When I discover for me a new author as I did when I read My Best Friends's Girl in 2006, I often add their back catalogue of novels to my wish-list. Ceri, a personagem principal, tem uma vida estável em Londres, onde é responsável por uma secção de moda de uma revista. Apesar de ter uma licenciatura em psicologia tirada em Leeds, não se sente feliz, nada mesmo, porque toda a gente tem a tendência para lhe contar os seus segredos mais escabrosos. Até os possíveis namorados, em vez de a bajularem nos encontros amorosos, acabam sempre a desabafar com ela os seus males e angústias, lá se indo todo o romantismo que ela esperava, pelo que a sua vida amorosa é um caos infinito. Ou será melhor dizer um enorme deserto? Sim, porque miragens vão surgindo, não passam é disso.
Assim sendo, num dia em que ficou em casa, ao assistir ao programa da Oprah, decide seguir o seu conselho e mudar de vida, seguir o seu sonho. Larga tudo para voltar a Leeds, onde pretende continuar a investigar na área da psicologia e dar também umas aulas.
Aí tudo vai acontecer: os seus dois colegas de casa são seres estranhos, obviamente, mas divertidos e que gostam muito dela; a sua maldição prontamente regressa, ao voltar a ouvir os desabafos alheios, ver-se a fazer de cupido, sem que seja o teu intuito. E o pior é que volta o que ela identifica como percepção extra-sensorial: sentir no seu próprio corpo as emoções dos que a rodeiam. Por exemplo, quando entra no elevador, sente o intenso enjoo matinal de uma colega que estará grávida mas está a querer manter segredo; ri-se incontrolavelmente no banco até ter de sair, porque a pessoa da frente estava imensamente feliz; chorar copiosamente até o colega que estava sentado ao seu lado sair… Sentimentos que passam logo que as pessoas se afastam e os levam consigo. Para além de tudo isto, Ceri é apaixonadíssima pelo Angel, o vampiro de 250 anos, ex-namorado da Buffy, ao ponto de, na sua casa de Londres, ter um poster dele emoldurado por cima da lareira, no lugar central da sala! Mas será que ela consegue "caçar" o Angel? Há quem lhe aponte mais o Bosley (personagem do filme "Os Anjos de Charlie" que está sempre rodeado das beldades mas que nunca se envolve com nenhuma). Conseguirá ela, finalmente, ter sorte no amor? Com o Angel ou com o Bosley? Com os dois ou com nenhum?
Tudo isto, e muito mais, é narrado numa escrita leve e fluída, que nos cativa desde a primeira página e nos conduz por uma imensidão de sentimentos. A Cenci facilmente nos entra no coração e rapidamente nos conseguimos identificar com muitas coisas dela. Afinal, não seremos todos um pouco loucos? E não será isso bom? Não será isso que dá cor à vida?
Depois de ter lido os livros anteriores editados cá por Portugal, atrevo-me a dizer que este nada tem a ver com os anteriores, tendo um registo muito mais alegre, comparável aos livros da Jill Mansell, mas com o toque da Dorothy Koomson do "A filha da minha melhor amiga" no seu melhor. Como o Adrian Mole, podemos dizer que este livro é posterior aos anos amargos da Dorothy Koomson, ou anterior, se considerarmos a sequência temporal em que foram escritos. Sem dúvida, um livro a não perder! Venha divertir-se com a Ceri, vai ver que ela lhe proporcionará excelentes momentos e, no final, irá ficar com vontade de mais!(less)

I swear, I would NEVER again read this book in public. I must have turned tomato red more than half a dozen time just trying to get through the book. Don't get me wrong, the book was fairly entertaining. It's the fact there was a lot of swearing and barely any sense of decency in it that embarrassed me. I mean, how do you read a book where it mentioned the word "Orgasm" (with the exception of a Medical Journal, thank you very much) in its chapter title? This was Dorothy Koomson's first published book. And although the dialogue doesn't flow as nicely as her other books, the story told in The Cupid Effect is really wonderful and unique. There a large handful of intriguing characters and the main character is easy to love. And, luckily, this one won't make you cry like some of Koomson's other novels. The setting of this story is a university...a world I know well since I'm an academic and all.

Koomson made me laugh with this one. I'd to scuffle my gag. Ceri is the person who seemed to be the counsellor, someone can tell her their problems within blinks of eyes. The problems that they poured maybe the problems that are common, but Koomson offer the other side of Ceri, who wanted to seek the best for herself and being tired with the emotional burden that she carries of others. Bem vistas as coisas, é injusto. Porque é que tem que ser ela a envolver-se na vida dos outros e a resolver-lhes os problemas. Ela só quer ser feliz, deliciar-se com os seus programas de televisão favoritos e encontrar o amor da sua vida...
Porque é que ela não pode simplesmente ser normal?

Não é segredo nenhum que Dorothy Koomson se tornou rapidamente uma das minhas autoras preferidas. Conquistou-me com a sua escrita, com os seus romances, com o seu humor e sobretudo, com a sua sensibilidade. A autora consegue sempre captar a atenção do leitor, por estas serem tão reais. Várias me relaciono com os protagonistas, porque penso que a mesma coisa poderia facilmente acontecer na vida real de cada um de nós. Todos nós sabemos que as relações humanas nem sempre são fáceis e ninguém tem um manual de instruções para tornar estas relações mais simples. E a autora descreve todos os sentimentos humanos com muita perspicácia, clareza e de forma muito acertada.
Os seus protagonistas são simples mortais, mas acabam por se tornar especiais à mesma, por causa da sua personalidade e da sua condição humana. Sentem, erram, magoam, sofrem, riem. E andam todos à procura do mesmo: da felicidade e do amor.

Apesar de ter lido variadas opiniões sobre este livro, que era mais fraco do que outros, mais uma vez não me relacionei com as críticas. Está a começar tornar-se difícil arranjar um livro dela que eu possa dizer que gostei claramente menos, porque todos me conseguem conquistar de alguma forma e apesar de existir alguns pormenores que no momento da leitura, mudaria, depois de os ler, já o faria. Porque seria mudar a essência dos livros, tal como eles se apresentam aos leitores e isso faria com o que o livro perdesse a capacidade de encantar.
Por isso mesmo é que a autora se insinuou de forma tão premente nas minhas preferências. Existe sempre algo que irremediavelmente me chama à atenção nos livros dela, me toca fundo e que não deixa indiferente. Este O Amor Está no Ar não foi nenhuma excepção.
É um livro num registo diferente daquele que a autora nos tem habituado, contudo. Foca várias personagens com muita atenção, em vez de dar atenção (quase) exclusiva ao protagonista. Acabamos por conhecer intimamente a vida de vários personagens, além da da protagonista.

Achei um livro muito divertido, as personagens bem construídas e exploradas, com excepção da Gwen, que a meu ver foi a personagem que menos explorada foi e durante todo o livro foi descrita de uma forma injusta. Adorei este registo diferente, porque em vez de a autora se focar apenas na resolução de problemas da vida de Ceri, mostrou-nos também a vida dos outros personagens e mostrou-nos igualmente que eles próprios também conseguiram resolver os problemas das suas vidas.
Temos vários romances a decorrer e uma experiência muito divertida acompanhá-los a todos em paralelo.
Contudo, o que me deixou completamente fascinada por este livro, foi o final. Foi perfeito. Perfeito e que deixa a nossa imaginação a voar e a sonhar com as possibilidades felizes que este final nos traz.
A autora deu um golpe final de mestre.

Deixou-vos curiosos? Se não, devia. Porque este livro é uma mistura de risos, amizade, mas mais importante, sobre o amor e sobre seguir os desejos do coração. (less)

Decidi fazer as pazes com a autora mas acho que este livro não foi uma boa escolha! Ceri D'Altroy é supostamente uma pessoa fora do comum, isto é com uma simples conversa consegue mudar o rumo de vida das pessoas, ela aconselha os amigos e consegue estranhamente fazer o mesmo com todos os estranhos com quem se cruza, ela tem uma suposta influencia positiva na vida dos outros mas ao fazê-lo acaba por ser incompreendida e infeliz porque não consegue fazer as mesmas escolhas para ela. I couldn't put this book down, it was one of those books where you end up hating everyday life for getting in the way of you finishing it sooner.

I read the first 140 or so pages in less than 2 days, and then I started running out of time to finish it.

I have read 2 other books by the author and thought they were fantastic, hence me reading this one. I was left very disappointed. The characters were not believable and the storyline was very predictable. I did finish the book but found that I didn't really care what happened to the characters at all. Maybe it is because I am comparing this to My Best Friends Girl which was fantastic, that I am disappointed. I am now reading The Chocolate Run so I shall see how I get on with that one....

Oh man. Oh man oh man oh man. This woman can write. Great story, great characters... oh man.

The first thing I notice in every Dorothy Koomson book is that her characters start out completely whole - they are real people with personality. The main character, Ceri, is no exception here. By page six I wanted to be her best friend. Or I just wanted to be her.

Enjoyed this - what first grabbed me was that it's set in Leeds and after living there at Uni it brought back a lot of memories of student life around Burley and Headingley!! Back to my youth! The premise of the main character being an unwitting "cupid" could have been really cringe-y, but overall was well done. the main character was well written and likeable, the supporting characters engaging but a little sketchy in places.
Overall a pleasant read.

Giving this a very average review as I thought the story was pretty average. It's a shame really, because I loved the character and the premise sounded like a good story idea, but it was just a little long and bland. There were some very funny, laugh-out-loud moments though and plenty of times I could empathise with the heroine.

Not a waste of time, but I'm looking forward to reading the later releases written by this talented author.

The story of a woman who leaves behind her life in London to start again as a mature student in Leeds, this book started out as something quite ordinary and ended as something really quite special. Captured the student life from the perspective of someone returning to it perfectly.

The Cupid Effect reads as as a Sophie Kinsella novel; a chick-lit set in England with a flawed but easily loveable heroine. It's for the most part not an extraordinary or original story but it's a nice book to read on a sunny afternoon when it's too hot out to do much else. Plus it has a memorable twist towards the end explaining all the (not so) subtle hints we've been given throughout the book.

Koomson at her best. I enjoyed this book about a young woman who seems to conjure up romance in everyone she meets but can't find it in her own life. This is a very polished book and I was surprised to find it in Koomson's first published novel.

This was for me the best book because it affected me emotionally, I saw myself in this book if you like. The pursuit of who one is, find 'your heart's true desire' as Koomson puts it, is an inspiration to go and find what you are looking for.

Ceri quits her job in journalism to follow her heart's desire lecturing in psychology. She also hopes to leave behind her habit of getting involved in people's lives and apparently messing them up.. only to find that in Leeds, where she moves, it's impossible to avoid commitment.

This is Dorothy Koomson's first book and it is quite different from her later books which I have read before. A much more humorous book, I found it very easy to read and the main character very amusing at times. However, I didn't like the slightly 'supernatural' quality to the way she experienced what others were feeling and I also found some of the grammar quite poor - for example, repeated use of 'I was sat' rather than 'I was sitting' etc. Still, I enjoyed the book, it made me laugh a few tim...more

I love Ceri she reminded me so much of myself!!! I like everything about this book .....even at the last page that "one" word had me giggling like mad.....I love this book ...such a happy go lucky and funny book to read :)
