3 stars. Great writing and interesting characters, plus a unique location of Ireland. Great potential, but the story just didn't grab me. It started great but in the end it was just too focused on the conflict (hero/heroine are on opposite sides of a political cause - the Irish Civil War, and they must get the other to see things their way) and not enough on anything interesting. Countess of Scandal takes place in 1790s Ireland. There is strife between the landowners and the Irish people. Will is torn between his love of Eliza and his duty to "family, to England, to our estate". Eliza, also part of the aristocracy, has always been proud of Ireland. She was born there and considers herself Irish, not British. She will do anything to help the Irish people - even if it puts her in danger.

As the story opens, childhood friends Eliza Blacknall and William Denton are about to be parted. Both from Protestant, Anglo-Irish families in Ireland, the two are about to go down very different paths. Eliza's parents have arranged a match for her, and she will remain in Ireland. Though Protestant and from an aristocratic family, Eliza loves Ireland and its people and culture, and believes the country to have been treated unfairly. William, as a younger son, will join the army and, in doing so, joins an institution that Eliza sees as an oppressor of the land she loves.

The book then jumps forward seven years to the main plot, which takes place in Ireland slightly before and during the 1798 rebellion. Eliza, now Countess Mount Clare, is a widow and active with the United Irishmen in seeking freedom for Ireland. Though her family's position protects her for now, her activities draw enough suspicion to cause whispers about her in Dublin society. Will, now Major Denton, has spent years posted to the West Indies, but has been called back to Ireland to take part in quelling the unrest in Ireland.

The two cross paths at a party where Eliza is chaperoning her younger sister and they spar almost immediately. Though they argue, one can tell that the old friendship and attraction between them remains, and it is clear that Will's initial pursuit of Eliza is driven by his desire to protect her. Serving in the army, Will knows what has been happening in Ireland and he sees the danger in which Eliza's activities place her. However, even as Eliza and Will disagree over the uprising, their attraction for one another causes them to begin a passionate affair. Their old fondness begins to deepen into something else altogether, and if you love stories of star-crossed lovers, you should enjoy this one.

When I first saw Eliza engaged in clandestine pamphlet writing and undercover work with the Irish, I'll admit it raised a red flag for me and my first thought was, "Oh no! I like Eliza. Please don't make her feisty!" And thankfully, she's not.

I'm suprised how good this book was! I bought this on sale, it cost like few €:s. I thought it would be either really silly or boring, but it was really good.

The book tells the story of Eliza and Will. They fell in love when they were young, but they couldn't be together. Eliza's parents had chosen a husband for her and Will left to join the army.

Eliza Blacknall and William Denton were childhood friends, and over time their childish tricks slowly blossoming into an adolescent crush. But Eliza is pressured into marrying Lord Mount Clare and Will, a younger son, leaves their Ireland home for the English army, hoping to make his way in the world. Eliza is heartbroken at his decision to wear that infamous red coat, which has long symbolized Ireland’s oppression in her mind.

Years later, Eliza is a widow writing patriotic letters to United Irish papers. William is returning to the island as a Major, sent to squelch any Irish rebellion. When he discovers Eliza’s patriotic papers, he is torn between his duty and his love for her that has never died. Eliza finds herself similarly torn, between her love for her blessed Ireland and her love for William Denton. As sparks fly between rebel and English forces everywhere, the flames of Eliza and Will’s love ignite into a dangerous passion (yes, ladies, I did write that).

What did I like about this book? Every single character was completely true to themself, all the time. Eliza was passionate about Ireland, and Will was passionate about her – and his duty, leading to a bit of confusion on his part. Their love was comfortable but intense. There was no passionate build-up or chase, but I was alright with that seeing as they had been best friends. It was a story of love unrequited getting a second chance amidst a bloody war.

The romantic plot, I thought, was well done. It was, admittedly, very predictable – they got together about a quarter of the way through the book and then kept getting together afterwards. But I thought it was very sweet, and despite the lack of a ‘chase’, thoroughly enjoyed their romance. As far as the war plot, I thought McKee did an excellent job making the reader understand the horror and violence of the time, which was key. The only thing that could’ve been better is if Eliza had done a few more patriotic things at the end of the book. She started off with patriotic writings and meetings and all of a sudden everything she’d been doing seemingly dropped off the face of the earth.

The book could’ve used a better resolution, though I think that might come with the ending of the series (after the second and third books, which I’m now desperate to read). Overall it was a decent book and a great second-chances love story that was tender, sweet, and romantic.

Bottom Line: I loved this story because of the character development. Each character was unique and true to his or herself. The plot was intriguing and well-developed with good set-up for the next book, as long as you’re okay with violence in the plot (it is a war, after all). I loved the best-friends-now-lovers romantic plot. *Sighs* How sweet.(less)

How is it possible to take such a devastating time in history and turn it into a heart-warming, tender love story – good question! The answer it appears is the writing ability of Laurel McKee and the talent to turn what could be seen as only sadness and despair into love and romance. This book gives you a history lesson that makes you understand how personal this fight was and help the reader understand how tragic the circumstance was but yet how two people that really love one another can make the best of the worst times. You have to learn to trust even when the person you love may be the one who is spying on you. Excellent Read!

Countess of Scandal is a historical romance set in Ireland during a period of political upheaval. The rebellion against Britain brings out Countess Eliza Mont Clair's idealism and nationalism and adds tension and excitement to the plot. I hadn't read anything that captures this time in Irish history and enjoyed this aspect of the book.

I expected more from this novel. It wasn't bad -- I've certainly read much worse -- I just felt a little disengaged from Eliza and Will the majority of the time. Eliza and Will always loved each other, but they didn't anticipate how deeply that love ran or how affected they would each be by it. And to make matters worse...they are now fighting on opposite sides of what's becoming a very ugly and bloody battle!

I loved that Eliza & Will's love story was so obvious yet so complicated at the same time. From the get-go, it was understood that these two people loved each other so you didn't have to go through the whole song & dance about how they hated then grew to love each other - they just did! However, it wasn't quite so easy for them. She was an Irish Countess suspected of rebellion and he was an English soldier who by duty could have had her executed for her treason.

By day, they were the Countess and the Soldier - no one suspecting that by night, they were just a boy & a girl having a passionate love affair! In the darkness of her bedchamber, titles flew out the window along with their clothes and inhibitions. Eliza was all proper in formal company, but she was a fiery little minx when she was alone with Will.

This story was full of passion - passion between a man & a woman, passion between a soldier & rebellious countess, passion for their own causes, passion for each others safety. Definitely no shortage of passion here! I appreciated how dearly they loved each other and how much they loved being together, but also how important the greater cause was...they weren't entirely selfish which I thought was admirable!

The reason I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because I really thought the story could have continued. It was almost as if the solution to their situation had been there all along and they simply hadn't grasped it until that moment. Another thing that I found odd was that they never actually said 'I love you' to each other. As I mentioned earlier, it was understood and they thought it to themselves - but they never quite expressed it verbally to each other. This didn't hurt the story, I just thought it seemed a bit weird!

All in all, I did enjoy it and would recommend it to those of you who love historical romances as much as I do.(less)

There were two interesting storylines going on - Eliza and Will's romance, and Eliza's efforts to help the Irish escape English rule. I have a only general understanding of the history of The Troubles in Ireland; I do not know the specific battles and such. This book takes place during the Irish Rebellion of 1798. I do think it's an interesting subject to work into a Romance novel.

As the book opens, Lady Eliza Blacknall has just escaped her parent's party in County Kildare to meet with her sweetheart, Will Denton. They are childhood friends and sweethearts, although their parents don't approve. As they talk, Eliza suddenly realizes Will is wearing a Red Coat - he's purchased his commission and is now part of an English Regiment! Eliza cannot bear it; although she is Protestant, she considers herself a true Irishwoman and feels like Will has betrayed her and their homes.

We pick back up again seven years later: Eliza is now a young widow living in Dublin. She is very active in the secret societies of the United Irishmen, writing pamphlets and hiding accused sympathisers. Will has come back to Ireland as a Major in the army and is staying in Dublin. Of course they hit it off immediately, and start having nightly trysts in her bedroom after dark. Eliza had been in a loveless marriage, and the things she experiences in the bedroom with Will surprise and delight her. She knows she still loves him, but cannot accept that he is in the English army - it goes against everything she believes in. Will knows he loves Eliza and tries to keep her out of trouble; he knows she's under suspicion for treason and helps her out of a sticky spot a time or two. He wants her to give up her subversive activities and leave Ireland until things settle down.

There were so many tender, sensual scenes between Eliza and Will; it was obvious they were very much in love. Through most of the book, however, I just couldn's see how Ms. McKee was going to be able to reconcile their love for each other against their differing political views. When Will left Dublin my heart broke for both of them. Even when they were reunited it still seemed to be a case of star-crossed lovers.

There were, of course, some dangerous scenes that Will and Eliza had to face together; her family was no longer safe on their land and needed to escape to Dublin. I liked that Eliza was a smart, opinionated heroine but not obnoxious or TSTL. She was very careful in her clandestine involvement with the United Irishmen. When she assisted Will through some dangerous situations later in the book, she took calculated chances and did not rush into things trying to be a hero. Will was a good hero in that he never talked down or humored Eliza, and while he did try to persuade her to give up her involvement in the illegal organization, he did not try to change her political views on the subject.

The ending of the book was a bit abrubt, I don't know that Will's decisions would have been accepted as easily as it appeared to in the book, nor do I think Eliza would have accepted the decision she and Will made together. Her convictions seemed to be too strong to go along with that course of action.

All in all, this was an interesting read. I liked the set-up for the next book, which will feature Eliza's sister Anna. I give Countess of Scandal 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.(less)

At first I wasn’t sure that I would like this book. After some of the other reviews that I read and just knowing what this book was about I didn’t think it was my type of book. But thankfully I was wrong! This book was very exciting. When I was finished with it I told my husband that I was exhausted and needed to do something to help my mind relax. I cannot wait to start Anna’s book. I feel like I already know her so well but can’t wait to get to know her even more.

First in the Daughters of Erin trilogy and my first by this author. The story of two childhood friends who come of age during a time of unrest between Ireland and England and on opposite sides of the conflict. The two cannot deny their attraction to each other, although they try, and soon the special bond developed in their childhood leads them on a romantic and suspenseful journey back to each other with a few distractions along the way. I look forward to the second book in this trilogy.

This book was just a little too depressing and heavy for me. I liked the characters, I was interested in how the story would turn out, but it was not a "fun" read at all.

I'm a genealogist and many of my ancestors are from Ireland, so that added to the depression. I love reading about Irish history, but don't want my romance novels to be so "graphic" and bloody.

I really enjoyed this book. The setting was great being in the war in Ireland and it let's see a little of what war in a country is like, and the characters let you see a bit of the two sides of the story of the war. The characters are both strong and opinionated. The only thing is that the ending seemed to end suddenly and you wondered what happened after they got together. There are other books involving the other sisters and I hope you can read a little more of Eliza's story in them.

One word comes to my mind when I think of Laurel McKee's writing Potential with a big P.

I loved the strong heroine, historic setting, and thought her writing was really good. I just wish the book was about 200 pages longer. It could easily have been an epic love story.

I was very excited to get this book. The summary on the promised intrigue, adventure, 'history' and romance. I was surprised to find I was a little wrong about the type of story this book was going to be. I had to put it aside, even though I was supposed to read immediately and post a review....i'm sorry, but i couldn't get past the distraction of the romance part. Political Romeo&Juliette in the Irish Rebellion of 1798. Ample set up for the next book in the series, which is helpful when you consider what happens to that sister. What a great book! Great story line and kept me wanting to read more. I would have to force myself to put the book down so that I could get some sleep for work the next day. I really considered staying up really late and calling in sick to work the next day. Ireland + rebellious fighting = a great story.

I want to give this more stars but I had to skip too much of it for graphic romance scenes. I would classify this as a romance novel so if you like that kind of thing you will like this book (I thought it was historical fiction). I really enjoyed the story line. Reading this makes me want to read more books about the Irish Civil War. I think Eliza is very admirable in her convictions to help all Irish people but I also admire Will. It is so hard...more

The premise sounded original and intriguing. I've long had a fascination with Ireland, so I decided to give Countess of Scandal a try.

But I was disappointed in the execution, and I couldn't bring myself to finish the book. Not that McKee's writing was bad, but it didn't match the originality of the premise. A great historical love story filled with the history of Ireland in the late 18th and early 19th century.
