I read this immediately after putting down Jane Austen Ruined My LIfe. And by that, I mean literally immediately. I read both books at a water park while my boys were enjoying the rides. Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart has much less to do with the protectors of Jane Austen's secrets and more to do with the main character of Claire. Claire feels like her life is dull and going nowhere. She feels unappreciated and overlooked. Heading to Oxford as a favor to her sister, she finds herself caught up in an More...

Unemployed Claire Prescott heads to England to take her sister's place at a Jane Austen seminar, where she will also present her sister's paper. Claire feels out of place at Oxford until she's approached by kind, elderly Harriet Dalrymple, who claims to be in possession of a partial manuscript of First Impressions, an early, unpublished, and thought to be lost forever version of Pride and Prejudice. When Harriet shows the manuscript to Claire bit by bit, Claire is surprised to find a different l More...

This was a shameless guilty pleasure that I grabbed off the display shelf on the way to check out in the library. Its always embarrassing to pick up a book that has a heart romance sticker on the spine. But it was a good quick read, I enjoyed this Jane Austen spoof more than the other few I've read. Its of course about a girl who comes across her own Mr. Darcy in her life. I guess you could guess what happened by the title, which might be one of the reason I enjoyed this book. I enjoy Pride More...

Claire Prescott found herself at a crossroads. Ever since the death of her parents, she had been taking care of her little sister. Long after her sister finished her education, got married, and had children, Claire continued to give without thinking about her own life. Somewhere along the line, Claire had forgotten to live. Now out of work, no college education, and a relationship that was stuck, Claire didn’t really know what to do.

Doing yet another favor for her sister, Claire agr More...

On her own and taking care of her little sister from the age of 18, Claire Prescott has never been one to believe in fairy tales. Yet when she has to present a paper at a Pride and Prejudice seminar as an emergency substitution for her sister, Claire finds her self caught up in the beauty of Oxford. And when handsome and aristocratic James walks into the room she feels an immediate spark. She slowly begins to think that for once the fairy tale can be hers... if she can overlook the fact that she More...

The best thing that can be said about this book is that--for some reason--I kept turning the pages and didn't want to put it down, even though I wasn't necessarily enjoying it. It annoyed me more than it entertained me.

The characters were grossly underdeveloped...especially James (the Mr. Darcy wannabe). The (underdeveloped) characters then fall in love...without spending actual time together, without hardly speaking to each other??? And who did not see this coming: The New Yor More...

I loved Pride and Prejudice and the previous book from Pattillo, Jane Austen Ruined My Life, has been on my radar for ages so I jumped at the chance to read this book. I felt like it had a lot of potential but it just needed to be more fully developed. When I first started reading I did not understand why Claire immediately fell for her classmate and felt like he was a potential love interest. Yes he was good looking but they didn't exchange more than a few words and already she's off in a t More...

I must be the only bibliophile out there who has never read anything by Jane Austen. I've read enough about her to know that Mr. Darcy was one of her romantic heroes but before I read this book I couldn't have told you in which of her books he appeared, or whether he was a good guy or a bad guy. When Phenix & Phenix offered me a complimentary review copy, I accepted because I recognized the author's name and really enjoyed her Sweetgum books, not because I was a huge Austen fan who could hardl More...

Ah! Such a great book. I love Jane Austen and her works, but my favorite is probably Pride and Prejudice. It's such a great story, and I feel like I can find something new every time I read it. Apparently, I"m not the only one that feels this way, because there are several Pride and Prejudice remakes, sequels, prequels and re-tellings. Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart is none of these.

Let me explain. Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart tells the story of Claire, who goes to England for a Jane Au More...

Claire Prescott is in Oxford, England filling in for her sister at a Jane Austen seminar. Claire has taken care of her sister Missy since she(Claire) was 18 years old. Claire has put her life on hold in order to please the people around her. Her week at the seminar studying Pride and Prejudice causes Claire to reflect on where her life is going.

Claire has left her boyfriend Neil at home in America. Their relationship is casual and she feels neglected as his life is consumed by sports. More...

Claire Prescott takes her sister's place at "Pride & Prejudice" seminar in Oxford. Once there she meets James (a wealthy book editor from Manhattan) and Harriet (an eccentric, old woman with a secret about Jane Austen she feels compelled to share with Claire). Over the course of a week, Claire must decide what to do about her life. She's lost her job, her boyfriend is not exactly the romantic "sweep you off of your feet" type, etc.

I liked Claire well enough. I More...

Claire Prescott travels from the US to Oxford university for a Pride and Prejudice Summer School. She's taking the place of her Austenophile sister who is unable to travel, but she's probably not the best person to do so as she has only a sketchy knowledge of the author and her books.
Claire is having a difficult life, she's brought up her sister, Missy, by herself after the death of her parents, has just lost a fairly mediocre job and has a nice, but inattentive and dull boyfriend.

This book was on the new fiction table at Barnes and Noble and caught my eye because of the cover. Silly, I know. I am trying to get through Les Miserables right now and I needed a little silliness. I was actually surprised with how smart some of the commentary in the book was. The plot was a tad on the ridiculous side...I mean, the lost manuscript of First Impressions (Pride & Prejudice)? Mr. Darcy wasn't intended to be the hero he has become. But if you can ignore all that and just take it as More...

Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart offers a creative modern spin on Jane Austen's work. I enjoyed the parts of the story about the early version of Pride and Prejudice even though it didn't read like Jane Austen's typical writing. In this version of the story, Mr. Bennet has already died so it changes the circumstances of the Bennet family. We get to see most of the main characters from the original, including Lady Catherine de Burgh but there are some marked differences in the plot. I wished I could have More...

Sparkling, engaging and subtly humorous, Janeites and romance readers will be enchanted!

I have read a few Austenesque books in my day. Am I jaded? Hope not. I usually know by the end of the third chapter if it has wings: a fresh concept skillfully rendered, Austen allusions or her characters reverently portrayed and humor in the form of wit and irony, please. I know. It’s a tall order. I’m fastidious. But occasionally, and more frequently as of late, “every feature works.” Mr. Darcy More...

I liked that all the characters in this book are real. They have many imperfections, just like the rest of us, and noone is painted to be a perfect hero or heroine.
I went back and forth throughout the story as to who Claire should be with, but I was happy with her final choice. I do wish there were more details about the characters, though. We really don’t learn a whole lot about any of them.

I liked this book more than I thought I would when I started it. I did have an issue with something though...it's minor but still annoying...the main character is supposed to be from Kansas City. It's never stated Missouri or Kansas. I know most non-mid-westerners don't know there are two. A certain character states (not naming names so I don't have to mark this as a spoiler) says they have decided to go to KU. First off KU is in Lawrence, Kansas...not Kansas City, Kansas. Also it's a pretty com More...

This was my first attempt reading a Jane Austen inspired book. It didn't go well.
Claire is suppose to be a strong woman whose family needs her help all the time but we do not see any strength in her actions during the events told in the novel.
The two men are no better. The one compared to Mr. Darcy does not have anything in common with him in truth: Mr. Darcy was proud of his moral integrity, this man not. The other one instead neglects his girlfriend because she is too dedicated to he More...

This was a cute read. It wasn't quite what I expected and took me a little whle to get into it, but I enjoyed it in the end. Claire takes her sister's place at a week-long seminar about Pride and Prejudice at Oxford. There she meets a dashing, wealthy man who sweeps her off her feet. In the back of her mind is guilt about the boyfriend she left at home, although she doubts he even noticed that she left. She is befriended by an elderly lady who has a first draft of Austen's Pride and Prejudice an More...

I am hopelessly addicted to all things Austen, and while this wasn't the best spin-off that I've ever read, it was still a very good book for me! I loved the idea of attending an Austen seminar for a week at Oxford, no less. For some reason I really understood Claire and her need to take care of everyone but herself. I was also drawn into the idea of there being an unpublished copy of First Impressions. Wouldn't that be beyond belief if you were to hold a copy of that in your very own hands, kno More...

It was like reading two books in one.
In the first one , set in our times, Claire Prescott needs a break from her ordinary disappointing routine in Kansas City.
“For more than thirty years, I’d always been exactly who people needed me to be. A dutiful daughter. An even more dutiful big sister. A hard worker … A devoted aunt to my twin nieces”. (p. 6)

Honestly, I have to admit up front, I am not a huge Jane Austen fan. I haven’t read any of her books and haven’t really felt a desire to. After I accepted this book, I wasn’t really sure I would enjoy it – my only exposure to Austen’s work was the Kiera Knightly Pride & Prejudice film. I am happy to admit that I really enjoyed this book and found myself interested in reading the actual Pride & Prejudice book.

One of the interesting aspects of this story was the premise that Claire fin More...

Mr. Darcy Broke My Heart is a short novel but not entirely light reading. Claire faces some hard truths about her own life while caught in an unexpected romance and a bit of a mystery. The mystery bit of the novel captured most of my attention, although I'm not sure it is supposed to be the focus. Are the pages Claire is given to read really a lost first draft of Jane Austen's novel?

I found the novel to be a bit choppy, with transitions between story lines taking large jumps. Whi More...

First of all, the ending did not do it for me. We don't know enough about Neil really to believe that he will change, let alone to be happy that they worked things out.

This story had a lot of potential, but I just don't think it lived up to it. I will read anything Austen-related, but this was a disappointment. If it was unrelated to Austen altogether I fear I would have had to give it a much lower mark.

I did have trouble putting it down at times, but I think it was most More...

It seemed like the perfect time to read MR. DARCY BROKE MY HEART since I am currently re-reading PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, perhaps for the fifteeth time, but this time for a class. I had recently just borrowed the film as well- the one starring Keira Knightley- and fell in love with this adaptation all over again. Although I haven't had a chance to read the other Jane Austen novels yet, I've been an avid fan since I first read a children's adaptation of the novel.

I read "Jane Austen Ruined My Life" before I read this book. In it we are introduced to a group called "the Formidables" which was set up by Jane Austen's sister Cassandra after Jane's death, to act as guardians of Jane's letters and manuscripts. While this group is not the entire plot of the book, they are involved very closely to the main charicters in both novels. While "Jane Austen Ruined My Life" dealt with the concept of the exsistance of Jane Austen's "l More...
