This distinctive biography is written by Diego Rivera’s daughter, Gaudalupe Marin Rivera, in both Spanish and English. It is illustrated with reproductions of big and bold artwork that mimics her father’s larger-than-life personality. It’s hard to turn back once you open this striking picture book and are confronted with endpapers that feature Rivera’s most famous and riveting mural, "Dream of a Sunday Afternoon in Alameda Park." It shows Diego Rivera as a boy, Frida Kahlo as a grown-u...more

Part family memoir, part artistic retrospective, this picture-book from Guadalupe Rivera Marin does give some background information about the life of her famous father, the celebrated Mexican painter Diego Rivera, but it focuses more on his artwork, and on giving the stories behind some of his well-known paintings. From Picos con Naranja, in which the author herself is depicted (with orange) as a young girl, to La familia, in which an impoverished family, taken in and aided by Diego Rivera, is ...more
This is a creative way to present information about Diego Rivera and the inspirations behind his artwork. Written in both English and Spanish, this picture book is written by Guadalupe Rivera Marin, with her father's paintings as the images. Next to each painting is narrative by Marin, refecting over her realtionship with her father, his inspirations as an artist, and stories about her culture. Language is used in an authentic manner, and culture is represented in an authentic way as well.

Age: 2nd - 5th grade
Media: oil on canvas
Illustrator Style: Blend of traditional Mexican folk art, cubism, and expressionism
Diego Rivera’s daughter recounts special memories behind thirteen paintings of Rivera’s. Guadalupe explores Mexican traditions, rural life, and family life—including her father’s interactions with her as the subject of his paintings. Both in Spanish and English this is a great introduction to another language (both for the reader and the listener).

A beautiful book that serves as a wonderful introduction for children to the are of Diego Rivera. From reading this book, children can picture him as a child himself, and then as a loving father to his little girl. A great way to make an intimidating world-renowned author into a real person. The inclusion of the Spanish text is a real plus as well.
I really enjoyed this book. It is written by his daughter and she describes who some of the people are in her father's pictures and the circumstance under which they were painted. This would be great for our art teacher to use. I really liked it because we have 2 of his prints in our house. It was fascinating to know the story behind them!
Written by Diego's daughter, Guadalupe Rivera Marin. Each page is in English and Spanish and includes a painting by Diego Rivera. I love this format (Spanish, English, using the artist's work as illustrations) and that is why I gave it a 5. The artist's paintings give an authentic insight into his life. I would use this for all ages. The format is good for those learning either English or Spanish. This book is more of a memoir than a biography. It also focuses on the culture of Mexico and...more
Simple little bio about Diego Rivera and his daughter Guadalupe. She tells the story behind some of his paintings.
