Animal-Speak: The Spiritual and Magical Powers of Creatures Great and Small
The animal world has much to teach us. Some animals are experts at survival and adaptation, some never get cancer, some embody strength and courage while others exude playfulness. Animals remind us of the potential we can unfold, but before we can learn from them, we must must first be able to speak with them.

A superb expose’ on symbolism intrinsic to the wonders of nature, ‘Animal-Speak’ by author Ted Andrews sources flowers, plants, trees and, most naturally, all creatures great & small. And so it happened that the co-owner of a thriving quartz mine invited me to attend a weekly gathering called The Circle of Light.
Once assembled, the facilitator said she was going to do something different. “Tonight,” she smiled, “we’re going to find our Spirit Animal.”

Ted Andrews is a well known author and speaker of North American Spiritual Tradition. Animal-Speak along with Animal-Wise work together to catalog the wisdom of the Animal Kingdom. We all have what is called Animal-Totems that assists us in our Life. These two volumes can help us to understand and to be able to work with our Totem. It is the best source I have found that catalogs so many different animals. The two volumes works together - Animal-Speak has a general topic such as 'Spiders'; where...more
I read this book once years ago when I first began exploring my spirituality and again recently, along with its companion book, The Animal Speak Workbook. This is a good book for anyone wishing to connect with nature, on just about any level. Along with the information about animals, this includes all kinds of signs from the natural world. For those interested in animal archetypes, Andrews not only tells you about the characteristics of the different animals, he also teaches you to interpret beh...more
Part of understanding the Self is about connecting with other beings. Learn about how animals represent aspects of ourselves in powerful ways that will give you more intuitive guidance into who you are and the symbolic meaning of events in your life. Animal-Speak is a wonderful reference book and very fun and easy to read. As an artist I often use animals as symbols in my paintings and over the years, Animal-Speak have been a constant source of wisdom about the archetypal symbolism represented b...more
This is THE essential book for anyone working with animal spirit guides. Andrews covers just about every animal, bird and insect one could think of. He provides clear and lucid explanations of the characteristics of each animal guide and what one might gain by working with each animal. I plan to keep it as a reference, and I've already referred to it often. It's especially useful when I repeatedly encounter a specific animal in my daily travels, such as the hawk who took up residence in my back...more

The introduction and first couple chapters give a thorough explanation of "power animals" and how to work with the symbols/archetypes in our lives. Ted Andrews obviously has a profound knowledge of the esoteric and presents the spiritual or magical powers of animals in an easy-to-read format.

Animal Speak is akin to attending a 101 class, more so if one is already familiar with its subject matter. It's easy reading and the language is simplistic, but Llewyllen publishing tends to be more interested in quantity not quality. Regardless, I’m content to have it on the shelf as a reference.

If I was stranded on an island this would be one of the books that I would want with me. It explains the Native American tradition of animal totems. I like that Mr. Andrews includes different tribes' definition of each animal and lets the reader decide what resonated with them. I use this book more than any other in my collection. When I have an animal encounter, I use Animal Speak as a reference to explain the possible meaning in my life. I love, love, love this book.
One of my all-time favorite resources when writing about the myth and lore of animals, especially for my fantasy novels. I love the Native American philosophy that Andrews brings to his animal studies, and I appreciate his commitment to Raptor Rehabilitation. "Animal Speak" includes habitat information and a variety of suggested activities that allow readers to get "closer" to nature and their "animal messengers."
This is one for the reference shelf! I use it again and again, and as soon as you begin paying attention....... the Universe responds! Use it as a guide, to help you create your own language with the creatures of the world......... to create meanings for certain movements and behaviors....... these movements can be a guide, if you communicate with the Universe that is your wish......
Magnificent!!! I Highly Recommend!!! There is definitely a connection between humans and the animal/insect/aviary kingdoms. Sometime just stop and let go of all expectations and thoughts and simply "feel" the passing energies between the animal and yourself. The correspondences in Ted's book shows you what each one symbolizes to you and your life.
This interesting reference book is for you if you think you can learn something from nature by symbolism and totems of animals of all kinds. It shows what the presence of animals in our lives can tell us about aspects of ourselves or give us guidance into who we are and the symbolic meaning of events in our lives our life. Really neat if you ask me.
Ted Andrews has a number of incredible books. Animal Speak was the first one I was introduced to and learned a great deal from it about the magick and energy of animals and how it can work for us and through us. A definite must-read for anyone who has ever been interested in, or worked with, animal totems, familiars or spirit guides.
The best Animal Totem book out there in my opinion. Totems are explained in detail and very clearly so even someone unfamiliar with the concept would understand. Each common animal is outlined and its attributes in connection with your personality is defined. There is a section on mammals, birds, reptiles and even insects.
A must have for anyone attuned to animals or the natural world, or those who are attuned to the synchronicites of daily life.
If you have an interest in totem animals, this is also the perfect book.
Andrews is precise, and informative, and does so in a grounded way.
This is a great reference to keep and return to.

This book is a little on the wild side. I may give it a better review if I find anything I read to have relevance down the road. Put aside the mystical side of everything, there may be psychological relevance to forming a bond with your animal totem. Who knows. It's interesting, but I can't say it's a best seller.

This is a cool little symbol referrence. There are not very many pictures, and often books on symbols have variations in the meaning of a given symbol. This book does have a few variations, though.
