It's a pretty gut-wrenching story with a queer subplot, and there' something about the toughness and vulnerability of the main character that I really related to.     <body><![CDATA[Dorothy Allison's novel Bastard out of Carolina is one of the finest novels I've read in years.  I place her within reach of Flannery O'Connor.  I did, however, not like this novel.  I just could not feel the heritage, anguish, and love which I connected with in Bastard.  ]]></body>

    <body><![CDATA[I recommended Bastard Out of Carolina and got an early copy of Allison's newest book fresh and crisp from the library. It had it's points, but it didn't move me and I felt the prose was too pedestrian (I started Paradise and the contrast of prose styles was immediate).]]></body>
