From BBC Radio 4 - Saturday Drama:
Lieutenant Mario Conde has been suspended for taking a well-deserved pop at a fellow officer. But Major Rangel is short of staff and has to call Conde in for a case involving the disappearance of a Cuban with U.S. citizenship who has come home to visit his family. The final story in the Havana Quartet.

Ipak, prepoznatljivo je da ...more

Leonardo Padura’s Havana Black begins with its protagonist, police detective Mario Conde ‘The Count’, resigning, because he’s fed up with being a cop (he would rather write, even if he is aware that his writing is probably quite mediocre), and because the boss he has worked with all these years has been made to retire. But The Count will not be allowed to leave the stage so easily: he is given three days to solve a recent murder, the killing and brutal castration of a man who had once been a big ...more

My book club selected this work from a Cuban mystery author I'd never heard of, but was glad to get a taste of his writing. The mystery plot kept my attention and I enjoyed learning more about Cuba via the details. I found the sometimes criticism of the government surprising as I didn't think the "authorities" in Cuba would allow that. What was most interesting, however, was the way this book was written scene-by-scene. I've never read a book written this way.

I intend to write a more general review of the crime fiction of Leonardo Padura Fuentes. While I'm no expert on Cuban literature I'm going back and forth between Padura and those fellow crime writes, unlike Padura, such as José Latour, who have turned their back on the revolution in order to get a feel for the fictional dialogue that is in motion.

And it is fascinating -- almost, in its own way, unique. If there is indeed a Havana Noir driven by evil and violence -- where is that coming from? Wha

It's autumn in Havana, hurricane season and the gathering of many threads in the Havana Quartet. A former high-ranking official in charge of the disposition of property left by the bourgeoise after the revolution has returned to Havana and turned up dead and sexually mutilated. The Count, ready to resign from the police force, is pressured into solving this one last case by his new boss, who has the power to grant him his request or to prolong the agony which is caused principally by the ...more

First book by Padura I've read and I liked it very much. If you can, read it in Spanish because he has a beautiful literary style (although sometimes I needed a Cuban-Argentine dictionary!). I will try to read the whole series

This final volume of Padura’s “Havana Quartet” is an excellent Cuban police procedural, providing us with a murder mystery, insights into the exile community in Florida, the life of the masses still on the island, and the machinations of the Party hacks.

Pretty good, engaging detective story. Loved the descriptions of Cuba and I liked the hurricane approaching that hung over the story. I would definitely read more by this guy.
