I started this book several times but was not able to continue. Each time I started it I enjoyed the book however due to other commitments I had to stop. Anyway, I eventually completed the book. I felt it very long at points in the novel, maybe a bit to much explanation. There were certain sections of the book I found more interesting than the rest. But then again I guess everyone gets more interesting as they grow up. As for the characters, I instantly did not like James Steerforth and from the ...more

AN AWESOME CLASSICAL & AUTO-BIOGRAPHICAL DISCRIPTION OF A FATHERLESS AND LATER A COMPLETE ORPHAN BY DICKENS.......... WHICH WAS IN A WAY VERY CLOSE TO HIS OWN CHILHOOD............ THE PICTUREQUE DETAILING OF VARIOUS PLOTS, CHARACTERS WERE SO VERY LIFE LIKE THAT ONE IS MUCH CONVINCED THAT FOR SURE THE STORY MUST BE OF THE WRITERS OWN LIFE................... THE DIPICTION OF THE SALEM HOUSE,FACTORY , P.G.HOUSE ,ETC SEEMS TO BE REAL................ EVEN THE CHARACTERS LIKE DAVID'S MOTHER, LOYAL ...more

This was a disappointment for the reader of Tale of Two Cities, Bleak House, and a Christmas Carol. While Dickens can write, he didn't soar in David Cooperfield. It was more of a study of Victorian mores, rather plodding and pedestrian compared to the Great Novels (those that followed DC),

Slow reading, but most rewarding. Dickens uses first person narrative to render a fictional auto-biography of Cooperfield with its trials and tribulations. Occasionally, I found Cooperfield's remarks probing barbs at social mores and self depacating honesty.
