Amber Salpone thinks in chocolate - talk to her for three minutes and she'll tell you what kind of chocolate you'd be. In fact, most days, if she was asked to choose between chocolate and relationships, there'd be no contest. At least chocolate has never let her down. Unlike her family. Growing up in the Salpone household has taught Amber to avoid conflict and love at all...more

I found this book in the book shop where I work (yes it is quite dangerous to work in a book shop if you like to read).

Amber Salpone is about 30, and she loves films and chocolate. Her best friend Jen is together with Matt, and it was through them she met gorgeous Greg, a player (and a best friend, since three years back) who she constantly has to save from various situations involving women and sex.

But wait! Now Amber's done it too; our story starts the morning after, with her fretting about...more

I LOVED THIS BOOK! It's the first book I've ready by Dorothy Koomson, and I can tell you it will not be my last! This book is going on my keeper shelf.

This book starts off with a bang and then doesn't let you go. I don't want to give too much away but it has one of my favorite premises, which is friends becoming lovers, but Ms.Koomson does it such a way that it's fresh. She also does an amazing job with the characters. Both Amber and Greg have their issues, but it's those issues that have kept t...more

So far this is my least favorite Dorothy Koomson book.
I was very disappointed after ordering (3) of Dorothy's books from UK which are not available in the US, including " The Chocolate Run", "Ice Cream Girls" and "The Cupid Effect". I chose "The Chocolate Run" to read first and it did not set a good tone.

I found the book to be very slow and I did not feel connection to main female character, Amber Salphone as normally feel with Dorothy's novels. Also, I felt her romantic interest and friend Gr...more

I've read books written by this author. My Best Friend's Girl broke my heart. I cried reading it. Koomson can tug your heart with her words.

The story starts with Amber, a next door girl who may be seen here & now, she's a regular just like us, not the polished type, who slept with her friend, Grey, the womaniser. As much as Amber knew it's a mistake, and being a sensible, non-nonsense level headed woman at the brink of 30, she knew that the relationship which had became too close won't lead...more

I'm just not sure what to say in this review, because I'm not sure what I think of the book.

It's good - don't get me wrong, I can appreciate why people enjoyed it - but I didn't particularly like any of the characters, and it wasn't very warm. Again, like 'My Best Friend's Girl', there's no real surprises.

I've given this book two stars because a) I like the writing, b) I like the basic idea of the plot.

What I'm learning from reviewing books, is that I prefer my novels to be the 'discover-and-ove...more

It is not that long ago that I reviewed another Dorothy Koomson title and I did not enjoy that much either. Oh dear! I only read this so quickly after the last one 'The Cupid Effect' as I have promised it to a recently made contact on Bookmooch.

When I discover for me a new author as I did when I read 'My Best Friends's' Girl in 2006, I often add their back catalogue of novels to my wish-list. This is what I did with Dorothy Koomson as I thoroughly enjoyed the first book of hers that I read. As...more

After having recently read The Cupid Effect by British chick-lit author Dorothy Koomson I went online to see what other books she's written and found a lot of positive reviews for The Chocolate Run in particular so I moved it to the top of my to-read list.

For the most part this book reads like an average romance novel; the main character starts falling for her best friend and against her better knowledge she can't stop herself from sleeping with him time and time again. Throw slight confliction...more

Adoro Dorothy Koomson.

Amber Salpone is a 30-something southerner living in Leeds. She has two best friends, Jen, who she has known since University, and Greg who she's known for the past 3 years. Then Greg becomes more than a friend and Jen becomes someone Amber doesn't recognise anymore, but it's ok, Amber counteracts these moments of stress and panic with chocolate.

Initially, this book isn't as much about chocolate as the title would suggest, though. It seems that Koomson realises, then picks it up and runs with i...more

This was a gem of a book.It made me smile, laugh out loud in places and made me think. Amber the main character I loved to pieces and could also relate a lot to her. Loved the double act of her boss Renee and her work mate Martha. Those two were so funny :)Dorothy Koomson writes such brilliant characters that draw you in and care about them. I think Amber was a saint putting up with her so called best friend Jen. Didn't like her at all and thought that she and her boyfriend Matt deserved each ot...more

The Chocolate Run was another of my Borders Wheelock (Singapore) 3 for 2 purchases. With the Aussie dollar doing very well against the Singapore dollar at the time, how could I resist books at cheap prices? (Not to mention that Borders Wheelock is one of my favourite bookstores in the world).

I had never heard of Dorothy Koomson before I saw her books at Borders. It seems that she was quite popular in the UK but hadn’t made it to Australia yet. Funnily enough, when I returned home I found her boo...more

This is the fourth book that I have read by this author and I enjoyed it more than Marshmallows for Breakfast and The Cupid Effect but my favourite is still My Best Friends Girl. This story follows Amber Salpone as she battles with her love life, friends and family. Should she take the ultimate gamble and start dating a friend? The story continuously refers back to chocolate and I will certainly never look at people or chocolate in the same way again. Her office workers provide further amusement...more

Amber finds herself in bed with her best friend Greg. She didn't intend to - the relationship was totally platonic, as far as she was concerned, and Greg is highly promiscuous. But suddenly, attraction strikes. She doesn't know what to do because they spend a lot of time together with another couple... and don't intend to tell them.

I really wasn't sure what to make of this book at first; it seemed like chick-lit at its worst. But the character of Amber - who narrates the book - is very well-dra...more

I really enjoyed this book. Amber was not your typical chick lit heroine - she had depth. Her love interest, Greg, seemed totally sleazy on one level, but there was more to him than I first expected, and I really grew to like him by the end. The supporting characters were just as interesting. Several things that happened along the way totally surprised me, and I wanted to keep reading. :) I've also read Marshmallows for Breakfast by this author, and while I liked that book, I think I liked this...more

Em...more

Jen é professora primár...more

Koomson is one of those authors that feels like a "guilty pleasure". Her books are all "chick lit" but yet underneath the story line have some depth. Once again I devour one of her books.
Amber, the main character, is addicted to chocolate and running. Running away from hard situations, conflict with people, etc that is. She wears trainers but it seems she doesn't use them for the actual physical exercise of running. One of her best mates, Greg, has decided to change up her life and she's not su...more

I admit I read the ending first.

After my last Dorothy Koomson book Goodnight, Beautiful, I really wanted to read more work by the author but I did not think I could handle another emotional ringer like that book was. So I deliberately looked to find something that was much lighter. With this book I can see why she is classified as a chick-lit writer because this is pure chick-lit.

Amber has been best friend with Jen for just about ever. So when Jen invites Amber to meet the new man in her life A...more

Amber is a young lady with problems. She is an emotional doormat for her best female friend, and an emotional mess with regards to her best male friend.

Amber's character is steadily revealed as the story progresses; she certainly doesn't do herself any favours with her acquired coping skills, but I suppose that is what makes the story tick along.

I don't understand the comparisons with chocolates - it just doesn't seem to work. It's as if the author has popped the comparisons in just to make sen...more

The book was going to be one of those books where chocolate was the main aspect of the protagonists life hehe ;))All in all this is well written and very enjoyable book. As I read it I was amused, I was moved and I was always entertained! It's definitely a book I would recommend if you enjoy reading about people and their relationships.
Sometimes when i'm reading this book, i think it writes about me, yes, ME!!!! oh, her thinking, it's my thinking too ^_^ hehe

I really loved this book. With the pastel cover I really expected it to be quite light and girly, but it's not at all, it's very emotionally charged and incredibly deep. I like the way Koomson plays with time, shifting back and forward, something she uses in her other books too. This is a book about normal people dealing with real problems, sometimes light, sometimes incredibly sad and frustrating. I loved it.

I really don't like books where friends scheme again each other. It was super obvious from the beginning, that her friends use her and treat her like rubbish. I don't undestand why such books are popular! But I have to give credit that her boyfriend was devoted and it was pretty hot. It was interesting how it was so twisted and because i had started reading, i had to complete it. However, when i think of the time spent on it, i dont think it was worth it. No offense, Dorothy, this just isnt my t...more

hw first 70 pages or do was bland for me. Nothing much seems to happen. Things seems to center solely around amber and greg

However it got better after that. A couple of issues came in such as best friend vs boyfriend, parents n kids relationship, bestfriends and stuffs like that. It was interesting to read how mature Greg is and how insecured amber was.

Quite fun and interesting to read this story, eventhough well...well, i'm finished read it in a month! Geez, what a record to read shallow chiclit novel within a month. Well, because its written in english, i have to open my dictionary -__-"

The story,
well...common, a girl who doesn't believe in commitment finally falls for her 'best friend' who's well known as a don juan and basically same with her, commitmentphobic.

The plot quite slowly and boring in the middle, but overall good enough lah diba...more

Chick-lit doesn't appeal to me, and this example hasn't changed my mind. I only finished it because I'm in-transit, and needed to kill a couple of hours. It's probably not a bad book. I imagine it would make a screenplay for one of those feather-light British romantic comedies, with a US starlet in the lead. I'd recomend you wait for the movie.

STILL LAUGHING OUT LOUD. I LOVE THIS BOOK. I LOVE CHOCOLATE. AND YES I LOVE THIS BOOK. WAIT I'VE SAID THAT ALREADY. BUT WHATEVER, I DO, I REALLY DO!

REMINDS ME THAT I WAS NO VICTIM IN THIS. WHEN YOU DONT SPEAK UP FOR YOURSELF, HOW DO YOU EXPECT PEOPLE TO KNOW HOW TO TREAT YOU? IT WAS NOT SPEAKING UP THAT GOT ME INTO THIS.

NO MATTER HOW YOU WANT EVERYONE TO LOVE YOU, YOU SIMPLY CANNOT DO THAT BECAUSE:
1. IT IS NOT HUMANELY POSSIBLE
2. YOU WILL NEVER BE HAPPY BECAUSE YOU WILL NEVER BE ABLE TO TRULY...more

This was, quite frankly, very disappointing. The plot was pretty much non-existent and it showed no sign of changing so, 3/4's of the way through, I gave up and skipped straight to the end where it didn't even finish how I wanted it to!!! I really hope this was just an exeception because the other Dorothy Koomson's books I have read were so so so much better than this!

Hello, my name's Dorothy Koomson and I'll try to make this bit that's all about me as interesting as possible.
I wrote my first novel called There's A Thin Line Between Love And Hate when I was 13. I used to write a chapter every night then pass it around to my fellow convent school pupils every morning, and they seemed to love it.

I grew up in London and then grew up again in Leeds when I went to u...more

“I never trusted any man not to find someone else; to stay with me if he had another option. to not find something in me that would have him heading for the hills. that was the other reason for not thinking long-term- when someone walked out, as they invairiably did, it wasn't too big a shock. a disappointment but nothing, I hadn't been expecting.” 19 people liked it
