Fisher was a union organizer in New York in the 1920s and 1930s. He grew up in poverty and saw first-hand the class system in the United States. When Franco and the fascist forces in Spain staged the military coup against the Spanish Republic in 1936, Fisher was among the first to volunteer for the International Brigade.
