What a wonderful book! Woody Guthrie's simple but evocative lyrics (with all of the original verses restored) are brilliantly set off by the marvelous folk art oil paintings of Kathy Jakobsen.
Jakoben's artwork is what will draw you into the book. Double page landscapes depict the plains, the desert, and the dust blown wheat fields of Oklahoma. All four seasons are beautifully rendered as well. There are cityscapes (including a striking New York City with the Twin Towers still standing) and idyll...more

This Land is Your Land the 10th Anniversary Edition is a beautifully illustrated book of the folksong by Woody Guthrie that we were all forced to learn in elementary school. It is a song about how we need to share the land that we have because it does not belong to anyone. It belongs to all of us and we need to take care of it. I remembered the basic lyrics from when I was young "This land is your land, this land is my land. From California, to the New York Islands. From the Red Wood Forest, t...more

This Land is Your Land is a song picture book recommended for students in preschool-grade 4. It is a songbook that is a tribute to the legendary folk musician Woody Guthrie and his well-known song “This Land is Your Land”. This song combined with Kathy Jakobson’s watercolor illustrations depicts the natural beauty of the United States. A brief biography of Woody Guthrie and complete music and lyrics is present at the end of the book.

I LOVE this book!!! When I was ready, I had tears in my eyes. This book is based on woody Guthrie folk song which was written in 1940s. This book takes us on a journey across whole country showing us the people, land, how big and diverse this country is. Also, each page contains beautiful painting-like pictures showing attractions and pride of each state. By the end, the author questions why in such big, reach, and beautiful country our people live without homes and food. His message is clear to...more
This Land is Your Land is a great song picture book for students from Kindergarten to third grade. In fact, I remember singing this song when I was in elementary school. This song picture book talks about the land of America from coast to coast, and how it is for everyone. I think this is a must have in a teachers classroom because it can be used at almost any time. I think it would be great during Thanksgiving for students to learn this song, and sing for parents. As students are learning about...more
We have all heard "This Land is Your Land" around the fourth of July. This composition was written by Woody Guthrie in 1949 and continues to be sung and heard around schools, communities, libraries, stores, etc. to date. The book's illustrations capture the beauty of the American land, from the redwood forests to the gulf stream waters. This book invites the reader to sing along to the words, ask questions about America the beauty, and gain appreciation for our country. If this book is not a par...more
Have you ever heard the song 'This Land Is Your Land?' Well, this book is more like a song book in that it is the entire song with detailed pictures for every lyric (a cd included). Another good book to discuss the hisotry of America, talk about the meaning behind the lyrics, and how it could relate to the current social studies lesson. There is also a biography on the musician who penned this lyrical masterpiece if you want to gloss over what a biography is with your class. I wouldn't recommend...more
This certainly is a wonderful book for both the familiar and not so familiar lyrics from Woody Guthrie's popular folk song. The pictures are fascinating. The tiny messages on some of the pages are engaging. The song's sheet music is included for those who are inclined to play the melody on an instrument. I love this book and would use it for all ages to study the American landscape descriptions, folksongs, Woody Guthrie from his biography included and for the artwork.
We need more books about some of our American heroes of the past century. I'm looking forward to a childrens book about Pete Seeger.
This book is cool because it features some of the verses in the song that are most often left out. It blends contemporary pictures of America with drawings of what it looked like when Woody Guthrie was roaming across the country.

This book has the lyrics to the famous song, plus lyrics I had never heard before.
The illustrations which show scenes from America are very nice...EXCEPT there are lots of little references to Woody Guthrie. An illustration of his wife's dance class??? Illustrations of his concerts??? Good grief. Too much Woodie.

1st-12th. Even though this picture book's audience is aimed toward children, it can easily be apply in upper grades. The book uses the song, this land is our land unraveling the songs hidden verses that are usually ignored. I would use this book, regardless of age, during a contemporary U.S history course.

This is a beautifully illustrated book of the classic song by Woody Guthrie. We enjoyed watching the pages animated to the song as sung by Arlo Guthrie on a Scholastic Storybook Treasures DVD. It included seven other sing-along songs with animations of the illustrated books. Our girls know this song very well as it is sung often (at least once a week) during their morning program at their elementary school.
Stunning representation of one of our great songs. This book seems to have “from sea to shining sea” from cover to cover. The paintings alone make a great companion to US history study, and of course the lyrics confront questions we continually face as a nation. Thorough historical information is included, including a forward from Nora Guthrie, Woody Guthries daughter and a tribute from Pete Seeger. Some editions include a CD. ALA Notable Childrens Books, 1998. Ages 8-10.

We picked this up at the library and we'd love our own copy. Every page is filled with many American landmarks and scenes. I think Wolfie could learn a lot of social studies type information with this book over the years.
