Spells (Wings #2)
"I can't just storm in and proclaim my intentions. I can't 'steal' you away. I just have to wait and hope that, someday, you'll ask," Tamani said.
"And if I don't?" Laurel said, her voice barely above a whisper.

I picked up this book simply because I wanted to know what happened to these Mary Sues. I had no interest in the plot. I had no interest in the story itself. And because I would enjoy a good laugh.
I didn't.
This was so bad that it didn't even let me laugh at its stupidity. It was that stupid.
First of all, Pike's writing is exactly like Meyer's. They both describe the most irrelevant things. They both have an adjective for every noun on each freaking page. It bothers me to complete death.

What a way to leave a girl hanging. Aprilynne Pike has now mastered the cliff hanger ending, right down to the last paragraph! Man, now how do I possibly wait until 2011 for Illusions?
This was a great novel from Aprilynne Pike. I really enjoyed the building of characters and the glimpse into the life of Laurel before she was "human". The world of faerie according to Aprilynne is fascinating, and she really gets me thinking about how Laurel's character might change the faerie world some day.

Okay, seriously, just pack my suitcases right now. I am moving to Avalon!
Spells begins a number of months after the events of Wings. The time has come for Laurel to depart from her "normal" life to the academy in Avalon, where she will be taught what it means to be a Fall faerie.
Laurel struggles with learning all of the things she missed and has forgotten while "posing" as a human. She isn't sure what to make of just about any of her...more
Beware conservative mothers.
I must be honest, am ticked at these books. My beautiful 12 year old daughter loves these stories and as a mom I like to read what they are reading…and in this case I was glad I did. Here is a very nice story of a faerie and a love triangle written on about a 5th grade level. It has the right amount of action and attraction. BUT, interspersed throughout this story are tales of male enhancement herbs, sex just for fun, and the often “how is he in bed”. (I didn't finish...more

In the sequel to Wings, a year has passed for Laurel who found out that she was a faerie. Although she completely accepts who and what she is, she refuses to turn her back on the life that she has always known, her life with human parents and friends. This is causing a few problems in Avalon as Laurel really needs to learn what it means to be a real faerie and Tamani begins to show his true feelings.

Why can't I stop screaming and crying?!
Why?
WHY?!?
Oh, I know. BECAUSE OF TAMANI.
The Good
- I loved Avalon! It was amazing. I love it when faerie books actually take place in their faerie land. I've read many versions of it but the Avalon in this book was very creative. I also learned a lot about the faerie hierarchy. I never read a book before where there were ranks between the different faerie types.
- So much more romantic tension! It was so damn frustrating! I mean, I loved it and everything, bu...more

These books are fairly quick reads, yet this one took me ages. I often couldn't be bothered to pick it up, because I feel the story lacked a lot of polishing. The idea of Avalon is nice, but if you support its claims of awesomeness by putting down A Midsummer Night's Dream, Camelot, and even Eve, all without any sufficient explanation, you get me very annoyed. There are tidbits of a background, that are not built on at all and destroys the source material it so hard tries to work with.

Wow!!! What a strong, amazing sequel. There are very rare times for me when I like the second in a series better then the first. But Spells was fantastic! It’s even better then Wings!!!!!!
The cover for Spells is gorgeous. It drew me in again, just like Wings. This book sucks you out when you still want more.
First of all, I’d like to call upon the amazing description in Spells. This book would definitely not be the same without it! It was truly amazing and incredible, making everything seem muc...more

HHhmmm... What to say. I am having major brain-block. I liked this book and I thought it was a good sequal to Wings. I finally understand what people were experiencing during Twilight when they were upset that Bella didn't go for Jacob, because I am totally not understanding what is so special about.. David? Is that his name? See, I don't think he is very special because I cannot even remember his name and I finished the book this morning. Tamani is where it's at and Laurel better wake up soon a...more
Laurel has just turned sixteen and, as agreed, has returned to Avalon to attend the academy. She needs learn about the abilities she has as a fall faerie. While in Avalon she spends more time with Tamani. She feels more torn between her love for her human boyfriend, David, and the exotic Tamani. Soon she will have to decide which boy, and the world they represent, has more pull on her heart.[return][return]I enjoyed this story. It picks up nicely from where Wings ended. It focuses more on the lo...more

ugh. this book was just... bad. Basically the whole time the main airhead ( all the characters are skin-deep) lauren (or is it laurel?) , is woefully complaining about her life and love interests. She cares about nobody but herself and continuously stomping on the feelings of both her incredibly boring human boyfriend (David) and her Tamani, (best character in the whole book) her childhood fairy friend who has a thing for her , and she maybe has a thing for him but David is too "interesting" and...more
Laurel had finally accepted the fact that she's a faerie, but that doesn't mean she has to enjoy every aspect of it; who really wants to hide a blossom growing out of their back every fall? And she refuses to trade in her old life for a new one in Avalon, where all other Fae live. She likes her life, where she gets to make choices: which college to attend, who to love, and when she sleeps and eats. But when she's summoned to Avalon to be educated on faerie matters, she realizes there are some b...more
I have to say this one was much better than the first one but still I'm not giving it more than 3.5 stars! The story at some points was evolving a little too slow.. but still it was interesting.
I'm a little torn on how I feel about Laurel, she just really annoys me sometimes, but at the end I was very proud of how she handled everything and of the decisions she made.
David is just such a sweetheart and it breaks my heart that Laurel kept hurting him.

I didn't find book 2 in this series quite as good as the first one. It seemed to be lacking in an action-filled plot moving the characters forward. We seem to be stuck in Laurel's fence-straddling dilemma over who she loves the most: Tamini, the handsome sentry fairy, or David, her human high school buddy. I also felt that these two characters needed more differentiating than just he's a fairy and he's a human. The story starts with summer school training for Laurel in Avalon, the dazzling world...more

Ok, so I have finally finished the Wings series, and I am extremely happy with the ending. I feel like it really wraps everything up, while giving you a satisfying end. Here goes my review for the entire series.
Characters:
Laurel: First book, didn't like her so much. I found her quite annoying in that she is shy, but very judging, and can't even save herself. What intrigued me about her was that, unlike most fairy stories, she didn't have wings, more of a bl...more

honestly, i would have handled the ending differently. Whenever i read a book, i always side with the main character, because I'm viewing it through their eyes, and understanding their reasoning. But this is a first for me. the first that I'm not in favor of the option the character takes. (I'm Team Edward, for Pete's sakes.) But, although i wouldn't have done the opposite, i still didn't like her decision. And I'm trying REALLY hard no to spoil, so I'll just say this. David should not...more

Last year I enjoyed Pike's debut novel, Wings, and gave it four stars. I think her sophomore effort is even better and shows some of her growth as a writer. As with her first book, Pike still paces the story well and I think the prose and dialogues are improved from Wings. There is almost a no-nonsense approach to the story and I really appreciate the fact that events are constantly moving--I never once felt like the story was dragging.

its been so long since ive read this and i couldnt remember much so i checked it out again so i could do this review. i skimmed and scanned &skipped a lot of things.
the main character isnt all that likeable.
there are some pretty cool things in here, though. like the way society is layed out,&the ranks of the different types of faeries.
like the relationship between tam&laurel, that she outranks him.i like how if she wants them2 be 2gether, she'll have to ask him

The first book was really good, but this one wasn't as great as I was expecting.
I was left disappointed near the end. The story slowly began to lose what had made it so good at first and began to just seem bull and repetitive. I really don't think it needed to be made into a series. It could have all been done in a first book (though it would have been rather long) or just a second if necessary. A lot of stuff was dragged out and by the second book the love triangle is just downright annoying. I...more

Finally picked up this book. Wasn't expecting much considering Wings. Wasn't disappointed. Met my fairly low expectations.
This book was 10% plot, 90% David vs Tamani and other boring relationship problems
The 10% Plot was basically SPOILER ALERT (You have been warned)
-She goes to the Academy in Avalon and learns the basics to potion making. This was fairly short section. I was expecting it to be like 1/2 the book, which is what generally happens with books that involve a training section...more

This is the sequel to Wings and it's about a year after Laurel learns that she is a faerie and the events occurring onwards. In this book it was really about Lauren being sort of torn between two of her worlds. She accepts who she is as a faerie but this also causes a few problems. She is set to Avalon which is the faerie realm for one whole summer. Since she's a Fall Faerie, she has to learn the skills and the ways of being one. The first part of the book was mostly her being in Avalon, I was r...more

“Are you free to be anything more than a friend to me? If," and she stressed the if heavily, "I ever decided to live in Avalon and wanted to be with you, would you be free enough to do that?"
He looked away, and Laurel could tell he'd been avoiding a conversation like this.
"Well?" she insisted.
"If you wanted it," he finally said.
"If I wanted it?"
He nodded. "I'm not allowed to ask. You would have to ask me."
Her breath caught in her chest, and Tamani looked at her.
"Why do you think David bothers me so much?"
Laurel looked down at her lap.
"I can't just storm in and proclaim my intentions. I can't 'steal' you away. I just have to wait and hope that, someday, you'll ask."
"And if I don't?" Laurel said, her voice barley above a whisper.
"Then I guess I'll wait forever.”
