Gator was flushed down the toilet when his owner's mother realized he would grow to be a large, dangerous animal. He lives in the sewer and eats people's pets when his hunger becomes uncontrollable. (Note the abundance of Missing Dog posters on the telephone pole.)

Gabby is a recycling, vegetarian outcast who is constantly teased and never speaks up to defend herself. When they find each other, it's a match made in...well, a match made in an environmentally-friendly paradise. Mostly.

This is ador...more

Gabby is a young girl who befriends a gator- they are both unliked, Gabby because she is unusual and Gator because he eats dogs. They form a unique friendship that withstands the trials of bullies and animal control alike.

Gabby is a young girl who has no active parents who sets very high goals for herself at home about the environment and how to save it. Unrealistic character? Check. A gator who eats innocent dogs and is constantly chasing other animals to eat? Check. Negative reinforced stereot...more

Simple, bright colorful artwork with large lettering makes this a great graphic novel for the 2nd-4th grade set who like the graphic novel format. Kids who aren't into graphic novels will like this book too as there are no more than four frames on a page and it's easy to follow. The story is funny and light with some laugh out loud moments.

A little boy orders a gator by mail. When the gator wreaks havoc on the boy's house, the mother makes him flush it down the toilet. Fast forward ten years and...more

Totally stealing Jackie the Librarian's review format...

Things I liked:
- Huge panels
- Minimal text (although vocab isn't particularly simple)
- Latchkey kid depiction
- Unique characterization of Gabby
- Quirky aspects of Gator - computer, sorta dangerous
- Tuba dancing

Things I didn't like:
- Stereotypical characters - football player, cheerleaders
- Depiction of animal control

So, I guess the Likes win. This is going on my E Graphic Novels list in case my library system ever creates an Easy Graphic...more

ALL RIGHT! Unexpected events drive the plot of this classic mismatched-friends story. Think an interspecies Lethal Weapon, but with more laughs, fewer criminals, and no sex. In fact, don't think of Lethal Weapon at all. No. Don't. Think about if the kid on the tricycle in The Incredibles befriended a voracious alligator and then had to bust the alligator out of the pokey and reform the alligator's pet-eating ways, meanwhile being defended - by the alligator - against Biff, the jocky a-hole from...more

I loved this graphic novel! Very cute, special book with fantastic messages about friendship, misunderstanding others, judging before you know, and standing up for yourself. Gabby is an endearing character for me just by the posters in her room like Recycle OR DIE and Go Vegetarian! I loved that the alligator had a computer journal and has to resolve his eating thing... I want to read the sequel-- which I dream is in the works even though it was published in 2010...

Grades K-4. This was a really fun read about a gator who is afraid of water (ever since he was flushed down the toilet as a young gator). Gabby is a young girl who is picked on by her peers and called a "freak." The two meet while a bully is tormenting Gabby and Gator is in the park looking for another puppy to eat. The illustrations are hilarious and my son and I laughed as we read it and had to go back and immediately re-read it. Highly recommended!

It's a comic book/picture book about a young girl (Gabby) who doesn't have any friends and who meets Gator (an Alligator who is believed by the community to be a monster). The thing is...

Gabby's a vegetarian and spends the whole book trying to convince Gator to eat veggies and non-meat alternatives. But anyone as into recycling, conservation, and the environment as Gabby is should know that carnivores do not have bodies that can PROCESS non-meat foods.

Of course there's also the demonizing of fo...more

I loved the humor and the depth that is conveyed with so few words, but wonderful art work. This book deals with finding a true friend and fending off bullies. My one concern is that the kids who will be most drawn to this might not be in the place to understand the stereotypical football player bully with the gaggle of idolizing cheerleaders.

OH EMM GEE SO ADORABLE.

This is a fluffy kitty of a book - Gabby is a girl that's clearly different from her peers, and they unfortunately don't let her forget it. She's got a lot of ideas for the world and no real outlet for it.

Then there's Gator. He's an alligator. He likes to eat, and he's a little misunderstood since the only food he can find happens to be the neighborhood pets.

Gabby and Gator meet each other, bond over their situations, and such begins an absolutely cute adventure that has a...more

I absolutely LOVED this book! I read it to my 2nd graders and they loved it, too! Pictures are great, but I love the message this book talks about: standing up for yourself and your friends. Gabby and Gator are a unique pair, but they go together so well! I would love to see other books about other adventures they go on.

Quirky graphic novel for young readers that = great fun. Gabby is a vegetarian, eco-conscious girl who has a hard time making friends. she is continually teased, ridiculed, and often called a "freak." Can and more importantly SHOULD she befriend a ravenous gator that is depleting the local pet population??
Jaidab
What's not to like about a vegetarian main character and her good friend--and alligator. This book was unique and quirky. My 3 1/2 year old and 2 year old were cracking up when the animal control guy got hit in the face with trash. Why that was so funny to them, I may never know.
Christiane
Gabby is a lonely girl who has trouble making friends and Gator is stuck living in the sewers until one wonderful day they meet. I love the illustrations, especially the very expressive Gator who looks super cute even when gobbling up a pet poodle.
Sandy
Super cute! This graphic novel is thick, but the illustrations (which are quite whimsically awesome, BTW) are big and bold and the pages will turn quickly. Will appeal to a fairly wide audience, I think.

Super Cute. Super Fun. Super Delightful!

Amazing pacing & expression work by James Burks! The art & action move so quickly, it's like watching a cartoon on TV!

Super Recommended!

Probably gonna buy this one. Lovely story about oddballs who find each other. Not sure at all about how to share it with second graders but I'll figure it out.
Amy Pfeiffer
This was the first graphic novel I've ever read, and what a great one to start with!! It's all about being accepted for who you are. I think it's really well done.
Jan
A rollicking and hysterical adventure starring an alligator with difficulties controlling his appetite and a little girl who befriends him.
Sandy
A clever twist on the "misfits find each other" theme, with innovative graphic format and loads of character appeal.
Betsy
Now I know why this book gets checked out non-stop. It appeals to both girls and boys. Looking for Gabby & Gator II!
Kathryn
The most touching story about friendship, and seeing past eachother's differences to find a true bff.
Lynda
Mar 02, 2012 Lynda rated it 4 of 5 stars Recommends it for: children, children who don't feel accepted
This is a very cute story about a girl who makes friends with a gator. It is a story about acceptance, and being yourself. A good story for children.
Christina
Caitlyn loved this. She read ahead and when I got to the end while reading it to her later, she had to spoil the ending so I wouldn't be worried about the main (human) character!
Ellie
Hilarious and adorable all wrapped into one charmingly illustrated graphic novel!
Jennifer
Super cute story of 2 misfit friends, one happens to be a gator. Good for 2-5th grades.
