"It must be nice," mused Ford Prefect thoughtfully, "to know what you're for. I don't have the slightest idea what I'm for. Most sentient beings don't. But you," he continued, turning to Arthur and Trillian. "You know. Part of finding the answer to the Ultimate Question. I'm sure that's comforting at times. "

"You mean the 42 business?" asked Arthur.

"What?" asked Zaphod's left head incredulously, while his right head rolled its eyes. "You mean you fell for that?!"

"But..." stammered Arthur. "I me...more

The universe is a joke.

Even before I was shown the meaning of life in a dream at 17 (then promptly forgot it because I thought I smelled pancakes), I knew this to be true--and yet, I have always felt a need to search for the truth, that nebulous, ill-treated creature. Adams has always been, to me, to be a welcome companion in that journey.

Between the search for meaning and the recognition that it's all a joke in poor taste lies Douglas Adams, and, luckily for us, he doesn't seem to mind if you...more

Very entertaining sequel to The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. In this book, our heroes...I don't really know how to even begin to summarize the plot. Our heroes are on a quest to get something to eat which leads to adventures through time and space and parallel dimensions and a trip to visit the man who runs the universe. I have always thought that the Hitchhiker books get progressively weirder and weirder. Bear in mind that the first book features pan-dimensional superintelligent mice, so t...more

Better than the first book. This has more funny moments and I just found myself laughing out loud more than when I was reading the first book. I guess it was by design. Douglas Adams had to explain fully his milieu for the series. Since he did that in the first book, his characters now have the whole universe to play around for themselves. So, they just don't hop and hop from one planet to another but also in this one, enjoy a time travel. They went to a restaurant at the end of the universe. Pr...more

Hitchhiker's, volume 2.

The beginning of human life on earth and the end of the universe, aided by infinite improbability.

As with the others, it's the ideas and writing that make it so good:

Marvin makes a heavily armoured tank guess what weapon he has (nothing).

"The guide is definitive. Reality is frequently inaccurate".

"How are you? Fine if you like being me, which personally, I don't".

"Everything's cool and froody".

"Little expense had been spared to give the impression that no expense had...more

laughter is universal. Surprises are not boring, like the galaxy we are in and the next one beside ours and those little rocks that like to orbit our world. there is so much out there, Adam's imagination is complex, in a beautiful way, you'll just have to hate yourself if you do not try to read it and find it out for yourself.

The world was supposed to end last December 21, 2012. Oh, let's just say it did. The molten core of the earth suddenly felt like belching out to the surface killing all of...more

This book is based on the fact that Zaphod Beeblebrox is looking for the ruler of the Universe to fulfill a plan that he doesn't even know he had because he had part of his memory removed. Part of the problem is, though, only three people know he exists and even they don't know where he is. Another problem is is that the ship he and his companions' ship is not working because Arthur Dent made it try to figure out how to make tea. All of this leads to another random adventure where anything can h...more

Back in junior high school, when I was being bussed 30 miles each way to the Magnet School for Gifted Math and Science Students (don't get excited; I washed out of the program in shame and disgrace after two years), the Hitchhiker's Guide series were all my nerdy friends' favorite books. They would throw quotes and in-jokes about Pan-Galactic Gargleblasters and Ravenous Bugblatter Beasts of Kraal back and forth at each other much like some (annoying) people like to do with Monty Python films or...more

In reading this I was worried that Douglas Adams may not live up to the first amazing book of this series, but he did, and more.

I am in awe of how Adams works language. It's just a joy to read. I didn't stop laughing nearly the entire time reading this. So many random moments like lifts that talk back, mistakes with contraception and time machines and other random, random things.

The ending just kinda fizzled off and left me wanting to know what happens next - not so much a cliff hanger but defin...more

Oh, how I do love Douglas Adams.

I find something really profound in the way Douglas Adams presents life, even through an otherwise nonsensical and just purely humorous book. When I look past the surface, some of life's most thought-provoking themes lie so clearly woven amidst his stories.

Each encounter, each adventure, each beloved character, each twist, each turn; these are all humorous, superbly written, and wonderful, but what I believe Adams does better than his other counter-parts is lace...more

The Restaurant at the End of the Universe is a clear continuation of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The tale picks up exactly where the first volume in Douglas Adams's 'trilogy of five' leaves off, following a confused and bewildered Arthur Dent. Yes, the last survivor of the destruction of Earth, floating through the cosmos following the destruction of his home planet to make way for an interstellar bypass is just a little out of sorts. He just wants a cup of tea, and things just sort of go...more

An epic creation that takes science-fiction to a whole new level and which is destined to become a classic

For anyone interested in science-fiction, Douglas Adams ‘Hitch-hiker’s guide to the galaxy’ is indispensable reading, as too are those books within the series that follow. He is an author who defines sci-fi, with a uniquely identifiable style and out-of-this world concepts that continue to dazzle and amaze. This is the book that everyone is talking about across galaxies. This is the stuff o...more

I picked it up this morning and I finished it 7 hours later. I just didn't want to let it go. Too much fun, I suppose.

It's so funny that I still laugh at childish jokes that don't even make that much sense! I thought I was smarter than that, but if I'm not, I'm happy. This is definitely a series to read, it's just too much to miss out on!

As the second book of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, The Restaurant at the End of Universe picks Arthur Dent up from where he was, in the middle of a c...more

Awesome book. It's just as good as The Hitchiker's guide, and I'd recommend it to anyone who enjoyed the first one or likes sci-fi and humor.
It starts off with the Vogons trying to anhilliate Zaphod's crew and the Heart of Gold while the ship is occupied with trying to make tea per Arthur's request. They escape, and Zaphod finds himself once again trying to evade the police. (view spoiler)[ He encounters Zarniwoop, who is to help him with the next step of his intentionally forgotten plan.In an e...more

In this book, Douglas Adams really opens up the series to a new level.

The plot begins at the ending of the first book, when Arthur, Ford, Marvin, and Zaphod are on a ship in space. Zaphod controls the ship to make it arrive at the restaurant at the end of the universe, This restaurant has caused Arthur, Ford, and Zaphod to steal a space ship that has turned its autopilot on to run into the sun. The Ship then crashes into the sun, but all but Marvin escape from the ship. This leaves Marvin in the...more

When I read the Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, there was a feeling of relief because so many people like it, and I had liked it too! Once that was out the way, many said I had to read on to the Restaurant at the End of the Universe because it was even better. Thus the pressure was right back on again.

Thankfully, I enjoyed the whole restaurant business just as much as the first. It felt a lot easier to read, presumably because the characters are all embedded in my mind now, and finding a two-h...more

Book Two of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series is easily as funny, if not funnier, than the first. Somehow, it's able to squeeze in jokes nearly every other sentence, frequent word play, likeable characters, and plot.

The story follows Arthur Dent, Ford Prefect, Zaphod Beeblebrox, Trillian, and Marvin the depressed robot on their search for the question to the answer of life. The part of Zaphod's brain previously blocked to him starts to push through, and leads them on a quest to find th

This was a most excellent second novel in what is a weird and intriguing series. I don't know how many fans who are not into sci-fi enjoy this series but I do know it is a must read if you appreciate sci-fi and humour.

Douglas Adams has this way of using Deus ex Machina to produce profound humorous effects. It makes his work rather bizarre and zany but it is all the more endearing for that. Because without all the quirky, silly comedy, the flippant lines, the weird and random happenings his work...more

When last seen in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy our intrepid heroes were zipping across space in a desperate attempt to evade the various groups hoping to imprison, torture, and/or kill them. Seems like a strange time to get the munchies, doesn’t it? But anything goes in a Douglas Adams story, so the gang decides to pop into the restaurant at the end of the universe--literally--for a quick nibble. But--surprise!--things soon go awry, and before you can say, "Don't panic," Zaphod and Trill...more

My book review is on “The Restaurant at The End of The Universe”. This book is the sequel to “The Hitchhiker’s Guide to The Galaxy”. It is about aliens blowing up the Earth. One guy escapes on a spaceship with a robot with a depressive OS and the president of the galaxy, except he isn’t the president anymore because he stole a spaceship which was the one the guy, named Arthur, is on. All the ex president wants to do is find a place to eat. But Arthur wants coffee. When he tells the ship to make...more

Douglas Adams is one of those authors with cult followings that I know this review will find offensive. I admit that I have never read The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but I’m culturally aware of the impact he has had on pop culture and I’ll even suffer a benign chuckle when the number 42 pops up in media reference as the answer to everything. I’m aware of the influence that Adams has had, but honestly, I just don’t understand why. Yes, he is a humorous, and through my reading of the The Re...more

The insane randomness continues in this next installment of the HHGG series. I do love Douglas Adams. Just when I have had about enough of random, he gives you just enough plot to keep you interested…and vice versa. I really can’t complain about anything with these books, although I know that further along in the series, the plot is going to dissipate even more. I love all the characters, including Marvin, no matter how annoying he gets he brings perspective. I love the computer on the Heart of...more

"The Restaurant at the End of the Universe", is a comedic novel written by Douglas Adams. This is the second installment in his five part comedy series. This book leaves off with the Arthur, Ford, Trillian, and Zaphod escaping an alien battle on one of the many planets of this universe. They end up exploring space...more

Douglas Noël Adams was an English author, comic radio dramatist, and musician. He is best known as the author of the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series. Hitchhiker's began on radio, and developed into a "trilogy" of five books (which sold more than fifteen million copies during his lifetime) as well as a television series, a comic book series, a computer game, and a feature film that was comp...more
