Rane Arroyo's work is funny, quirky and touching. It lacks the pretentiousness of some University poets who try too hard to be deep. Not to say Arroyo is not meaningful. On the contrary it's that he presents serious subject matter mixed with a lighthearted demeanor that it evokes real life. I wouldn't have expected to enjoy the work of someone so different than myself, which speaks even more to his talent.

I love the concept of Ponce de Leon's ghost entering these poems and wrestling with the poet for control, but the result is pedantic and superficial, self-consciously ironic.
