A great example of why Lindsey is such an amazing Historical romance author....her heroes are typical of the bodice rippers, but not quite as brutal. Her romance takes center stage but the secondary plot is engaging as well. It's a wild trek through a wild land. A somewhat innocent heroine, a savage and untamed Indian. He's a chest beater, she's got a stubborn streak and is on a mission. Great choice!
Love the book...Love the hero and heroin....satu lagi pahlawan yang seru dan seksi...Chandos a.k.a Kane Stranton

Guilty Pleasure #1

His Native American family brutally murdered during an unwarranted attack, Chandos encounters a young woman staying with the man known to be one of the murderers. Her life in his hands, he nevertheless sets her free, intuitively sensing her innocence. Four years later and he’s still hunting down the rest of the men involved that day- and Courtney Hart once again has managed to cross his path. However she has no idea the history they have together and though he wants nothing of...more
I remember reading a book by Johanna Lindsey a very long time back. And though I don't actively pursue each and every book that she writes, nevertheless I remember Ms. Lindsey to have the ability to spin a good historical romance with enough passion between the characters to stir up one's insides. A Heart So Wild is a romance that gets recommended quite often on Amazon discussion forums and I finally decided to find out what makes this book of the American-Westeran genre a favorite of so many ro...more
Wow - what a story! This is truly one of those 'old school' romances we all grew up with and love so well! It had alot of action, adventure and was quite gritty in some parts. You don't see that much with all the Regency romances around. Made for a nice change.

The heroine was an innocent at the beginning, though pretty smart and logical, but by book end she was really able to stand on her own two feet and express just how she felt about everything.

The hero was damaged, one of those angst kinda g...more
One of Ms. Lindsey's better reads. I can't really put my finger on why I loved it. I just did. It has the alpha, protective hero and the "helpless" heroine. Not that helpless is good. It's not, really, but she was a city girl out of her element so I forgive her.
I am coming to the realization that I really like JL's western romances. This series (pair of books, really), I read out of order, but it didn't really matter. It was highly satisfying.

The story takes place from Kansas to Texas (which made it even more enjoyable since I live in Texas and pass by Waco all the time). The beginning is tragic as we witness the rape and murder of a peaceful Comanche tribe. My heart was bleeding at this point. When our hero and the other men return to the camp to see...more

If you can get past the first 2 chapters this is an amazing book. There is some seriously tragic events in the beginning but you need to know to understand the characters. I would highly recommend this book and the book that follows.

i love CHANDOS!!! (a.k.a Kane Straton) ^^
This book was an entertaining read, where the plot was simple, but beautifully and effortlessly written. The story tells us about a young girl, who was lost her father, the only person she loved in the entire world, due to very unfortunate circumstances. Alone, lost, and burdened with a stepmom (oh the irony), she takes up a shit job as a hotel maid with pay so low that should she be in this current world, she would have been labelled as unemployed. Four years later, she stumbles across her fath...more

This is the first of two novels about the Stratton family in 19th century Texas. At that time, Texas was a rough place bringing together gunmen, cowboys, ranchers and Indians. Many who had lived through the destruction of the Civil War looked to the West for a better life. Courtney Harte's father, a doctor and a Southerner (who ended up on the North's side), was one of them. Now disillusioned, he decides to move to Texas. On the way there, in Kansas, they are attacked by Comanches seeking vengea...more

Way too bodice-rippery for my taste. Characters were flat. A thoroughly grunting/possessive hero and a ridiculously immature heroine. Can't even give a two-star for courtesy. I stopped reading in earnest at about 60% through and skimmed the rest.

Buku ke 1 seri Straton Family.

Judulnya sangat sesuai dengan karakter Chandos yg liar. Kukira Chandos sedikitnya memiliki darah indian ditubuhnya, tapi ternyata tidak sama sekali. Chandos memiliki nama yg beradab namun tak ingin digunakannya karena suatu alasan. Keadaanlah yg menjadikannya seorang indian Comanche dan keadaan pula yg membuat Chandos menjadi kejam dan penuh dendam pada orang orang yg membuatnya kehilangan dua orang yg ia sayangi. Pertemuan takdirnya dengan Courtney Harte...more

Meh..I typically enjoy Johanna Lindsey's book but this book did not tickle my fancy.
First of the female character is annoying. I hate her attitude and her daftness and her constant complaining.
The male sounds good looking but he seems kinda dead inside.
I did like the story line but for some chick to go out of her way to just leave her home due to a picture in an old newspaper screams stupidddddd.
Ok anyway, The ending makes no sense either. All of a sudden Chandos changes his mind about everythi...more
I wasn't sure at the begining but the book gradually improved and I loved the ending!
Monica Happy Reading All!!
I have wanted to read Johanna Lindsey for a few years now. A Heart So Wild is set in Kansas in 1868. The two main characters are Chandos and Courtney. When the first meet in 1868 it is not a pleasant one. Courtney is traveling with her father and step-mother from the east coast. They have stopped at a farm for the night and that farmer is attached by Indians for his role in the brutal murders and rapes of a Comanche tribe.

Courtney and her step mother Sarah are told to hide in the feed storage s...more
Read the 2nd time 1/23/2010

Chandos and the other warriors return to their peaceful village to find everyone is dead. White men had come raping and killing the woman and children. The men vow vengeance to kill each one of those men, their dead will not rest until they do.
Courtney was with her father and step-mother traveling through Kansas. They had stopped to rest at the home of one of those men when the Indians found him. She was hiding in a bin with her step-mother when the lid was lifted. Her...more

The year 1873, Kansas territory:
Courtney and her Step-Mother were stranded in Kansas 4 years earlier after an Indian attack where her father was presumed dead, his body was never found and the other men were brutally killed for their transactions against the Comanche. In that same attack Courtney’s life was spared by one of the fearsome Comanche warriors. Now four years later Courtney is still in Rockley, Kansas working in the local hotel when a disturbing and compelling man comes throug...more
Courtney Harte has lived a life of drudgery with her harsh stepmother in Kansas ever since her father disappeared after a brutal Indian attack. When she sees his picture in a Texas newspaper, she can hardly contain her excitement and determines to travel to Waco. The trail is fraught with danger and the only man brave enough to take her is a mysterious visitor in town, Chandos - a man with a quick draw and an even quicker temper. Courtney is stung by his cold aloofness...for she has found that e...more
As ashamed as I am to admit this, I stopped reading, really reading, about two years ago. I read for work and I read for school, but I haven't engaged in pleasure reading in so long, I felt like a hypocrite any time I told one of my students to read, and read often. A Heart So Wild came as a recommendation from my fiancée two years ago and I finished it now in 2012. Now that I'm no longer teaching and in between jobs, I'm a reader again. I'm glad this was my first book back into the fold.

Re-read: 4 stars

I have read this book many times over the years. I never used to be a big fan of the western romance but I enjoyed this much more than I used to.

Courtney is still a bit of a sap but I appreciate more now her personality and her inexperience in the west. She recognizes her limitations and doesn't stray into TSTL territory (I used to think she was just inept and annoying and a pushover). I love how she got into Chandos' heart without really knowing she was doing it.

Disisi lain,...more

Huff,,capek euy baca yg satu ini krn kerjanya berantem melulu. Ga pernah bisa akur. Kalo ga suasana hati si Chandos yang jelek, gantian suasana hati si Courtney yang jelek. Pengennya sih di ending cerita si Courtney mengacuhkan Chandos, tetapi Courtney gampang banget memaafkan Chandos. Namanya juga cinta, makanya jd begini deh.

Balas dendam Chandos terhadap kulit putih yang membunuh ibu dan adik tirinya membawa takdirnya bersinggungan dengan si mata kucing yang tidak lain adalah Courtney Harte, an...more

Romance nya oke banget! Ada bonus action ala west west story pula.
Heroine nya paling keliatan berkembang dalam cerita.Dari sosok yang lemah jd kuat.
My fav hero n heroine so far buat genre HR ini...

Alurnya cepat, menarik dan bikin penasaran.Ceritanya juga fresh meski ternyata novel aslinya diterbitin taon 80-an. Yang agak mengganggu sebenarnya bagian endingnya.Chandos yang mati"an gak mau berdamai dgn ayahnya, tiba" saja melunak di selembar terakhr..mungkin jatah halaman pengarangnya udah habis...more

Johanna Helen Howard was born on March 10, 1952 in Germany, where her father, Edwin Dennis Howard, a soldier in the U.S. Army was stationed. The family moved about a great deal when she was young. Her father always dreamed of retiring to Hawaii, and after he passed away in 1964 Johanna and her mother settled there to honor him.
