The second story about Rose, an orphan become housemaid become magician's apprentice. This time around Rose is struggling with her feet sitting on both the world of servants and her new potential as magician - something not assisted by a rise of anti-magic distrust as a result of the events of the last novel.

Again this is a fairly simple story - the plot twists are highly obvious and the anti-magic feeling a little contrived (if your economy depends on alchemical gold, you really really should b...more

I thought that the other servants treatment - and fear - of Rose was really well done. i.e., by the end of it I was completely infuriated and frustrated for her. And the King! I know the King had his own family AND country to think of, but I sort of hate how he treated/took Rose for granted - and his supposed wizard money-maker. The magicians should rebel. >:(

Anyways, it was a great story. :3 I adore Rose more and more. And Bill. (Still waiting for that book with her and Bill and Freddie in t...more

This book is a stronger follow-up to its predecessor "Rose". Rose is a delightful character, and she has rather charming adventures and most amusing and appealing interactions with her friends. Alas, thanks to the events of the previous novel, those with magic are now viewed as a threat, and watched with mistrust. Especially when one of the princesses, a figurehead for the entire country, vanishes. It is up to Rose to hunt down and expose the wrongdoers.

4 stars.

This book is intriguing, as is the first, and a good read.
A problem with the first book was that there were a few chapters or so that contained things that were scary and gory, and that means you should really check those scenes before giving it to a younger person. This problem is ore minor, I believe, than before. From what I remember, the second wasn't that bad in that department, but you should still check as I can't remember too well.

I thought this book was delightful and adventurous. I liked the part of the princess being smart and not stuck up like her moother, and I liked the characters of Gossamer and Lord Venn, as they set some of the characters for the next book. The finding of the princess was quite imaginative so I also liked that. It was an enchanting adventure to read and it is 1 of my favourite books.

Same as the first book - a little long winded but good.

Loved it.

At first I thought that this book wasn't as good as the first as Rose came across as quite stupid at times but I much preferred the ending, so it was bumped back up a star :) While these books (so far) aren't the best EVER, there's something remarkably charming about them ^^

Just as charming as the first book in the series. It's childrens literature of the best kind in that it can just as easily be enjoyed as an adult. I missed some of the character building from the first book, as this was much more about the action. But I loved Gus and Princess Charlotte.

A perfect book to end off a read-a-thon with.
