reviews

Some may think it positively strange that I am writing a review for a story book. After all, I read children's and grade school literature sometimes, and do not review them most of the time. I honestly almost did not review this, as I felt quite silly doing so. In fact, I almost deleted it several times as I felt so ridiculous penning a review such as this, or any, on a tiny story book. What made me decide to write a review anyway is the content of the book, the beauty of it's pictures and prose

This is a poem written by Bilbo as he heads off with the elves into the Undying Lands, saying farewell forever to Middle Earth. The artwork is amazing! Done by Tolkein's favorite artist and the same person who did C.S. Lewis' Narnia books, the small images (generally on the left hand page) refer back to Bilbo's first voyage (i.e., getting that pesky One Ring) whereas the large images (those on the right hand page) depict the passage out of our world and into the next. It makes a nice addition

Very short lyrical book, beautifully illustrated with fairy-tale style illustrations. Not sure what age of kiddo this is intended for, but I wonder if the little ones will understand the language -- it includes lots of words like moorings, ere, utmost, harbour-bar, havens, blest, etc. It also has an awful lot of footnotes for such a short book! Still, if you just want to introduce your child to Tolkien, this is probably a good way to start.

A beautiful book in every way: verses and illustrations, and most of all, a deeply hidden sorrow and hope beneath the poetic words

By itself, the poem would merit three stars, but the illustrations are of such a superb quality, I had to bump up the rating. There's a great juxtaposition of scenes from Bilbo's original quest to the Lonely Mountain and his time in Rivendell - plus he looks so darn adorable.

So I am biased. This was one of my first picture books and was honestly the one which started my Tolkien journey. That and Mr. Bliss. I picked up the book again at 13, two-three years after I gave up on the second chapter of the Fellowship and only then appreciated the song in his lines. That inspired me to give another shot at Lord of the Rings. After one or two false starts I became the Tolkien fanatic I am today.

A very sweet farewell to Middle-Earth, this poem, written from Bilbo's perspective, is worth reading. The illustrations by Pauline Bayne, which also reflect on Bilbo's adventures in The Hobbit, add to the atmosphere of the very brief work.

Beautiful, brief poetry and picture book (oil paintings). The artwork is what makes the book special. Great to introduce grade-schoolers to a taste of "The Hobbit" adventure.

a great way to get kids gently tossed into tolkien's world, sans reading them the hobbit (although my dad did that and i turned out ok ;p)

I liked it because it's J.R.R. Tolkiens smallest book, and tells how Bilbo leaves to see the elves
