Serial killer police procedural. OK, but nothing special or different. One instance of heroine stupidity. No romance.
GENRE CONFUSION:
The author’s bio talks about awards for romantic suspense and contemporary romance. So that’s what I thought I was getting when I bought the book Cold Truth. Unfortunately Cold Truth has NO ROMANCE. Now as I look at the author’s website, I don’t find any clear distinction about which of her books are romances. So I’m frustrated. Anyway I g...more

Cold Truth, by Mariah Stewart, b-plus.
Produced by Blackstone, downloaded from audible.com.
This was a good read. There were minor irritations in that there were slight inconsistencies at times. For example, Cass would get a glass of water, sit at the table, and then be drinking beer. That kind of misstep. But, aside from that, the book moved quickly and kept my interest.

This is the first of the series and I plan on reading more (next one being Hard Truth).
The writing style is easy to read. There are a few mistakes that I found humorous (e.g., He started the car, but did not put it in gear as they talked. <next page> He started the car and backed out . . .) and sometimes there were jumps that you filled in the obvious (e.g., person one: I have a photo of the bad guy. person two: I have a name. Let's go get him--shouldn't they make sure the two ...more

A serial killer seems to be back after a long absence from a small tourist town. The investigating detective Cassie Burke lost her mother, father, and sister when she was very young to a killer who was caught and who died later in prison. However, some of the current killings are reminiscent of parts of her family’s murder. In the present day, Cassie’s visiting best friend/cousin is attacked by the serial killer, but the killer is interrupted when Cassie comes home early. Cassie is a good po...more

I do really like this author and this series I just need to start reading them in order!! She tends to set up the mystery too much for me so that I have it figured out before the characters do and then of course I am yelling at the characters in my car telling them what to do!!(Yes, I listened to it on CD) Maybe I am just getting too good at these mystery books! The bonus in this book is we get to meet Regan Landry and Mitch Peyton and see how that all began!!
New author I found on Amazon. This is the story of a female cop who’s family was murdered when she was six. At the same time, the “Bayside Strangler” started a serial rampage in her town. It’s kind of unbelievable that the two weren’t put together but this book was an easy read. There’s a big dose of romance in the book too – sort of the romance for mystery readers. I’ll read the next in the series… it’s a trilogy.
Meh... the mystery aspect wasn't too bad but I found the characters were either largely undeveloped or I just didn't care about them enough to get really involved with the story. The overall plot was tedious and brought nothing new or exciting to the genre. You've got your typical FBI agent, the same profiler that says that spits out the same profile as every other serial killer out there, the same local cop with a haunted past blah, blah, blah...Like I said Meh...
The mystery itself was intriguing. I found the characters disappointing, though. Stilted language created wooden conversations that did nothing to make the characters more meaningful. It was good as a quick mystery to help me procrastinate from more important things I need to be doing, but I'll be tossing it into my paperbackswap.com pile instead of keeping it to read again.
Enjoyed this book; didn't read it for a long time because it was tagged as a romance. Someone has a very different idea of romance....I did not find it romantic, but suspenseful and tense. A thriller/mystery.
I really enjoyed this. As I've said before, the characters are very likable people, and despite procedural errors and some implausible circumstances -- I think I would call them American cozies. =;)
Another great suspense novel by Mariah Stewart. I enjoyed it very much and it kept me guessing until the killer was finally revealed. My only complaint is that a little romance would go along way. I don't understand how this can be classified as a romantic suspense - there really isn't any.

rated it
Dithering between 3 and 4 stars. Settling for 3 (3.75) because I couldn't really 'connect' with the characters. Excellent story, though.
currently listening to... no garbage so far and the murder/mystery seems interesting so i'll keep listening...
This was good! A new author that doesn't have garbage and keeps my interest!

Very good, I like the way the murders over 26 years were connected. Look forward to reading the next book in the series.
Goosebumps! Mariah Stewart's trilogies are amazing either reading individually or all together. Great read.
ok. predictable superficial.
Really enjoy this series.
Detective Cassie Burke investigates a murder in Bowers Inlet, as small NJ shore town. It soon becomes clear that a serial murderer is on the loose and all indications are that the Bayside Strangler has returned after 20 years. A good forensic mystery.
This was my first Mariah Stewart book. It started out really slow for me. I put it down and did not pick it up for several months. Once I picked it back up I could not put it down. I really liked it.
This is a good series, each book has a great twist. Careful though, they are all murder mysteries, but they all also have mushy romance in them so don't read if that puts you off.
The author had the main character's "back up" be a FBI agent so I was hooked into reading it from the cover. It was a good suspense novel that kept me wanting to read more.
If you like Mary Higgins Clark you will like any books by Mariah Stewart. Her books are quick reads. Great beach reads!
Ok mystery book where everyone is pretty and gets the fella in the end
I really like all of this series.
Good setting and characters
great!!!!
