I'm a big paranormal romance/urban fantasy fan and I've enjoyed some of Linda Howard's mainstream romance books previously. So when I saw she had written something in the paranormal genre, I thought it'd be a slam dunk. I was disappointed. The book was slow and boring. It's one of those books where the authors do the world building as data dumps of information, explaining everything to the reader instead of letting the information build more naturally during action and dialogue. And the the sett...more

Blood Born is the first book for me to read by either Linda Howard or Linda Jones. It has a lot promise to be a fascinating series in the world of vampires and the supernatural. The vampires are both beautiful and terrifying with their fair share of rotten apples. I like that because you never know what to expect from the vampires and the fact that they are all not beautiful to refreshing. There was also a mixture of other preternatural characters which I love to see in story, th...more

A war is brewing. Vampires, Warriors and humans will all play a roll. Luca is blood born meaning he was born from two vampires. He works as the assassin of the Vampire Council. When the Council leader calls telling him to come in there is trouble is on it's way, he never thought that it would lead him straight to Chloe Fallon.

While I had heard of both Linda Howard and Linda Jones, they were still new authors to me. So I was excited to read this one and see what their take on vampires was like. I...more

I love to read different authors and genres but, my favorite is paranormal romance. I hadn't read either of these authors prior to this book. I often use Amazon recommendations to discover new authors and once again I wasn't disappointed.

Once you've read as many paranormal vampire romance novels as I have - they begin to look alike. However, the authors introduced a couple of interesting new concepts, to a well-worn plot (including the conduit and warrior connections).

Even though, I felt the e...more

The first book in the vampire series by Linda howard.

Because it is the first book, Linda Howard was setting the premises and the context for the next book to come. Hence it feels like data dumping at times and the pace is entirely too slow before picking up speed at the end of the book.

The stars is for the unique world that LH created which among tons of vampire books, still she can find something (somewhat) new in it.

After you've finished reading the book, that's the time you'll realize that the books was fun to read. It has a great story line. It has substance. It looks great on a bigger picture. It made me squeel sometimes for the cute parts. It made me want to read more in some parts, too. But I can say, its only few parts.

Actually there is nothing new to this book. A vampire in love with a human, covens, witches, powers. And some other things, too. The writter threw some spices that's why it became a new...more

I see this book is getting some less than enthusiastic reviews, and maybe if you're a die-hard vampire romance lover you'll have a different perspective, but I liked it. I didn't read this book because of the vampirse, though. Actually, I was surprised to see that Linda Howard had written a vampire book. I've read at least a dozen of her books, few of which have a paranormal element, and when they do, it's pretty minor. I was curious when I saw this one, especially since I have grudgingly found...more

This could have been a very good book. If you could take out the annoying repetitiveness that wastes many a page, and the interminable inner monologues between almost every sentence uttered by any of the characters, there is some promise underneath.

Some very interesting world building and good characters to carry a series with if they would just have some conversations to bring the various aspects and personalities out instead of the info dumping that goes on and on.

Chole has a great personality...more

A vampire book for adults! Sorry, I'm just so sick of the whole "Twilight" thing going on now.

Anyway, wow! This was a new take on an old theme. Good guys, bad guys, "sex and blood." What scene, by the way. This was the only part of the book that bothered me. Then, I thought about it, and well, okay. There were feelings there already.

Luca is hot. Chloe is real, funny, and very likable. She doesn't whine, but does what needs to get done with insights into her inner struggle.

I must admit, however,...more

A fantastic read, great plot. lots of action. The main Character is a rare blood born vampire who is two thousand years old and very powerful. Lucas Ambrus is an agent of a vampire council that governs vampirekind. He helps them preserve their secrecy and destroys any who betray them.

His good friend is killed and he uncovers a sinister conspiracy of rogue vampires bent on taking over the earth and enslaving humans. Chole Fallon is a conduit and a target because she can bring forth the spirit war...more

This book surprised me in many ways, not always in a good way but it did nonetheless. It's the first book in a new series and as in most first books it has the bitter task of introducing the world and the characters.

The world we are thrown in is nothing totally unique but it worked for me. We have vampires living hidden between the ignorant humans who are unaware of the danger they live in. Vampires aren't completely the way they are often pictured in these kind of book but they aren't really so...more

BLOOD BORN is the first in the Immortal Warrior series about warriors from a parallel dimension who need certain humans called conduits to call them into our world whenever mankind faces real danger. Vampires, having long since concealed their existence, are preparing to declare all out war on humanity and claim what they consider to be their rightful place in the world. Only one thing is stopping them: The sanctuary spell. Unless invited in,...more

I'm going to give this one 2.5 stars. I went in with lower expectations because I kept hearing that it wasn't a great story and it wasn't one of Howard's best works. Well I can say that I agree with the latter part of the statement. It wasn't one of Howard's best books but I don't think it was terrible.

There were some parts I found myself bored in, but other parts I found interesting. I think at this point I've read so many books about vamps that anything a little different draws my attention. S...more

When I picked up this book I wasn't sure what to expect. I was very pleased with this book. It was vastly different from other Linda Howard books I read. I got pulled into this book and enjoyed the ride. Luca was a yummy hero to read about and other characters stood out and grabbed my attention as well.. I can't wait to see if there is more to this story.. I sense a series coming.

One of my very favorite authors is Linda Howard. I have read (I think) every book she's ever done at least twice. I own a bunch of them and when I casually saw this on the FLOOR at Target...I had to get it. Blood Born is about vampires (they live in secret in this book unlike other vamp books) who are planning to take over humans basically and not be in hiding. But then there is a somewhat rogue vamp who thinks this is wrong and is going to try to save them. The deal is that some humans are "con...more

Vampires ruling the world as the masters of the humans. However there are ancient warriors who live in a different world unless they are needed to help the humans. They fought alongside humans in every major battle on earth though the humans were unaware. The warriors are the only people who can protect the humans from the vampires but...more

Luca Ambrus is a blood born, a vampire born of vampire parents. He is also the assasin for the Council who govern vampireville. Chloe Fallon is a conduit, a human who is able to channel spirit warriors into the physical world to protect mankind.

The Plot in this Linda Howard romance thriller involves a conspiracy of rogue vampire killing the conduits so that the vampires can rule the world without fighting the warriors. Luca saves Chloe twice from being killed, they bound and fall in love.

When I finished reading this book, I was conflicted as to if I liked it or not. On one hand, the characters were entertaining, and the story has a lot of potential as a series. On the other hand, there was so much inner dialogue, over-explination of the lexicon, and reiteration of the same facts over and over that I had a hard time staying involved in the story. I found myself skimming over many of the long-winded paragraphs, which were redundant, and, honestly, annoying after a while. I don't r...more

Even skimming, there was a lot of repetition and the only characters I liked were Nevada and Sorin (quasi-villains) but I'll probably end up reading/skimming the next one, assuming the person who lent me this one buys it (I won't).

Some of the cultural stuff was seriously annoying (the presumption that people with Greek names are obviously not from the US for one. For another, while the male blood-born vampire stopped maturing in his early 30s, the female blood born vampire reached her physical...more

This was a pretty decent book. This was the first time I've read this author and I would like to continue reading this series, however I haven't been able to find any information as to when the second book is planned to be released. I think it's been a few years since this one came out.

Anyway, I felt the writing was good and the idea of the story was interesting. I mostly liked the characters but I felt the heroine was too annoying at first. I don't like when heroines put up too much of a fight...more

I'm happy to note I'm not the only one who had problems with this book. Linda Howard is one of my favorite authors (I've reread Son of the Morning and Open Season far too many times to count!), but this book was so slow to start I couldn't take it anymore and just plain stopped reading.

There's a lot of info dump. Pages and pages of 'telling' and not a single 'showing'. No dialogue. No action. Nothing.

It drove me crazy, hence the DNF. That goes to show that not everyone should get onto the paran...more

Interesting plot and well written, but some of the more specific elements (e.g. a human who is somehow immune to a vampire's gift, a newborn vampire who just happens to have more control than other newborns, etc.) are too much like other, better known vampire stories. After an overly long, drawn out book, the ending was very abrupt, which left me unsatisfied and frustrated.

I LOVED this line: "Chloe, though, with her aneurysm, had lived every day knowing it might be her last, and still she had ca...more

Great start to a new paranormal romance series! Vampires, time traveling warriors and human conduits make this an original vampire paranormal romance. Started off a little slow but then jumped right into the action! Would have liked a little more romance between the main characters (Chloe and Luca), in between all of the action. There was a lot of world building which is necessary to the story but left little room for the main characters to get to know each other...I felt their love story was ru...more

I read a lot of romance books by Linda Howard, and wasn't surprised when she decided to start with the Vampire theme. Afterall, the whole vampire topic is so hot lately! Firstly, I'm so grateful to this book, because it actually introduced me to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward. Unfortunately after reading those, I can only give it a 4 star.

I loved this book! I wasn't very excited about reading it but it turned out to be really, really good. Kind of a cross between Twilight & True Blook.

Luca was amazing and I found Chloe to be a very likeable heroine. The supporting characters were interesting as well, even though some of them were quite evil!
As I was reading, I was worried that the ending would be unfulfilling, but it was excellent. I can't wait to read the next book - Warrior Rising. After all of the innocent people Sorin ki...more

Not a very unique story, a bit too predictable, but I found it readable. Could not help comparing with other books on vampires that I have read and caught myself ....more than a few times saying... "really? that's not how vampires..." and then I smile at myself. There must be something about this book that would make me want to read Warrior Rising bk2. Btw, love Luca - never saw him crying but hey love is weird!.. Did not get any connection to Chloe... not enough depth to her character imo. Want...more
