This is the love story of Mary and Joseph. It was so sweet and pure.

*Quotes*

Pg 35 "If only lives could themselves weave smoothly in and out, joining and strengthening each other instead of so often tangling and breaking apart." (as she looks at patterns on the loom)

Pg 164 "Without faith love would be mockery."

Pg 291 These are Joseph's thoughts on Mary and him being the parents of Christ.

First, what I liked about this book is that it made me really think about what Mary and Joseph might be like, what their relationship was like, and what a trying thing it was for everyone to believe Mary. What I didn't like was the author's interpretation of the characters didn't match up with mine. Mary's mother in particular. Granted, it is quite an undertaking to define personalities so sacred and where there is little information about. The research is a little off--most scholars believe Jes...more

From the Publisher
Here from Marjorie Holmes, one of the most beloved authors of our day, is the extraordinary bestselling novel that tells the story of Mary and Joseph as it has never been told before--the greatest love story of all.

This is the story of two real people whose lives were touched by God: two people chosen by God to provide an earthly home for His Son. Here are Mary and Joseph-a teenage girl and a young carpenter-alone, frightened, in love, faced with family conflict, a hostil...more

Though this is listed as Christian fiction, it goes easy on the proselytizing, and is one of the best of the genre I've ever read. It's a rich and sensual story about a young couple's hopes and dreams and fears through the tumultuous months of a most supernatural pregnancy.

Mary and Joseph are real people in this book; often frightened and confused by what's happening to them. But they grow up a lot as the plot unfolds. Ultimately, this is a story about love - between man and woman - and ...more

I really enjoyed this whole trilogy. Obviously, it's fiction and I would have made some things happen differently than the author did, but she really brought Mary, Joseph, and Jesus to life in these stories in an impressive way. For instance, bringing the prodigal son story into Jesus' family brought the story even more to life to me. Clearly, it's an important and deep story beyond real life application, but the real life application is definitely there for many who have been connected to a pro...more

A wonderful story to read at Christmas Time. It's a beautifully written New Testament based historical fiction about Mary and Joseph. I believe the author tried to create a very close to real life account of this time period in the New Testament. I hope the characters, Mary and Joseph were as the author portrayed them in this story. Marjorie Holmes writes so compassionately about each of them and really brings their characters to life. I've read this book probably more times than any other ...more

A great Christmas read. If I could, I'd give this 3.5 stars. This book really goes well when you are studying all about Mary and Joseph at Christmas time or when reading the bible. It just made me stop and realize they were real people with real feelings and emotions, rather than biblical figures only. I loved the sweet love story that took place and really thinking about how Mary and Joseph must have been viewed in their tightknit community. An easy read that made me connect to my scriptur...more

I wanted a good Christmas book and a historical novel of the first Christmas seemed a good way to go. I enjoyed it. It made you think about all aspects of Mary and Joseph's life before Christ's birth. Most of it I didn't want to think about; the struggles each family went through. By the end you are left feeling better about the struggles even knowing the final outcome. I felt better knowing the trials brought them closer to God, to each other and humbled them in a way that prepared them to pare...more

This book started so good. I loved seeing the love and passion Mary and Joseph had for one another. It was so first love "twitter-pated". The first 65 pages set up a sweet love story but then I turned the page and unfortanately I was seriously let down. From the time Mary goes to visit Elizabeth, close the book. I kept reading hoping at least the boredom would cure my insomnia...no luck. Go to primary. They'll tell you the same story and at least there you get to sing songs and color p...more

I first read this at my brother's when I was newly married and had the then-popular short 'fro perm, so I'm guessing 1979? I like to read this at Christmas time and think about how it must have been.... Like the author, just to sit and ponder that these were real people and this miracle actually happened in their previously ordinary lives.

This is a very creative and endearing rendition of the story of Mary and Joseph. It was great to visualize what it might have been like to be in their shoes and this author does a great job of that. She has great character development and a strong emotional foundation to draw you in. I suggest this book to anyone who is interested in a creative description of an event that most of us are familiar with but is quite vague on details.

I finished this book just before Christmas. It is a history novel. The author takes you to the life of Joseph and Mary and what it would have been like to be in their shoes, the shoes of their parents and family to bring the Son of God to earth. Was Joseph at the delivery? What would everyone in their town think of this girl who had not had a wedding yet and be with child? I really enjoyed it.

I've read this book almost every year since I was in highschool. The story takes place from the time Mary is first a woman (she gets a period) until Jesus is born. The author does a great job describing how the characters must have felt. After reading this book I realized how hard it must have been for both families. I usually read it around Christmas time.

This book was a bit wierd for me. I guess only certain aspects of it were but I think that perhaps that is because it is difficult to picture Mary and Joseph as regular people. And obviously they weren't really. Which is probably why I had a hard time with just a couple of ideas in the book. Still, overall, I liked it.

This is not an author of my religion and occasionally I question some assumptions made in the story. That being said, I loved the way it caused me to fall in love with Joseph, the man who would raise Jesus. I enjoy the descriptions of the towns and country, the people traditions and especially the characters.

I really give it 3 1/2 stars. The story was short and I feel like the author dragged it on to make it longer, but it was an interesting perspective. I'd like to think that Mary and Joseph's relationship was really like this. Even though this is fiction, I will forever see Mary and Joseph in a new light.

You've all got to read this close to Christmas time. I did a few years ago, and it was one of the best Christmas seasons I've ever had. It tells the story of Joseph and Mary, their love story. I'm excited to see there's a second book now, 3 from Galilee.

Gack! I couldn't finish reading this one. It's nice to examine what life might have been like in Jesus's time, and it would have been nice to actually make it to His birth, but this book was just far too mushy for me to perservere.

The story held my interest not because it is true but because it gave me a picture of the day to day life of people in that era and potential situations and events that could have happened to the couple.
