I enjoyed reading Nikki Giovanni's thoughts about the spirituals and what double meanings were being expressed through these songs. I'm surprised by how few of these songs I know. We sang "He’s Got the Whole World In His Hand" and "Welcome Table" in elementary school. I learned "This Little Light of Mine", "Kumbaya", and "Joshua Fit the Battle of Jericho" somewhere, though I don't remember exactly where. I've heard references to "Follow the Drinking Gourd" and "Jacob's Ladder" though I don't kno...more

She lives in Blacksburg, Virginia, where she is a University Distinguished Professor at Virginia Tech.
