, fun and a good lazy summertime read.

Veronica Henry was a television script writer before turning her hand to fiction. She has published six novels which she describes as realistic escapism - her characters might have Agent Provocateur knickers drying on the Aga, but their problems and dilemmas are ones everyone can identify with. She is also on the writing team of Bafta-award winning Holby City.
