This was an impulse pick up at the library yesterday as I stocked up for the long Thanksgiving weekend. A good collection of two "important" story-lines that I had never read.

The deaths of Captain John Stacy and his daughter, Gwen, as well as the Green Goblin, are cited as a major turning point in Spider-man's character development and in comic books in general. I can see why.

While dated in its storytelling, art and writing, there are themes here that transc...more

It took me a while to get past the seriously obnoxious commentary in the intro to this book -- Gerry Conway whines about how boring Gwen was, and basically takes credit for anybody being interested in her right now, saying it's only because he decided to kill her --

But once I was done rolling my eyes, I read this and it really is an indisputably great comics story (or, rather, two stories since the first part is a Stan Lee-written Doctor Octopus arc which includes the death of Peter...more

Of these two Stacy deaths, it was Gwen's which still manages to create ripples even today in Spider-Man's life. And to think that writer Gerry Conway killed her off because he thought she was boring. Which is true. Gwen Stacy is only interesting after her death...the entire clone saga mess was because of her death and a madman's obsession for revenge. The issues that featured her kidnap and death was also important from a historical perspective because Stan Lee decided to forego the self imposed...more

Obviously these stories are dated and don't hold up to the literary standards of today's comics. But the emotional punch they pack is undeniable and the shadow they cast is still felt today. The tragedy presented here is downright Shakespearean and goes a long way toward establishing Spider-Man as the finest fictional character ever created.

Two of the most powerful Spidey stories of the day, brought to life by John Romita's utterly fantastic art.
My copy signed by John is one of my most prized posessions.

It was pretty good. Dated, but good. Didn't realize that Romita was inking most of these issues and not pencilling.
