Reading this book has enlighten me about unconditional love. Love is not just between two persons who have mutual feeling for each other but it could happened with everything. As long as both parties have mutual feeling then love is there ;)

Rachel who is pure urbanite from London found herself inherited a house which houses stray dogs from her aunt. Having recently resigned from her job and leaving behind her boyfriend, she found herself managing her aunt's group of stray dogs. Soon...more

Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts is the first book I have read by Lucy Dillon. I was given this book to read by a client and on first glimpse I liked the look of the book, girly pink and white with glitter snow balls on the front. It looks like your typical chic lit book and then came the title of the book and this put me off. I am not really what you would call your typical animal lover and I would defiantly not put a book about dogs on the top of my to read list. All this aside I had run out of boo...more

Rachel is heart-broken and disillusioned. She has just had a break up with her boyfriend and lost her job. In addition, she inherited her aunt’s house in the suburbs, a dog rescue operation, and a kennel full of unwanted strays including her aunt’s border collie. When she goes to stay at her aunt’s house to sort out the mess and attempts to sell the house, she ends up delaying her ret...more

Ah, angst. When women are stressed out and dealing with emotional life changing events, they tend to worry themselves to no end. For a book with dogs in the title and two canines gracing the cover, this comes as a bit of a surprise to those expecting a warm and fuzzy read. With the introduction to an American audience of her UK release "Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts," author Lucy Dillon is hoping to connect with readers who fell in love with uber-successful, pet-themed novels like "...more

Rachel is a bit horrified when she finds out that her Aunt Dot has died and left her entire estate to her. Dot’s legacy is a boarding kennels in the middle of nowhere, a huge house and a lot of debts to go with it, and Rachel doesn’t much fancy moving and becoming at one with the dogs and their owners. However, when she arrives, she finds the people are nice folk with hearts of gold, and that the dogs quickly grow on you as well. Rachel soon begins to make friends with George, the dishy local ve...more

No one can have enough friends, whether they be four legged or two, and Rachel’s character is in desperate need of both kinds. It is easy to believe people without kids or pets are either selfish or self-centered, but this story just goes to show that independence is not always a choice. I really love how this author shows you both sides this issue, and though much of her story centers around re-homing dogs, she is also quick to point out that some people are not ready for one reason or another....more

Recommends it for: No one, sadly.
Woman goes to take over dead aunt's dog rescue legacy, woman meets dog, woman meets vet. Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts is well-written and incredibly predictable - which isn't terrible, in a book that is meant to be tear-jerkingly heartwarming. People who like dogs and love stories will inevitably enjoy this.

However, the nature of the mystery at the core of the book -- why her aunt lived as she did -- makes me see red. (view spoiler)[Ultimately, the aunt rejects marriage to the "per...more

I'm a sucker for a good dog book and Lucy Dillon's didn't disappoint. I thoroughly enjoyed this story about a 39-year-old woman, Rachel, who inherits a rescue kennel in England just after losing her job and undergoing a break-up. I had never read any of Lucy Dillon's books before but I enjoyed her style of writing. She is very good at drawing readers into a well-developed plot and creating likeable characters that readers can bond with. Add romance, a kennel full of rescue dogs searching for the...more

This book encounters three (eventual) couples living in a city, and follows their lives and experiences with pets and human relationships.

Pros: Heartwarming, cute, and an easy and quick read.

Cons: Predictable. This book isn't different from any other romance/pet book you've ever read. Problems-get a dog- happy resolution. Its was a little difficult to get used to the chapters jumping from couple to couple; Once you become invested in one couple, the next chapter jumps to ...more

This is another book that has had mixed reviews. The story of Rachel who inherited her aunt's house and rescue kennels. There are separate but connected stories about other characters - Natalie and Johnny who are desperate for a baby, Zoe whose husband has left her for another woman, Bill a confirmed batchelor and then the handsome vet! Through in a few dogs and some romance and you've got a great book. Ok it is a bit predictable, you can tell the ending probably right from the beginning but...more

I'd seen so many people liked this, I really wanted to love it. It was okay. I feel mean giving it 2 stars but it just didn't do it for me. Not enough depth to the characters somehow. I didn't care enough what happened to them. I expect books that have made it to the big print houses to offer something special but I didn't feel it with this one. I saw one reviewer compared it to Julia Williams books and i should have read that first. This is very similar indeed and I'm afraid I'm not keen on tho...more

I enjoyed this little book. Set in the English countryside, I liked the characters (although the author is a bit awkward introducing the rotating POVs at first), I liked the setting, and while it's wildly predictable, I enjoyed it anyway. I particularly liked spending time in the world of dog rescue and the idea of realizing that we don't really know people as well as we think we do (as the main character discovers about her deceased aunt). It won't be on any college reading lists, but it's a...more

I loved Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts. The story centres on three characters and their problems though Rachel is the main focus. Rachel, recovering from a complicated broken relationship, inherits a house and a dog rescue centre from an aunt, along with a few of her aunt's secrets; it isn't what she's used to or what she wants. Zoe battles life as a single mum with an unhelpful ex, two children and a demanding puppy, and Natalie and Johnny's lives run anything but smoothly while trying for a baby ...more

This is the book that won the Romantic Novel of the Year this year, so I hoped it'd be something a bit special. It's chick lit, but chick lit done really, really well - reminded me of Julia Williams or Sarah Duncan whose books I've enjoyed a lot recently. I mean, what's not to like? A large cast of characters - townie Rachel who inherits a kennels and dog rescue centre, a gruff (but attractive) vet, the couple trying to have a baby, the single mum struggling, the Aussie kennel maid, the sexy v...more

Rachel loses her man and her job in a single week, then finds out she has inherited her eccentric aunt's home for dogs. Not a dog lover or a fan of the countryside, what will London-chic Rachel do?? You know I'm not a fan of chic lit or romance, but the characters are real and the intertwined stories are touching. And if you like dogs, well I can tell you without giving away the plot that there are no sad endings in regard to these important characters of the novel. Really sweet!

I was first quite enchanted by this book and waited a lot out of it. I was a bit bothered by the sudden jumps to concentrate in other characters and their lives. The story also got more ridiculous towards the end and I was displeased by the main character and her inability to think logically. You could also tell in advance what was going to happen next.
It is a cute story though and every now and then managed to warm up my cold heart.

Enjoyed the book but not as much as I'd thought. Storyline was interesting, did drag a few places. I have to wonder how some phrases get by the editor, or whoever's job it is to catch these things.(FYI, Oskar is a dog)..."Freda folded her arms across her bosom, and lifted Oskar up into her lap." Wow, I'd love to have seen that. Not the only odd thing in his book, but the one that stood out the most.

This book incorporated three of my favorite things: Dogs, probate, and an unexpected love story. So, if you like those things, too, pick it up! It's a pretty quick read; I read it on the beach and around the pool while vacationing in Key West. The writing style was fluid, and the story has a momentum that keeps you reading 'one more chapter' after the next. It's great for traveling or a weekend read.

Oh dear. I liked it. I started bawling after three chapters and kept on reading right til the last page and felt a little lost when I had to put the book down.

Despite the obvious turns in the plot, the use of mind-numbing clichés, the lame attempt to create an old unravelling mystery ... I STILL liked it. Must be the abandoned dogs and their only wish to belong to somebody. Yelp.

I absolutely loved this book! As stated on the cover, it was so real and heartwarming.

I admit I was tempted to put down this book a couple of times. It started out very slow, and the author of course had to introduce the different characters separately. And because there are basically 3 groups of main characters here, it took a while and I started to get bored. I prefer books that start with most of the characters already knowing each other and then slowly building up their history a...more

What a delight! I just loved this book. The title sums it up - rescue dogs with their continuing faith in humans, and people searching for their own brand of "forever home". Ms Dillon has a very deft touch with a subject that could become cloying and sickly sweet in other hands. Her characters were real and I found myself very involved with them. And of course, the dear dogs stole the show. I believe Lucy Dillon has written other books so I shall look forward to them if they are publis...more

Really good book to snuggle up on the sofa with. Rachel has been left her anutie Dot's kennel's in her will. So she packs up her life in London to take it on. It is not so easy as there is not much money and she finds it hard with all the dogs. Also you meet some others who end up having pets and you find out about their lifes aswell.

Chick lit set in an English dog shelter, this was notable for not ending with a typical trite twu luv conclusion and for its wonderful portrayal of both the dogs and the rescue volunteers. Also, it made me want to make bacon sandwiches.

I'd rate this better than a lot of chick-lit I've read recently, but maybe the dogs in the story helped influence my decision.
It wasn't completely predictable, I called some of the story lines but not all of them. The ending wasn't all wrapped up neatly with everyone's problems solved, which I like. However, I didn't like the "drama" of the dead aunt and Rachel's mom, it was a bit too far-fetched for me.
If you're not a dog lover, this book might not work for you.

This was a great book, about new beginnings and
lots of love for dogs. It gives one the insight
that you can overcome complications and find a
fulfilling life.

British Chick-Lit. Two stars because it was just, well, way too doggy. As a cat persons it was probably dumb to pick it up in the first place. Well written, though.

Absolutely lovely. Winner of this year's Romantic Novel of the year. Very real, believable, and oh-so-lovely. Even if you don't like dogs, this will warm the heart.
Krista Mercer
The front cover promised a tale "like Bridget Jones - but with canines rather than chardonnay," and that pretty much sums up this book. A very enjoyable romp.
