Holy cliffhanger, Batman!
The sequel to A Rush of Wings is every bit as gripping and addictive as its predecessor. And Phoenix pushes everything just a little bit further. There's just a little bit more action, a little bit more urgency, a little bit more romance.
And a whole lot more "holy crap!" The end of this book blew me away and left me wondering how I will ever survive an entire year waiting for the next one.

After being apart for months, Dante Baptiste and Heather Wallace find themselves together again in Heather’s hometown of Seattle, with their enemies right behind them. But while fighting the forces determined to control Dante, each of them must also fight their own internal battles.
Heather must decide if it is safer remaining with the FBI or get out before they decide she is a loose end that needs tying up. She also knows she must finally decide which emotion is stronger, her love for Dante or h...more

I have been completely drawn in by the world that Adrian has created. The combination of Dante's origins of both True Blood and Fallen combined with his tortured childhood at the hands of doctors Moore and Wells and the rest of Bad Seed has resulted in a truly compelling and emotional story. I'll admit that upon starting this one I was impatiently awaiting the reunion of Heather and Dante, but I quickly got drawn into the additional storylines as well. Discovering the depth of Dr. Wells' depravi...more
The story of Dante, Heather and the Fallen continues.
Dante's headaches are getting worse, Heather is in danger, Lucien may or may not be gone forever and we get to meet Caterina- a hit woman mortal raised by a vampire and Annie - Heather's bipolar self-destructive sister. On top of that, the cast of crazies this time are around are just as mean and badass but a touch more psychotic than the last batch.
Well worth it to get sucked into this story that is at turns both dark and tender.

Recommends it for:
fans of PNR and thrillers and fans of the first book.
This was still really interesting since the characters are so great, but the first 3/4 of the book was rather slow. Not much happened. Just a lot of talking about Heather's mother, Robert Wells, and dealing with Annie. I was also disappointed that there wasnt much of Lucien, because I really love him. It didnt feel like it really got going until chapter 35. And then, of course, the last 5 chapters were amazing! It really paid off in the end.

Again, the plot (which pretty much continues from the events of the first book) was a little too long and drawn-out. But it did introduce a few more elements that will only thicken the plot in future books and maybe make the series on a whole a more satisfying read.
I'm still finding the whole idea of Dante-as-a-rockstar slightly cringe-worthy. The whole notion of it really doesn't bother me, because it makes a little bit of a sense for a twenty-something guy living in that kind of world to find...more

This is the second book in The Maker's Song series and starts almost immediately after A Rush of Wings left off. ITB follows Heather, Dante and the rest of the characters from the first book as they cope with (1) the Government wanting traces of their failed experiment wiped out and/or studied, which is bad news for Heather, who already has her hands full trying to cope with her bipolar sister Annie (2) the Fallen trying to find and use Dante to save their fading realm, and (3) the psychotic Wel...more
I wasn't sure with the first book if I would actually like this series. I didn't really care for a lot of the characters but I decided to read the second to see where it leads.I'm glad I did. I liked this book. My only complaint is the number of characters that were introduced throughout the chapters and the names given to certain things or events. There is a glossary at the end of each book (which you will need). That took some of the enjoyment of the reading, as your constantly skimming the glo...more
After seeing Dante unmake one of his childhood tormenters and saving Heather from a gunshot wound, Heather decides to take a short break from their just starting relationship and go back to Seattle and see what she can do to keep her job. Heather lies about the investigation into the serial killer and her involvement with Dante and is touted a hero. She is offered a promotion, but told if she doesnt take it then she will be deemed mentally unfit and fired and made to look incompetent to all. Dan...more
I'm not sure what it is with this series, but the last two books have taken me forever to get through. However, I've loved every minute of them! Maybe my mind is intentionally slowing down, so I can savor the book that much longer ^_~

Second in The Maker's Song, a dark urban fantasy series revolving around a young Maker/Unmaker whom his father is desperate to keep from the attention of the Elohim. The action in this story takes place mostly in Seattle, Washington.
The Story
Dante is on tour with his band, Inferno, with a planned stop in Seattle. He needs to see Heather. Be sure she's okay. Heather certainly isn't sure. The briefings she is called in for certainly don't reassure Heather; she feels as though she's teetering on th...more

This is the second book in Phoenix's 'Maker's Song' series. Only a few weeks have passed since the events in 'A Rush of Wings' - Dante Baptiste, lead singer to the band 'Inferno', Nightkind (vampire), troubled heartthrob and experiment 'S' is touring with his band. FBI agent Heather Wallace has returned home to Seattle to take care of her younger sister, Annie, who suffers from bipolar - the same illness that haunted their mother before she was tragically murdered by a serial killer. Wallace is...more
This is the second story in The Maker Series by Adrian Phoenix, it follows on from the first story “A Rush of Wings” and is a good follow on.
Dante Baptiste has been programmed since birth to be a sociopath by Dr Robert Wells and genetic scientist who wants to change the world. Dante is not supposed to be able to think for himself but he can and does and when he tries to remember his past he get splitting migraines and also has seizures. Heather was determined to keep her nose down and act like she didn't know anything she shouldn't, but the bureau didn't buy it and she was placed at the top of the hit list along with Dante. When Dante comes to Seattle on tour and the two meet, things get a little hairy as they constantly get targeted. An unlikely suspect also is plotting to get a hold of Dante for their own agenda, perhaps the worst one yet. It's becoming harder and hard to discern friend from foe, and Dante and Heather must st...more
read this right after I finished reading A Rush of Wings. I loved the first book so much that I couldn't afford to wait. Unfortunately, because of my irrational and almost impossible obsession with The Maker's Song #1, I knew there was a chance I was setting myself up for disappointment for book two. There were definitely moments while reading that I felt it wasn't as good as the first, but fortunately, there were enough consolation prizes. For one thing, I cannot possibly be disappointed when...more

Another six star book. OMG was this incredible. Again angels and vamps, but what she did with them was amazing. I loved everything about this book:
how she used the angel's names and the hierarchy and the mythology she shapes out of standard angelology (Gabriel as Elohim. YES!!!!);
Dante's powers are developing nicely and what he does will have you going, Damn that's wicked;
Heather's sister is bipolar and it is dealt with sensitively, but doesn't pull any punches. I look forward to seeing where...more

3.5 stars. Dante is the son of a vampire and fallen. He was taken at birth and raised in a secret FBI program called Bad Seed. Bad Seed for some reason raises and cultivates pshychos, seriel killers etc. They take anything from the child that brings pleasure, toys, books, and place them in the most unstable enviroments imaginable. Dante's memory was erased and everytime he gets close to recovering something hidden he gets nosebleeds and migraines. Dante and Heather (an FBI agent that got too clo...more

Not Boding Well for Damaged Dante
FBI Agent Heather Wallace knew that the events in D.C. hadn't been a victory for the home team. Not fully, anyway. She returned to Seattle, leaving Dante in New Orleans, both to give herself time to come to terms with the massive paradigm shift she went through when her hunt for the serial killer known as CCK dropped her into a dark world of vampires, fallen angels, mad scientists, and government conspiracy, and to try to protect Dante as much as she could throug...more

I really enjoyed this book. As I said in my review of book #1 in the Maker's Song, A Rush of Wings, Adrian Phoenix has created an awesome world filled with supernatural beings, vamps, fallen angels, etc... and the plot and background of the characters is intriguing as well as the many twists and turns...there are so many places Phoenix can go with this series. The hero of the story, Dante Prejean, aka "Baptiste" is a sexy goth vampire, who despite his bad-a** attitude and stubborn as a mule pers...more
In the Blood picks up where A Rush of Wings ended. Dante the enigmatic rockstar vampire and Heather the FBI agent had tackled a serial killer and uncovered bits and pieces of Dante's childhood in the previous book.
Dante now knows a lot more about his past, the role of the Government branch and details about this real family (trying not to give away spoilers here) - he's much more than a vampire, and he doesn't yet know what it all entails. He's met up with Heather in Seattle, who has her own pr...more

Rant: I'm getting to have a big beef with the covers of the Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance books I've been reading lately. Would it be so very hard to pick a cover model who at least vaguely resembles the main character? In this one Heather is described as having read hair, pale skin and blue eyes. The cover model is brunette (with perhaps a tiny bit of auburn in the highlight) with brown eyes. And half naked in punk clothes, of course. Unless this is supposed to be one of the minor charac...more
This book managed to be both slight slow-paced and a bit frantic at the same time. I was anxiously awaiting the reunion of Dante and Heather, which really didn't take that long, but it seemed too long because the POVs kept changing and other people's agendas kept getting in the way and this continued throughout the book.
I supppose that covert government branches that carry out 'non-existing' experiments on people wouldn't play well with others - even their not-so-covert counterparts - and the p...more

I really enjoyed this book. I found myself slowing down the read - simply closing the book at points just to take a break and come back to it. I'm glad I did because I realized I would think about the story, the characters, where things where at in the story and wondering what would happen next. You know - thinking about a good book like you do as you go about the really real world.

The story is really interesting, but I can't say that I loved reading it.
It got really confusing for me to keep up with all of the bad guys. They kept coming out of the woodwork every time I turned a page! As if that wasn't bad enough, sometimes the author used their first name and sometimes she used their last name. I'm not kidding. There was Dr. Wells (evil mastermind of the Bad Seed project), Alex Lyons (Dr. well's son/Athena wells twin brother/government agent/psycho), Athena Wells/Hades (T...more

In The Blood picks up right where A Rush of Wings left off, and it has all of the same pros and cons going for it. Mostly.
The verdant world is opened up a bit, and a bad guy from the last book is continued and dealt with in this book. Heather and Dante continue to evolve, and Dante's past is delved into a bit more. All things in small increments.
For a 400-page book, this feels like an in-between space, not truly dealing with heavy issues, and not truly resolving anything significant. I suppose...more

I liked this one so much better than "A Rush of Wings". The story and writing style both were more focused and flowed a lot smoother. Dante can't catch a break, if it's not Bad Seed, it's the spawn of members of Bad Seed or it's his other heritage coming for him. Heather remains steadfast and strong even with the reappearance of her sister Annie and all the drama that comes with her. Alex and Athena are the two creepiest, fucked up children..talk about experiments gone awry. We learn more about...more
