Two essays about the development of the workers' movement and socialism before WWI in Western Europe.

The second essay was an interesting attempt to look at what drove workers to build up unions, and how socialist consciousness developed among workers.

Ultimately, both authors conclude that the Western European working class was getting more conservative before WWI (with the exception of Britain). I think they over-generalize, and overlook the development of a significant revolutionary minority
