Every day, 2,600 Americans die of cardiovascular disease -- and despite remarkable interventional and surgical procedures, over 650,000 new heart attacks occur annually. In The Heart Speaks, Dr. Mimi Guarneri reveals groundbreaking new research that the heart is a multilayered, complex organ, possessing intelligence, memory, and decision-making abilities independent from the mind -- and that healing the heart can have more to do with healing the mind and s...more

This was a fascinating look at the causes of heart disease that go beyond diet and exercise. The author of this memoir is a doctor who also treats the mental, emotional, and spiritual aspects of the heart in her practice--which are all important components that can physically manifest as disease when something is out of whack. She really encourages behavior that reduces stress in your everyday life and encourages positive thinking and thankfulness…things that not only make you a nicer person t...more

This is the first book I read completely on my Kindle. One of the nice features of a Kindle is that you can select and highlight passages and then re-read those passages in one fell swoop. This was a book made for highlighting!

Dr. Guarnari is a cardiologist. She was accustomed to saving lives via the most advanced practices of western medicine. She began to learn from her own experiences and from her patients that there was another way to look at the health of the heart.

A well written book by the doctor who founded the Scripps Center for Integrated Medicine. She writes of a more holistic and humanistic approach to preventing and managing cardiovascular disease. A lot of the information is not new to me, but further validates what I have learned about the effect our emotions and lifestyle can have on our hearts. It is an easy read, and the stories of individual patients are compelling. There is a good list of additional reading at the end.

This is a wonderful book written by a Cardiologist who shares an open mind and heart with her patients. Her practices renewed my hope in today's money driven world of medical science. Dr. Guarneri's practice incorporates an array of healing techniques that are not only by the book, but also, by the heart.

Sounds like a romance novel, but no. It's about a cardiologist who through a series of events comes to believe that the heart is more than just an organ that pumps blood through the body.

I started thinking about this when I was reading my scriptures and wondering why there were so many references to the heart "doing" things, I started to look at the references to the heart and I thought it was odd, there aren't references to any other organs in the body.

This is a really important book that I wish all people with hearts and especially all doctors would read. Guarneri a top cardiologist who has come to understand and verify the role of emotion, guilt, stress, love, etc. in heart health. Very readable, well-documented and thought provoking.

I have always had issues with the medical field but this book gave me hope that there are still great doctors our there. Dr. Guarneri is definitely a unique cardiologist who I've grown to respect is and is a friend of a friend. I am grateful I had this book lent to me.

I give it five stars.
It's awakening something inside us.
Speaks about human as a spiritual being.
I dont think I can give a proper review, I want to make it really represents the original taste that I get from this book.

Message of the book: doctors need to do a better job of listening to their patients and alternative medicine should be considered in conjunction with conventional medical treatments.

I enjoyed this book, especially as heart disease runs in my family. A very different perspective on the heart from the perspective of a cardiologist who practices wholestic medicine

I love that a cardiologist who once viewed esoteric beliefs about the mind-body-spirit connection as hippy-dippy did a 180 and wrote this interesting book about just this. Although this book is full of insights and Guarneri's honest journey into a paradigm shift about the human heart, it's written in the kind of prose one may expect from a doctor. At times I found it dry or the narrative a little formulaic but I appreciate Guarneri stepping out of her comfort zone on so many levels to open other...more

This book was interesting to a point, and then it dragged. I think it needed more examples.

A subject close to my heart (no pun intended)--but also applies to all of our sense of well being.

I loved the combination of scientific explanation and with holistic perspective that developed as you progress through this book. What happens to our bodies when our hearts are unhealthy is increasingly becoming common knowledge, but the picture of how our emotional and relationship lifestyles impact our heart health is eye-opening. The author began as a facts-only must-be-able-to-quantify-it doctor and through keen observation and listening to her patients, began treating patients more holistic...more

This small book shows the connection of man's heart to his soul. Written by a successful cardiologist, this book should serve as a companion piece to much of Parker Palmer's material on "broken-heartedness." More importantly, it shows how the modern professional can make room for integrity and compassion.

Very interesting and informative read by a doc about the healing process and the various things that impact it.

It will also make you stop eating french fries for a week--they have a bad effect on your heart.

A cardiologist tells how her view of her healing work grew to include more than the technical proficiency required to diagnose and fix cardiac problems. Many interesting anecdotes about the mind-body connection.

Informative. Don't know how relevant it is to my life, but it might be an omen that someday, someone will have heart trouble in the family.
