As one of the kick off books to the Pivotal Moments in World History series which seeks to understand the major paradigm shifts that changed the course of world history this book earns its place. The book provides a good overview of the Revolutionary Era in Latin America and is reliable base for investigating the various struggles for independence in further detail. However, Chasteen could have better organized the book to make it more comprehensible, but overall he gave a good treatment of a very complex topic that has on-going implications.
