Joan Richardson is so deep in the swing of Stevens’s world that she rarely steps outside to say much of anything critical about his aesthetics, racial attitudes, social privilege, sexual hang-ups, or even finally the poetry, on which the bio’s remarkably quiet aside from quoting key lines that serve as wallpaper for themes in the life.
