Joseph. Every Christian knows the name. We know who he was, but what do we really know abut him? For most of us, the answer is Not Much. Now, in these highly intimate, insightful, easy-to-read meditations, the late, noted Scripture scholar Fr. Richard Gilsdorf investigates the New Testament's most mysterious figure. In doing so, he opens up for us the Church's greatest ...more

#19 - 2010.

The book description leans heavily on "easy to read meditations," "like going on retreat," "warm and contemplative" and so forth. None of which prepared me for the sharp, discerning mind that Father Gilsdorf brings to bear on what we know about Joseph both through what is said and unsaid in scripture. I didn't pick the book because I expected it to be simple but because I like Saint Joseph and go to him for my husband and also for us as a couple.

This book is unusual in many ways, one

Fr. Gilsdorf is not an "easy read" but he is very informative. This is an excellent opportunity to learn more about St. Joseph than just what is said in the Gospels. What Father does, is to use the tradition within the Church, and logical extractions from what we do know from the Gospel, to help us understand the role of St. Joseph in the life of Jesus. Further extrapolation goes from the role of St. Joseph in the life of Jesus, to the role of St. Joseph in the Church, and the role of St. Joseph ...more

This book was interesting. I felt as though I did learn a lot about St. Joseph that I never had a clue about and gained a new way of thinking about him. However, it was difficult to read. It kept making references to other books and writings that tell about St. Joseph as if we had most certainly done our research ahead of time and knew to what the author was referring! I certainly appreciate what I learned but am not certain I would recommend it unless one already knows about Our Lord's earthly ...more

A book which draws together what we know about St Joseph (his ancestry, the events of his life and his attitude toward them) in order that we may know him better, learn from him and seek his intercession, which will nourish our spiritual life and relationship with God.

It includes references to other spiritual writers including Frederico Suarez's Joseph of Nazareth and Pope Benedict XVI's homily on St Joseph.

It was a decent introduction but lacked depth. It could be that the author's message didn't resonate with me.

The book details the importance of Joseph, albeit in general terms. It is set up as a study guide with questions at the end of each chapter. This is a great idea for meditations but lacks if one desires to enhance their learning with scholarly approach.

Not exactly the book it was promoted to be. I was looking for the "highly intimate, insightful, easy-to-read meditations" that were advertised. I didn't perceive the chapters to be meditations and the study questions at the end of each chapter could have been more thought-provoking. About a quarter of the book is testimonials, acknowledgements, dedications, endnotes and appendixes.
